How thick can you apply stucco on the same day?
Convert a garage into a living space.
How thick can you apply stucco on the same day, troweling on thick stucco with dash stucco finish
Hello my friends, how think can you apply stucco on the same day?
In this video, I’m, applying many coats of modern accelerated same-day stucco, very thick. In some areas, we are laying stucco over two inches thick. So, naturally, knowledge of fast-setting stucco makes life easier.
After we applied all the stucco, we allowed it to set; this was within 20-minutes, then floated it with a song float to bring out the sand so that the dash stucco finish would be easier to achieve.
It just takes material knowledge, my DIY homeowners.

"alot"
When I first visited America in my teens I was puzzled as to how people lived in wood houses that could be fist punched . I was also bemused as to the term Stucco ( UK =plaster) until I learned from Kirk !
Howdy Rena, I learned this from my brothers from the UK, who educated me too. Most said you goofy bloody wanker thats not plastering that called rendering, we eventually settled on, who gives a shit.

Perfect timing, I was just thinking that you hadn’t posted anything recently. Now you appear and make all those inches of material look like it’s no effort and BAM, flat, smooth and perfect. Go Kirk and Jay. How is Lou doing?
Hello, Clint my son Jason was on holiday, I can't record myself, but have thought about learning.

Kirk I resurfaced my driveway it worked out good but stayed rough w little puddles is there anything else I can use for self leveling that won’t break off?
Howdy Jugg, the best solution is to mix a cementitious materail that has a professional bonding ingredient.
I do this with Poly bond but Poly bond is not engineered for this purpose and the slack time takes practice.
I'd advise quikrete self levelers sold at all Home Depots and Lowes.

I would like to buy a dash brush but it isn’t in your Amazon store. Are you going to start carrying them?
BTW, you have a nice Amazon store. Great prices too!!!
Howdy Fact-Based, we have no store, we just refer folks to Amazon and suggest the tools we prefer.
Type in, "plastering dash brush" or "stucco dash brush'" one should appear, they usually cost about ten to twenty bucks.

Hi Kirk,
I recently saw a stucco finish that looked wispy, almost like the meringue on lemon meringue pie. What's the correct terminology for this?
I'm actually curious what different types of stucco finishes there are. I know of rock dash, and I'm not too sure what the technical term is for typical textured surface. There must be so many different ways to do it.
Love the videos. Thanks for any help! Cheers
Howdy Jay, it could be a dash finish shot by a Tommy gun that had the orifice removed, I did about 5 of these when I had about 15 employee's and a Tommy gun, nasty looking finishes but extremely interest looking.

Hello Mac Plastering my fellow plasterer, good thing I love the heat, it hit over 100 on this day, perfect for me, as the sun definitely makes love to the human body, but the clothes have to be removed for this process to take place, can't do that in these videos. Might get stucco on bare skin, we both know what the lye in stucco does to the skin on contact.

Kirk, i know exactly what you mean about not letting ivy grow onto your house, i once pulled ivy off the side of a garage for a customer by the time i was finished i discovered a window that had been completely completely covered by the ivy. Man does that stuff stick to your house but good better than paint or stucco. Ha ha . Have a safe and good 4 th Kirk and we'll see you on the next one. ✌

Over time that entire repair will show it will crack around the seem of the entire square. But good job
Hello Fernando, untrue, we tied in the new stucco netting with the existing stucco netting, I'd wager my dollars to your pennies this cant happen, however, you weren't there to witness expert lathing by two of the best in the industry, my son Jason and myself.
Not only was the tie in above all city codes, but the staples used were also an inch and a quarter so the leg set at least 7/8 in the studs.
Plus the strongest cement plaster sold in the USA was used, type in Rapid sets Eisenwall, this cement plaster is stronger than actual concrete,.
FYI, the averages concrete is 3,000 to 3,500 psi, type in Eisenwall PSI strength, you will be surprised, Eisenwall is not sold at ""any hardware stores" but instead professional plastering yards.
Rapid sets sister product are sold at all the major hardware stores, that product is also named Rapid set, the name of the company that engineers both cement plasters.
I'm on holiday so why would I take the time to reply to this foolish comment, someone may believe what you say, part of my reputation is to provide sound advice hence respond to remarks that are untrue.

