Why do stucco walls crack? why stucco cracks?
Howdy guys and gals, my daughter Madeleine Giordano videoed me as I explain some of the reasons why this new stucco home has cracked in such a short time.
This type of cracking happens every once in a while.
Please note the roll of tape in my hand is for covering windows. The tape I used to cover the wall on the previously day is called fiber mesh tape mainly used for sheet rock or for the purpose shown in this video. By the way if home owners wanted to just paint this home I could have just used caulking.
To repair cracks takes more time in than most folks realize. For example, in the early morning they are the largest and in the hot sun they are almost invisible.

Why do stucco walls crack? why stucco cracks?
@TheSkydiverphoenix Hey skydiver, that’s a very easy question, but after watching the video, I had the same question.
I used the typical fiber mesh tape that is used mainly for sheetrock, but as I am explaining what we are doing I am holding a roll of red vinyl tape because it’s the next day and I am covering windows. Oops. I would never had noticed that unless someone brought it up.
Have a great day!

A tree branch fell a knock a nice size piece of stucco off. I live in michigan so it is to cold to stucco. What can I put over the hole to keep water and snow out?
Hey dude, if the house is painted you would have to day the area than plastic and tape. Duct or vinyl should stick if it’s not too cold. If it’s cold and wet there, you could use a sheet of plywood temporally, stand it upwards at an angle against the house if the hole is low.
Best wishes, and have a good evening,

With hardcoat stucco homes, what I do is cover all the walls with synthetic fiberglass mesh and then color coat with acrylic finish. Hands down that permanently hides all the cracks and allows movement because of the fiberglass mesh.
Hi caddidon, I agee, to fiber mesh a home would be the safest bet for a home not to crack, convincing our clients to shell out say $10,000 to $15,000 thousand dollars to imbed fiber mesh tape with poly bond is the real question.
After more than 30 years I have not met a single person who would pay the additional cost.
Best wishes and thanks for the tip.

Yeah true, most of the homes I do are old, so the update whether it be painting or fixing has to be done, so they upgrade and do the job with the fiber mesh and finish coat. Not always, but most of the time.
Hi Caddidon, I did have one case where I recommended fiber mesh to a complete home. The homeowner did a farrow system to their home, similar to sandblasting. This house was so beat up afterwards with deep cracks that the only way to fix it properly was to apply a poly bond type of cementitious bonding material first then a mesh and a coat of poly bond over the mesh prior to a color finish, but coat kept them from this system.
Best wishes,

@StuccoPlastering Thanks Kirk.
