How to stucco a patch without breakout.
Do’s & don’ts and other stucco tips.
Howdy guys and DIY gals also show stucco that has not been properly broken out to the studs in this video. Can you repair stucco walls with a saw cut smooth edge? You’re not supposed to!
But have I done similar stucco ties in the past 30 years? Yes.
I tell folks we can’t guarantee any existing stucco wall unless the entire wall is removed of stucco; however, 9 out of 10 times, folks do not remove the whole stucco from a wall.
This means stucco and plastering contractors and homeowners and general contractors have to do the best they can with what they have to work with.

I want a Kirk Giordano Plastering cap!
Hey defender, there no glory in one of those hats. Usually it means the wearer will have a real good night’s sleep, because if he's wearing it that means he working with me, and from what I here it's a nasty, dirty and sometime hard job, but someone’s got to do it, and I happen to enjoy this stucco stuff.
Thanks for the comment and Have a groovy day!

I was waiting to see the weep screed you mentioned… but it wasn't there. Otherwise good info.
Good morning SunGypsy, opps.
The screed was about a foot under this deck, and man what a hassle it was to fasten it.
I do have many screed videos, what type of video about screed are you interested in?
General building codes, below grade, radius, above roofs or cement walkways, etc.
Thanks for watching and have a good day!
Kirk Giordano Plastering
Thanks Kirk. What would you recommend for a slab construction with a two inch foam insulation sticking out beyond the wall above. It seems the weep screed wouldn't work because it doesn't stick out far enough. We are thinking of putting a z channel with out holes to separate our hard coat stucco from the 2" foam sticking out from the footer. Our contractor was going to use Casing bead But from what we have read that is bad due to it would hold moisture up in the wall. Your opinion?
Hey Kirk,
I appreciate all your videos and knowledge. Thanks for posting on YouTube… I am purchasing my first house which is block and stucco and was built in 1935. My father in law and I are going to replace the lintels because we see the buckling in the stucco above the windows. Hopefully after watching all your videos the patch work will be a little easier, wish us luck! Thanks, from NJ
Good evening Lance Patrick in NJ, best wishes with that block home, I have many videos of almost any fix you might find necessary on a block home. If you can’t locate the video, e-mail me and I will find it and if we don’t have the answer well make a video to explain the solution.
Thank you for watching a have a good evening!

Kirk great video, loved the tips and tricks you've acquired over the years. Can you make a video where we can check out the actual technique of you applying the finish coat and how to get that matching texture? Thanks bud.
Hello tydog29, thank you, I have a few here to view below, It even takes me awhile to find what I'm looking for,

Hello Kirk, nice video, thanks for frankly acknowledging attributes/shortcomings of the materials. You tell the truth. – Kent
PS: Sounds like a nice job with all the song birds merrily chirping away in the background. You're a lucky man.
Evening Kent Schneeveis, I remember this job it was in San Jose and about 100 degree's. Man, I love the hot weather, yes, sometimes the mud is stiff and sometimes in runny like soup, it happens to us all.
Depending on what coat it is, I have had to remix to get it proper more than a few times.
Thanks for the comment and have a groovy evening.

What does a repair like this usually cost?
Hi crucibull, depends on who you hire, from $600 to $1200 dollars.
Cost also involves the amount of trips a job like this will take. Sorry I can't be more specific, but other things like location and access really determine the cost.
Best wishes,
Kirk and family
I totally understand. Thats aroud what i thought it'd be. Im a small contractor myself and understand the variables in cost. Thanks for the reply Kirk,I really appreciate your videos
No worries Crucibull, weekly I get asked what I charge per square foot or yard, I always tell folks I need to see the project as this determines the cost, it has very, very little to do with how many or few feet or yards there are on a job.
Best wishes,
Kirk and family
Good work as always, any tips on speeding up braking in a new trowel? As I don't use one often.
Hey matthew I recommend that you just use it, this is the best method. To use a tip or toe of an existing trowel and lightly tap where the rivets holds the steel blade and the cast iron rod takes practice, so much in fact I doubt most people can even understand the concept, But here goes, tap the cast iron once at the top end and the bottom end to give the trowel a bow that won't trowel lines.
Best wishes and good luck as you may do more damage than good below is a link.

