I know Kirk its hard work , an no I can't do that kind of work everyday. An if you want it done right have a pro do it.
Hey Peter, that's what I'm talking about,
I'm getting ready to pick up the phone to call a professional to do for me something I can't do myself.

Why I said Tag an then in quotes "How much sand in cement ? " is that if was put in the tags of the video ask jay. Yes call a pro if you don't know, I always say. cheers bro. Peter
Howdy Peter, that's a trick question, as the answer to how much sand is in cement? is "None!"
Only rocks are in in cement of different sizes for structural desires.
Now the question how much sand is in cement plaster is usually 3 to one, technical boring stuff.

No trick , if you put the title of the video in mata tags people can find the video better is all. Now pass a beer an a slice of pizza ok.. ? salutta aha cheers .
Thank you for your videos, Kirk, they really help me and other people. I'm not a plasterer, but I did some DIY things around my house e.g. fixed my masonry window sill which was missing half of it, gave it a nice smooth steel trowel finish. Had to plaster (not sure if you can call that plastering, as I'm not even sure what does that mean) a part of wall inside my house and many other things. It's a fun thing to do, too bad I'm not a plasterer. Maybe some day.
Morning Eddie Spruce, plastering is a technically a name usually for interior plasters such as diamond, structo-lites, veneers and such, while stucco is a term usually that means all exterior stucco work,
However all the bags I buy for exterior work call themselves cement plaster, it's a bit confusing.

Have you ever used Dryvit or Decoplast stucco?
Evening Alejandro Peralez Jr., yes, in fact we did a very large gable wall today with the Dry-Vit acrylic color finish.
And no, I have not used or heard of Decoplast stucco till now.

Thanks for the great videos. Can stucco be used over a painted block wall? If not, can I dimple the block surface, with a hammer, to get a good bond? Thanks.
Evening Andrew Bacchi, yes stucco can go over a painted block wall.
I have about 5 videos that show in details how to do this, first pressure wash very well, then apply a bonding agent, next you are ready to stucco ,

Hey man love your videos I appreciate you sharing your knowledge! I got the 3:1 mix but unsure about the type of cement to use? Its not just portland cement is it? Or what type of cement do I ask for at my local brick supply yard? And mason sand is the right sand correct? Thank you sir.
Evening Filmore slim, I use hansons premium, it's a combination of common and plastic.
You can use it too, I buy it at Westside building materials but all the major material yards carry it.
Almost every sand known to man can be used for plastering as long as there is no salt in it.
I use Oly, or felton usually,
I've read some sites online which specify how important sand is,. I say Bull, as long as you don't get it from a beach you should be fine.
And, yes about 30 years ago I went to alameda beach and took a wheelbarrow full to finish a job , it became soft after a couple of years as it had salt in it.
Most material yards wash their sand before selling it to the public, to get the salt out.
Cheers and have a Happy New Years, Kirk Giordano’s DIY plastering tips
@Kirk & Jason Giordanos DIY plastering and stucco tips I am not sure that in New Zealand we can get that combination mix of cement and think it is just portland cement. Can I just use straight Portland and Sand – or should I use an additive?
Hi agin Carol, I would use plain old Portland cement plaster my self, If you can't spread it it's not mixed properly, you can add lime for extra spreadability but I never have had to. Carol, it really does take years to learn to spread mud or plaster expertly.

I applied a scratch coat and that night it dropped a bit below freezing about 30deg F. The stucco is in an area that will not be subject to much sunlight or rain. What is the best way to tell if the days work is botched?
Rich Beer, man, thats cold,
You should be fine, stucco like concrete are best applied in moderate temperatures between 50 to 70 degrees, in the real world this luxury won't apply for many days,
I have applied in this type of cold before too, the stucco takes a lot longer to cure as a result, some say it will weaken the stucco.
4 years ago I applied while about 40 degrees it was so cold and I was working so hard I had my shirt off, the temp at that night went down to 27 or lower, fortunately my walls were fine.
If it had rained and was not set because of the cold now that would have been worrisome.