Kirk! …. Youd have been better off with a 12" trowel and an 18" piece of architrave. Much faster and more accurate – Try it, I'm not geein' you up 😉
Howdy Peter, twelve inches trowels are too small for me my brother, in fact, I have never used a trowel so small, there are times where my midget trowel is better but only one out of 50 repairs.

LOL 🙂 back in the 70's before bigger trowels became popular here in the UK I regularly S&C floated internal walls on New-build sites with my little 12" Tyzac. Used to do 350 yards a day and then set it all the next day with that little Tyzac. The only difference the bigger trowels made when I got round to using them, was that I'd stab myself in the stomach when using it in confined spaces 🙂
I still got that old trowel (though don't use it) – it's so rusty now it's like a razor-blade.
Horses-For-Courses I guess – Keep up the good work in all that HEAT over there 😉
Morning Peter my fellow plasterer from the UK, as a rule, I recommend to folks whatever size trowel or hawk they are comfortable with.
I have other passions which help me with hand-eye coordination, like being an expert with Nunchucks so much, In fact, I made a pair from a solid steel bar and could barely handle them, but using them brought some serious strength and coordination to applying stucco.

My superman husband is going to be doing stucco for the first time after only watching your vids. We are so nervous! Any last minute words of wisdom?
Hello CatzEyes, your husband has courage, this is a mindset that is beyond measurement in money.
He will learn some things, this cant be taken from him, many won't even try.
Seems to me a man among men, even if the repair is not perfect,
The best advice is for him to not mix his own mud, I can't mix and apply!
The reason I make it appear easy is, either my brother Luuu or my son Jason Mixes usually perfect mud.
My strong advice is to place an add on craigslist seeking a hod carrier, "one who mixes," or another plasterer.

Kirk, how much weight is in that stucco patch? The only thing holding it up is staples? The staples are going into 1/2 – 3/4 inch wood? Thanks
Howdy my friend, as a rule, the leg of the staple has to be in the stud at least 3/4 of an inch to accommodate for the strength to withstand the weight.
Hence our staples are an inch and a quarter because of the plywood thickness.
Excellent question, as most folks take this for granted.

Won't that crack along the seam between the new and old stucco?
Hello Adam, my friend I’m on holiday at this time, however, I do have a laptop with me.

I hope to be doing some of this soon. I am replacing a second story deck and found termite damage. Fixing that, but I have to close up the end of a soffit and also seal up where a door is and then put a french door where a window is. It's EIFS now. Not really a fan of how they did it. No sheathing under the foam and it's 24" on center. Then there is where they notched the soffit of a cantilever on the end of it for a deck/balcony, didn't pitch it with a solid floor and guess what happened…Water and termites. Anyway, I am fixing it, but I'll have some stucco work to do and I'll be pouring through your videos again. Thank you for all you do.

Kirk thanks for the info yet again. I finally re-wired my house. It has cove ceilings, Sanded plaster 1/2" thick on top of 1/4" drywall with holes, 1950's house.
I had to cut in new outlets and switches and then patch things back up. I used plaster and sand mixed and the finish was perfect. But just took some time to be confident and re-do it if it doesn't look right. You are an inspiration to old world charm. My mason boss back in the day was the same type as you. Hey Kirk, will type S mortar give me a tan finish? Also would you use a bonding agent on a stone firpelace that's not painted. Sorry for all the ? And hope the earthquake didn't get you
Evening trash digger, the only cement plaster I'm aware of is Lehigh Hanson's white cement plaster or Eisenwall cement plaster will leave a tan finish as both are white cement, the sand is brown as a rule, hence a tan finish.
You would have to visit a plastering material yard to purchase either of these
Like Westside building materials.
FYI, Eisenwall takes a lot of practice and sets really fast, cost about 30 to 40 a bag as it a specialty cement, Hansons cost about 15 bucks and is like any other cement plaster except its white instead of grey you just add sand, takes roughly an hour to dry.