Hi kirk, why do you take the gear from rhe back of your hawk. In the uk we take if from the front. That gear looks a though it's not nice to work with. Is their a plasticiser in it. Love watching your videos by the way. Doubt I will ever get to work on weather like you get over in the states. You love that pool trowel lol. Over here people that can't coat tend to use them.
Evening Ryan thank for the bone,
I do like my pool trowel, started using it more than 20 years ago for coved interior ceilings and learned to use it for everything.
I take the mud from the back as it's faster for me. I pull it from the top when i am doing certain stucco finishes such as adobe and such as if I pull from the back the texture won't match.
I tell my guys however you pull your mud or whatever you trowel, just get her done!
Best wishes,
Kirk and family
Thanks for the reply. keep the videos coming, your a good spread, which in this day and age is very hard to come by. In scotland we have rain most of the time so we lose alot of walls due to that. All the best rp plastering and rendering.
Howdy RP plastering and rendering, last week we packed up also as we got soaked by the rain too. Jason and I just packed up and applied a scratch on the work. The next time weather permits i'll handle whatever stucco we may have lost.
Give me 85 degree weather all the time.
Cheers!

Im doing this shit tomorrow for the 1st time it looks easy ably fuckup-able and im a bull in a china shop lol
Hi mexiluvsw, I feel whether you're that bull in a china shop or a meticulous like a tightrope walker.
You need to understand how to properly mix the material first,
the you can apply it as best as possible.
Mixing is half the battle!
I can't spread soupy mud nor can I spread stiff stuff for too long as I burn out quick, so mix is important.
My son Jason has many video's on mixing stucco in buckets.
If you run into trouble call me on my cell at 510 207-0251, I'll walk you through it and make a plasterer out of you yet.
Best wishes,

Hey Kirk thanks for all your videos on stucco. You explain how to do the whole project so simply. Anyone can understand how to stucco. You are awesome! Thanks
Hi Julie Hutchason, thank you, for that statement you are my newest, bestest friend.
Thanks for watching and have a great weekend.

If you were worried about the rigidity between the stud, why not use something like 14 ga strapping behind the lathe?
I know you wouldn't want to cut back the Tyvek per se and put in a board…
I'm enjoying your videos though. I'm one of those engineers you spoke of earlier. (Mechanical Engineer) But I do all of my own work. I grew up remodeling with my dad and I do everything from landscaping, welding, framing, fine woodworking, electrical, etc.
I'm moving some exterior lights that were installed off center on either side of the garage so I'm going to patch the stucco and reposition the lights. First time working any stucco… Good thing it's a small job. 🙂
Hi mfgman2011, the mesh did the trick plus I have it in abundance in my garage,
I have not used a 14 gauge wire before either.
I prefer 17 gauge as It's tried and tested.

I've watched a few of your vids now noticing the wide range of mud work you do. Do you or have you ever floated shower walls for tile? I am a tile contractor but hate doing mud work as it is messy. Another thing is all floating I do requires walls to be level when I am done. I do a lot of shower remodels now so I'm getting better with every new job but after watching your troweling techniques I am impressed and just was wondering if you do any of this type of mud work and if so can you make a vid!
Morning Johnny Mueller, thank you.
I have applied cement plaster to about 20 bathroom shower walls.
We first apply a waterproof peel and stick membrane such as Vycor, then attach the mesh wire, after which we plaster as usual, I hard rubber these walls as they have to be true and plumb otherwise the tile won't set properly.
Cheers,
Kirk and Jason's DIY plastering tips
When you say "true and plumb" do you mean level horizontally? I use redwood float strips to float my walls to which I embed and level off and use a wood float to finish. I also have never used Vycor. I always make sure my paper overlaps the tub or hot mop instead. If another one ever comes up again for ya maybe you can make a vid. I've watched a couple of your vids where you plastered over hardibacker that were interesting but I prefer not to use that crap! Your vids are cool and I can tell you know your shit! Thanks for any feedback! 🙂
Hi Johnny Mueller, if I am hired to waterproof, lath and apply a basecoat I prefer a peel and stick membrane, however most folks do install a felt paper and their own wire, but have trouble applying the base coat, that's where I come in.
If they tell me make certain the walls are perfect as they are installing tile over my finished work, I make perfect walls.
This way the tile set's even, and with less efforts.
Lastly, your redwood float is great for straightening out basecoats.
cheers.