Hi Kirk I'm Armando room San Antonio I consider myself a good very good plaster I like to think my work us lifetime guaranty but I do look at your videos and see some helpful if like any questions about how we work down south feel free to get back
The rendering job i'm on atm they're using 5:1 onto concrete blocks. Why do you think he would use this ratio?
@thbuk Morning buk dude, I don't know or wonder why anyone would use any ration, sorry,
In this video I'm explaining the rations we use.
Many folks choose different ratios for whatever their reasons it would be goofy to guess.
If I were to guess it might be to save cash on cement, however you don't really save cash on cement as the cement plaster could possibly be not be as strong, therefor no savings.
I'm certain they have good reasons other than this.
Best wishes.
kirk giordano plastering
5:1 ratio is not good enough. It will worn out. Several days later, touch it or scratch it and you will found out that your plaster is gradually droping out its sand, it is not a good mixing for plastering.
Lots of great videos, Kirk. Will you be doing a video on putting stucco on foam board insulation?
Morning Jack Shuman, thank you, I have done my share of Dry-vit insulations, however it was before we started making these video's, I don't get many calls anymore for this system, they are more for commercial work, as in hospitals, the last project we did with the Dry-Vit application was the Kaiser hospital in Hayward.
If a client calls and wants this system we will definitely show how it completed.
Cheers!

I was give it the wrong mix for a large window repair. I've applied the scratch coat, just to find out it's only Portland cement and sand – no hydrated lime. Is this OK,? Should I apply the brown and finish coat with hydrated lime added? Side question – can I combine the brown and finish coats?
Howdy Key dude, I am sorry but I don't know if you can or not, I can as I have 30 years of practice. I have no clue of your skill level, sorry.

+Kirk & Jason Giordanos DIY plastering and stucco tips
What I mean is is it possible? For example, you mention elsewhere doing all three coats in one is impossible regardless of skill because you will get cracks later (barring any fancy additives). Is 2 coats similarly impossible? Or quite a normal way to do it (provided no fancy finishes are required)?
Morning Key lime dude,
I do the majority of patches with same day two coat cement plasters, with textures included, so yes, this is possible.
Home Depot and Lowe's are full of products that allow, the average homeowner to do this, very user friendly products such as Quikrete stucco, Sakrete stucco, Rapid set stucco products where you just add water, but when mixing any same day cement plasters
(DO NOT OVERMIX) as an excess of overmixing actually weakens the integrity of these products.
Read your bag, I believe it's 3 to 5 minutes max on mixing, depending on your choice of material.
Best wishes, my ambitious friend.

Good stuff. I'm going to try only 2 coats with standard Portland/sand mix only. It's been a few days since I did the scratch, so I'll add the final coat now.
Thanks again
Hello Kkey Lime dude, close, a tip that may help clarify stucco application.
All stucco coats since 1926 have been two coat systems, In 1926 La Hara come up with a color coat lime based product that when applied are maintenance free.
Only possibly one out of 100 home today have this third coat applied, many new homes do but not all.
Confused?
No worries, if you don't understand all there is to know about stucco as I don't either, and I'm a 30 year seasoned stucco dude that lives and breathes stucco systems.

Awesome! So I can just use Portland/sand again.I'm adding no color – will be painted over after. So brown/finish together ok? Basically s 2 coat stucco: scratch and brown as final coat?
Sorry, just to add, I was going to try float it a bit with a car sponge later. It doesn't need to be perfect. The original is 40 year old basic Portland/sand mix apparently.
Hello Sir – Can I use the same ratio by adding crushed stones for drive way?
Howdy Addy, what is stucco? sand and cement,
What is Concrete? very similar, also Portland cement with various size rocks as the aggregate, not sand.
If you need a lot I would suggest you order from a cement company that will deliver with a cement truck, if you don't require a little just buy the bags, you just add water, foolproof.
Cheers,
Kirk giordano
Thank you sir! Its a small repair job on the drive way. I wanted to figure out the "ratio" part for my weekend project 🙂 Appreciate your help!
Howdy Adddy, most folks add two to three parts rocks to the cement plaster to make concrete.