Great videos
Why do you start from the top sometimes and the bottom sometimes, what's the difference…
Also I'm thinking of an inside garage stucco over cinder block. It's very porous, do I need to wet it and which premixed product would be the best to use.
Also you said your biggest advice would to get someone that mixes it while you're applying it would that stand true with this project as well.
The wall that I want to stucco is 11 feet tall I am about 25 feet and since that I'm not a pro can you stop halfway through the job and continue the next day.
Evening Highway Dude, A good plasterer can start where he or she wants to.
As a rule, I dont use pre-mixed stucco or even pre-mixed grout for tile as they are nowhere near strong enough.
On this repair I used Eisenwall but that not sold at stores only plastering yards.
I like having someone else mixing so I can stay ahead plus have someone to talk to.
An easy product for one to use would be Rapid Set sold at Home Depot or Lowes, the sand and cement is already in the bag you just add water.
For your project it might take too long with Rapid set cement plaster, I'd recommend using Hanson's Lehigh cement plaster and add three parts sand to every one part cement plaster.
Lastly keep the blocks moist when applying.

In my opinion, the vines give the wall an antique look. Looks like it could have been laid during the Roman empire.
Good evening Gnostic, the vines do look cool, however, they often hold too much rainwater keeping a wall wet. Sometimes they do tend to rot the wood and even penetrate the stucco after so many years.

Hi Kirk,
I remember you did a video on hep c treatment… my friend had that treatment and he says he never felt right mentally after… have you had any long term effects mentally after your treatment? Just curious… love your videos.
One more question: if you putting bonding agent on a masonry surface do you still wet it before you apply your next coating?
Thx!
Evening Denis, I felt the same, I can't say anything negative as I was given Harvoni by the company, I think that even though I didn't feel different, the drug could have saved my liver.
If I apply a bonding agent on a wall, and the temperature is warm to hot, no need.
However, if it's scorching hot like 95 degrees on up and I'm working in the sun while the wall is on fire with absorbed heat, O yea, I moist or wet them often with a water hose and nozzle.
We have to keep them cool, or the mud will set to fast, which means twice the strength needed.

Kirk, we usually just use the Hardy Backer or Cement Board to level out the walls. Here in New Mexico, the weather beats up our materials and will crack out brown coats if its applied to thick.
Evening Sam black, I was in Mexico watching this one dude for about 15 minutes, he turned around and asked me, "what you want to learn," I said, man, I do stucco too, he and the rest of the fellas laughed, so naturally I did also.
I go to Mexico often as I love that kind of heat if I lived in 90-degree weather every day, I would be one happy man. I would prefer to work at 85 degrees.
100 degrees I have to keep a water hose next to me to keep the wall wet or work my arse off.

Dig it. Great vid as usual. Thankyou.
Off the subject, do you have a recommendation for aggregrate concrete sealer? Do you do that at all?
Evening Eric, I would google plastering and cement yards to see which ones they sell.
As they sell to the contractor who has to guarantee his work. The ones at the hardware stores are for the public no doubt they are less expensive, but cement material yards sell the best sealers.

Kirk has showed me a bunch of stuff.. but the most important is to have fun everyday. As a stucco pro it’s easy to get away from the passion of the trade. Thank you Kirk for lightening things up for me.. you make it look easy, but we both know it isn’t.

Hello Kirk, I love your videos! Can I use La Habra Santa Barbara mission color coat finish over a painted stucco house. I will off course pressure wash and use weldcrete…
Evening Jack, it depends, if you have a dense or coarse texture, no. If you have a fine or medium sand finish, then yes, but this takes a lot of practice.

Help! Thank you for all the great videos, I've watched about 50 since I tore into my stucco addition a week ago and found so much rot. Something I can't find-when do you just say enough and tear the entire stucco off? I live on an island in Southeast Alaska. There are very few stucco houses here, for a reason! Our average annual rainfall is 130 inches. My original house was built in the 50's and I think the stucco is in fairly good shape as I've been in most of the exterior walls but the 80's addition was built to match and not as well apparently. Thing is, even though there's a lot of rot (plywood sheathing and studs in the corners) there's a lot of good wood too. do I get rid of the rotten sheathing, replace the rotten studs and patch?? Two story, about 1,000 sq ft total space. I don't think there's a contractor in town who does stucco so it would be me and my contractor friend. We've built some stuff together before. This is long and if you make it to the bottom and reply- thanks.
Another Great Video. Thx…
Evening John, thank you, my friend.