good idea on not to wast stucco . 4" space on each side of float board . thank kirk& crew.
Hey speed dude, thank you.
Cheers and have a fantastic day, Kirk Giordano’s DIY plastering techniques
Hey Kirk, what do you think of stucco sprayers?
Hi Nettie, they are expensive and still take time to learn to use, plus very messy.
If you had a whole home such as a straw bale home they would be o.k. but they aren't very practical.
Your best bet to save time and cash are to learn to plaster, it's faster.

Can you add a plasticiser as a additive when preparing cement for plastering a cinder block wall??? Thank you
@Mario Torres Hi Mario, yes, however most cement plasters have them added already.

Howdy Mate, the three coat stucco system is an option for folks who don't wish to paint.
Most stucco homes around the world have one or two coats and then the folks paint or leave it as is.
An option since about 1926 when La Habra came up with the easy to apply maintenance free bagged color finish is applied when both costs have cured, if instead of painting you can have the home color coated or as some say a color finish hand applied.
cheers,
Kirk and Jason’s sand and cement rendering videos
Hey I meant to ask-
why does the base coat need a top coat? Is the base coat not waterproof, or not as strong, or is it just cosmetic?
Thanx
Howdy Sun, most homes & building have two coats of render with a certain texture or finish in the second coat. (then painted)
The main reason for a third coat is to add a color finish that is maintenance free, this means it won't need painting for a hundred years, sure the color will fade depending on the sunshine's heat in certain areas of the world but it will never come off or peel like paint, if applied properly, that is.
cheers,
Kirk and Jason’s sand and cement rendering videos
I've searched your videos, but I'm struggling to find an answer. On our new construction windows, do you install trim first, or stucco then trim over stucco?
Seems a simple question, but I've heard different answers. We dont really want the 1.25" standard stucco trim. We are looking to install a 3" flat trim all around the window.
We just cant figure out which is the right way to install it. I'm still searching your awesome videos….
Hello Linda and Doug, thank you and easy peasy lemon squeezy,
You first make sure your weather proof barrier is completed, than you can do as you wish.
Water proofing is always top priority, cosmetics second.
You can place on the paper, then embed with stucco or you can place on top of the finishes stucco, your home your choice.
Cheers,
kirk giordano
Hey Kirk love your videos, very straight forward and informative. I have a question for you. What do you think of quickrete's base coat and finish ready mix stuccos? I'm currently redoing an 1840's belltower in South Carolina that had a soft lime mortar stucco on it originally. It's 31 feet at the base, 21 feet high and tapered. Would you use the quickrete right out of the bag? or add sand, etc… I wont be using accelerators due to lack of experience with curved structures and want the long open time.
Thank you,
Michael
Hey Coyote dude, radius's do take a bit of practice, you have to swing mug from your trowel on at upward motions, sort of fun.
Quikrete wrote the book on cement and or stucco products, they sell same day systems where all you add is water and they sell just the stucco base coat where you add usually 3 times as much sand as the cement plaster.
Best wishes,
Kirk giordano plastering
when I am doing a sand finish I typically put color coat on with a trowel and let it set up a bit….then come back with a float and bring aggregate out and feather in edges…..I noticed that you don't let it set up and float it right away……why is that?……..it seems to work better for me when I let color coat "set up" a bit
Hi kirk dunn, this day it was about 100 degrees so the walls even though we went a couple inches thick were drying quick as we also added accelerators to the cement plaster.
Cheers,
kirk giordano

Watched few videos of yours and I must say poor quality job. Not sure why so many people are praising you so much.
Dan Max then you have no fucking idea how to do plasterstucco. Spreading a wall makes my dick hard.
Will always crack on the saw cuts weld-crete or not, always better to break off something, easier to hide joint when you float too… just saying 🙂
Howdy Mamclaug dude, exzackery, I agree one hundred percent. I explained this to the owner, he was very specific he did not want to break out any more than what was there, I improvised and tripled the wire at the seam and applied weld crete too, you and I and the home ower are on the same page, he will deal with the hairline whan and if it appears.