Why is it I always read about using a 1/2 bag of lime to a bag of portland than the 3 parts sand.
Howdy Mars dude, excellent question, you can buy bags of common, which you should add lime or you can buy bags of plastic which helps in spreadability.
I buy premium cement plaster as it has both Common for strength and plastic for spreadability.
Plastic it what they use here instead of Lime as lime is expensive, so they say the plastic or the plasticisers additives that are added are just as good, "My Arse"
Sort of like saying corn syrup is just as good as real honey from bees .
Were all just minnows in a sea of sharks.

Kirk giordano on teaching plastering
Thanks for the response Kirk. I haven't purchased too much cement product yet as all I have needed is mortar for a few things. I will keep this in mind and spend the extra cash for the quality stuff. I recently found what seems to be a good building materials joint that caters mostly to the cement/drywall/plaster fields and plan to take a trip there soon. I was tempted to buy a decent amount of stucco from Home Depot but had my drought's as to, well, quite a bit of what H.D. and Lowes sell…I want the real deal as they say. It was taught to me long ago to purchase the best supplies/materials you can afford as it is a false economy when your fighting your tools and materials when the work is hard enough on it's own, at least for those just starting out, myself included. So thanks yet again and peace to you and yours.
hi kirk.
I am watching your all video's you are the best .I got some stucco patch up please tell me what I mix sang & cement. for scratch coat &brown coat & finish coat& I want to get pebble dash finish &should I use bonding ajent.thanks
Howdy Yourik, bonding agents are used for applying plaster or stucco over sealed or painted surfaces, they are only as good as the wall they are applied to, so that wall must be pressure washed clean enough to eat off.

Kirk’s how to plastering video’s
Hello Kirk and all Giordano family,
I wanted to thank you for all your videos, they've been very helpful to all youtubers like myself who are DIY's. I recently tackled a project that has not turned out as well as I would have like it, but after watching this video I think I have a solution. My situation is as follows: I applied my brown coat yesterday, using Home Depot's quickrete stucco mix, but I had a hell of a time spreading that sucker out. It will dry quicker than I can get back to it with my darby, within 5-7 minutes it had harden to a point where I couldn't get to spread it to low/high spots with the darby. After watching this video, I'm gonna mix my own using your instructions and hopefully I can better results. I have to also mention that it was a hot day, and I'm guessing that did not help me either. Any advise I can get from you would be very appreciated, and even from any one else too. FYI you guys are turning into celebrities, I've talked to folks/ordinary people about my project and they quickly give my advise on watching your videos (most everyone knows you guys), keep up the great work, and best wishes.
Gabriel Lariz
Good morning Gabriel, that's too cool that folks recognize our Youtube presence, I like that especially after 7 years of youtubing.
I would suggest you hydrate the walls as you go I do.
This means as you plaster (if it's a hot day) mist the walls ahead of you with a water hose, takes a knowledge of materials but I think you will understand the amount needed. apply your brown coat fat and ugly as you need the fat to keep the mud alive for daring, other wise as you found out the mud will be too thin to work.

Thanks guys for your advise and for your prompt response. I watched the video as you suggested (awesome work). Next weekend I will do as you suggest, I'm gonna soak that thirsty wall, and use some plastic cement to ease the handling on the stucco. I will get back to you as I make progress. I noticed that Kirk uses a lot of products that are not available at Lowes Depot, and that kindda sucks. Most of them are specialty products available to the plastering folks like you.
Thanks again, I'll stay tune for the next video.
Good afternoon Gab, you can try googling Westside Building Materials or other plastering yards for the professional product we use or buy from Amazon, of course cement plaster would cost to much to ship.

Hey Kirk, question for you…
Can you use 3 parts of plaster sand (fine) and 1 part portland cement without anything else for the scratch and base, block foundation?
or is it better to use 3 parts sand to 1 part Masonry cement?
Good afternoon dude, yes, for block foundations only a skim coat is required not two coats, however the skim coat must be at least 1/2 thick or when it rains the grout lines will show.
Live long and plaster
teaching repairing your number 1 investment, your home
but which of the two recipes are better to use lol that is the question the 3 parts sand to 1 part Masonry cement? or 1 part portland cement without anything else
hello Kirk can you use type n cement for stucco?
Howdy Gilbert,
Type N Mortar Mix is a preblended mixture of sand and masonry cement or sand, lime and portland cement.
It's mainly used or laying brick, block and stone.
it's also used for tuck pointing or repairing existing mortar joints.
But can also be used for scratch and brown coat in stucco applications.

Hey Kirk, great videos! I've been a mason since 1980 and have plastered on and off, but lately I'm running into some old time restoration projects, and I'm perplexed as to what I should really do. Do you ever run into the old time mix of the lime mortars? I'm hearing now that we have been destroying the integrity of these walls by putting our hard plasters on. I'm really interested in using the old time mixtures, but man are they hard to figure out, little knowledge left and the info is hard to acquire. I know they do a lot of it across the pond, but do you have any experience? MAN, that would be a valuable video to us, if you have knowledge!! Thanks so much for what your doing, knowledge is power! Doug
Howdy Doug dude, real lime plaster takes forever to set, sometimes weeks and hard to come by unless your willing to transport from the UK.
Portland cement has been in England for about 150 years, while here for nearly 120 years or so.
Bottom line is if a person was adamant they wanted lime plastering id to have to pass on the project or tell them you get the material here,
I'll apply it. the video here is the tip of the icbug in regards to lime plastering https://youtu.be/jI54QRx0_H0

Hey Kirk, thanks so much! I love your video! Very helpful! I wish we could get back to that process again, its quite interesting how its such a great product but I see how it has gone away since time is money. Your the man!!
Doug Hinrichsen Doug thank you for your question. I asked Kirk some questions about the old materials and could not remember lime. We used to mix it 9/3/1 in the mixer. 9 shovels of sand. 3 of Portland cement and 1 shovel of lime. It's coming back. Those ratios worked good for the rough and scratch coats. Don't remember if we mixed it different for the finish or not.
Thanks for the video. It's straight to the point and very basic for anyone to understand, unlike the other channels I watched before this where they get all technical with mathematical calculations and metrics etc, etc, etc
Howdy Peter, again, exzackery.
For well over 30 years I look at projects, the amount of sand and cement within minutes is calculated in my head without pen or paper.

Thanks for what you do Kirk. I do want to clarify something, at the start of this video you said that the 3:1 mixes referred to lbs., then you clarified, and stated that it refers to parts, such as buckets or wheelbarrows. The latter is correct, it is not by weight but by volume that these part are counted, regardless of weight. Thanks again Kirk.
William Bigatti Correct William but I believe Kirk was trying to explain the ratios or relationships of each material to the another. If you measured the weight of each shovel for both materials the same would apply.
Thanks bro always wonder that now I know I just have to plaster holes an line 6 bricks

Is pargin cement the same as stucco cement?
Howdy Ricky, parging means getting the stucco on by any means necessary, usually by brushing it on, It does not have to be pretty.
The term stucco cement is similar to cement plaster or just plain Stucco.
it references exterior cement plaster.
Different words all mean the same thing.
Also different words with the same meaning, Rendering, Muck, and Mud.

Hey Kirk, some questions about two different applications for cement and sand. #1) Back in the 70's, I worked for a fella that did weekend plastering jobs. I remember we put 9 sand, 3 cement, and 1 of something else. So the ratios were 9/3/1. Do you know what material that single shovel might have been?
#2) Recently, I finished grouting (tiles) a shower stall. The mastic was this nasty sticky stuff with some kind of urethane or plastic in it. I realized it when it was time to rinse my hands and clothes that the damn stuff was there to stay. Do you know if there is a way to mix my own plaster and mastic the old fashion way without using that crappy nasty stuff? I know what the arguments are for using the stuff for grouting…reduces shrinkage. I have laid a bunch of tile in my day and never but never had a problem with shrinking grout. I knew if the slump was right, I would have great results and could seal the joints when the grout set and dried. I appreciate all you do for us do it your selfers.
Evening Dude, thank you,
How much sand do we use for each coat of stucco?
Scratch coats are mixed at 1 part Portland cement plaster to 2-1/4 to 4 parts sand, brown coats are mixed at 1 part Portland cement plaster to 3 to 5 parts sand, and finish coats are 1 part cement to 1-1/2 to 3 parts sand.
The above is our formula, however, there more than one way to skin a cat.

You can add hydrated lime which makes your mud more workable. I'd bet the '1' was lime.
Howdy guys, I too would have suggested lime, today they add lime in the bags much more convenient.
As far as additives for tile grout I've used sika before, but found if you purchace top of the line grout, additives are not necessary.

One very important if not the most important part of the mix, is water ratio. Rarely do I ear about how much water to add!
Good Evening Jocelyn, if were mixing in our towable mixers, the water nozzle stays on while the sand is added. When enough sand and cement is added, we then look at the mix, if more water needs to be added, we add more if the mix is too soupy we add more sand.
This is how we mix.
If your mixing in a bucket try, a half-gallon then mix, if another half-gallon is needed, add it. Now you know your formula for the cement sand and plaster your using. If this does not answer your question type in how to mix plaster, we do have some videos that go into the detail you are asking.

Kirk Giordano plastering Inc. Thank You very much Kirk for your reply and info, it made my day a lot easier and pleasant! I asked about the water because yesterday I did some Parging on my house and it took me 4 hours to do a 3feet by 10 feet. I use quickrite Parging mix thinking it would be safe to have a reputable product. I mixed one whole bag with the exact amount of water as per instructions (4.5 litre). The stuff was so hard to apply and, it was written on the bag not recommended to add more water. Today, I use half the bag with a little more water(.25 litre) and what a difference, I actually enjoyed it. Without your input and your videos, would have scrapped the project. Thanks to You, I will be able to finish the 3 other bags and saving a bunch of money! God bless You and your family!
Dear Kirk and family,
First of all thank you for all of your videos. My question if you don’t mind is that we have a course sand finish on a 30 year old house. I am replacing the windows using your removal method and it’s working well it is a one coat stucco system, but I’m doing it in 2 coats due to lack of skills. I practice my troweling and blending is ok, however my green float technique is not the best, a lot comes out to smooth. I am using a course sand and in some cases, sifting it for the courser particles. (Practicing on cement board). My last batch is very course but I’m afraid I might be loosing the bonding action of the cement because of the lack of fine sand I am using 1 part Portland, 1/2 part lime 3 parts sand. I add a bonding agent to the mix and am using a diluted WELD-CRETE to the surface some fiberglass mesh to cracks. I finished one side of house and it’s ok. I primed with PPG Gripper paint, followed by 2 coats of Benjamin Moore exterior paint for stucco. I am doing this with small batch mixes, the reason is, I am by myself, sunny side of building, it’s Az and it’s hot. I have been waiting till the sun goes on the other side. Can my sand be too course? Is sifting necessary? Should my green float be as dry as possible?
Evening Ray, try using Rapid set stucco. It has a 16/20 course sand in it. Rapid set stucco comes in ten to 25-pound boxes and large bags too, all you do is add water,
Its the perfect course sand. Just dont over-mix like all same day cement plaster. If one over mixes, it beat up the strength.

Greetings Kirk, a quick question, do you ever have an instance to use a superplasticizer or add pozzolans to your mix? If so, how would you dose for stucco mixes? Thanks Kirk, keep then coming!
Would this same mixture work for masonry? I’ve just been hired by a mason and right now all I do is haul blocks to him all day while he lays them. He told me I will eventually have to mix and I want to know what the best mixture is for that type of work.
How many 5 gallon buckets of sand to one 92 lb bag of Portland cement. The jabber is not needed
Been watching your videos. I greatly appreciate the content.
I was told 1 part Portland, 1 part hydrated lime, and 3 parts bar sand. Is lime not always necessary?

Thanks Kirk
