Howdy lallenh, fair enough, in my years of applying interior finishes I’ve never said I can trowel down any wall like glass, nor will I.
I’ve found folks sometimes have unrealistic expectations when a fella says the words “smooth like glass”, I would however be more than happy to refer you to those few folks who do say they expect a finish like glass.
I realize I’m not the best nor do I wish to be, no glory in that title.
Thanks for watching and have a great day!

We all continue to learn right through life.I love your vids guys as it gives me such an insight to how work is done in other countries and not to mention the different products that is available. We used to polish lime plaster to glass like but we have had architects that specify a non glass like finish if wall is to receive a painted finish.I am really keen to try marmorino/venetian plaster finishes.
Hi dismaldog, I guess those architects want to waterproof the walls?
I have used the finishes you mentioned but in this economy (the last 6 years) circumstances, put a hold on a lot of finishes that are cool to look at but expensive to apply.
Best wishes, and thanks for watching.

How thick should the base coat be?
Hi bin1127, about 1/16 of an inch to an eighth of an inch.
Different plasterers all have their own opinion on this topic.
cheers,
Kirk giordano plastering
Thanks for replying.
I really like how you can trowel it on with very long strokes to just the right thickness on the first pass. Are indoor plaster mixed a lot thinner to allow laying it on like that?
Morning Bin1127, this interior lime has the smallest aggregate know to plaster with, thats why it' trowles so far.
Best wishes,

I see. That is interesting to know, Thanks.
I plastered my walls 5 years ago and want to change the color this has been helpful .
Thanks !
Hello Melissa Berg, thank you, there are many different plasters that can used to achieve the same effects.
I like the diamond with a diamond base myself as the easiest and strongest.

Kirk Do you add the 1/3-1/2 gauging or is this a pre mixed plaster? Love your videos they are "EXTREMELY HELPFUL " Thank you-Thom
Morning Thom Miller,thank you,
This is eco pure lime plaster system, the colors can be added.
Keep in mind most lime plastering top coats flex just a bit more than portland plasters, but lime top coat have the least amount of psi strength, this means if a bathroom door, window, heck even a shower door slams, this causes vibrations, the slightest movement has a tendency to hairline crack interior or exterior walls, this topcoat or any of the other lime finishes available will not stop a 50 ton home from movement, therefore the base system is ten times more important than this video explains.

I'm rehabbing a house here in northern illinois and I'm gonna stucco the shower. your video has been so I formative! do you have a video explaining each stucco step and what it's called?
Evening Susan Marie Battis I do have a more detailed video of this product, however different methods are used by many, I was asked specifically to use the products in the video so I did.
the video is here, https://youtu.be/rOJdOqms2MY
best wishes,
kirk giordano,
Man I was thinking through out the video "how is he going to seal it?" And you answered it at the last few seconds! Really enjoy your videos Kirk!
Morning Zach, I did indeed answer it, however, the black soap does not last forever.
Although I did this color lime video,
I prefer tile as it rarely gets moldy, the grout sometimes does, but the tile is maintenance free.
This system is pretty but too much maintenance for me.
It can and will mold if used inside a shower, the bathroom walls are fine as well as kitchens, bedrooms and family rooms but not inside the shower, although I tell folks this they still ask for it inside the shower,
Things that make you go Hmmmmm.

+Giordano's plastering & stucco repair videos whatever brings home the bread Kirk!
Howdy zach, that's not my style, I will never apply any veneer finishes again in a shower, for no amount of cash as they are too much maintenance, that does not mean folks won't hire others to do this,
However I will apply these finishes, to bathroom walls, kitchens, bedroom and so on, after 30 years of applying every porduc tmade I have come to the conclusion all these acrylic, cementitious and or lime finishes will get black mold. and fungi.
Heck even tile grout get this conditions, but nowhere nears these lime or cementitious finishes.
Best wishes,
kirk giordano
Kirk Giordano plastering Inc. Thank you so much! I have been researching showers and thought of the Keene cement and lime plaster for showers using schluter Kerdi board and waterproofing behind. I just will have to hire strong guys to bring up porcelain tiles, thinset and grout instead of bags of Keene cement and snowdrift lime, etc. I live in the thick humidity of Ohio. Your experience and talk of mold and cost of maintenance of these groutless showers have changed my mind.
Hey Kirk, You're the man! I've learned so much with your channel. I really appreciate it. One question please, I am remodeling a bathroom and researched Merlex, they produce a "Super Shower Finish" product that they recommend for shower enclosures. I would love to get your opinion or experience with this product. Thanks
Howdy Beast dude, I won't do another shower video as I have used every product that's ever been sold they all suck, in a shower that is, use tile, rarely any maintenance,
all the shower finishes need maintenance otherwise they develop black mold which when inhaled kicks anyone's arse.
Best wishes,

Hey there kirk I was wondering can I apply another coat on top of my finish coat. Let say it doesn't look good. And how I do it before it set after it set? Dry ? Wet ?
And how can I get a smootb mat finish. Thanks
Morning Pascal Dude, yes, you can apply another coat or two over the original finish if you don't like the color or the
finish.
You will know it's setting when the color starts to lighten as newly applied lime or stucco is dark like a wet brick, al like a brick, then turns much lighter when dryer conditions return.

So you said pure lime. So no sand at all? Just color and lime? I want to learn more. Im in the Phoenix area and i do a lot of faux but this to me is more high end. Heres my website. http://mayflowercustomfinishes.com/
I would love to come down and meet you guys. Thanks
Morning Ray Dude, I don't recommend this system in a shower but for all other walls in your kitchen or bathroom, it's great.
I stopped applying in showers myself after long term studies.

Kirk Giordano plastering Inc. yes i wouldn't do showers i know in your comments your not big on it but here in Phoenix the million $ homes love it in the interior of the home. When you say pure lime is there sand in it at all or would it be soft?
Morning Ray dude, soft?
lime is crushed limestone heated made into a putty or powder, when water is added it turns back into limesone, which is stronger than sand,
Good question brother.

Kurt, I'm a painter by trade (don't even usually tape, but end up having to do all kinds of feather repairs and stuff :/ ) and I'm planning on plastering my bathroom in my house I'm redoing. With the mirror finish thing, I actually strangely on my second attempt almost got it (as in, got it on large sections) with Structolite (only plaster my local HD carried) over a piece of Hardi-Backer. To do it all I did essentially was just really wet it a lot, wet the Hardi a lot before applying (about half a small spray bottle like you have for a 3×5 sheet) and then after it was up and troweled semi-smooth and drying a little, I just sprayed a ton of water on it (almost the rest of the spray bottle) and just troweled it smooth with a 14" pool trowel. I mixed it very loose, too, though. I dunno, I was surprised for my first time ever plastering how smooth it came out, especially with something as rough as Structolite (also, I wish I had Structolite as a kid, I'd have built so many things. 😀 😀 ) Is it possible to forego bonding agents on these cement boards if you just wet them a lot?
For my bathroom, it's likely going to be all Wonderboard. Do you recommend a Structolite basecoat, or should I just use the Quikrete concrete bonder and use Diamond over it? The Diamond and Imperial basecoats are hard to get locally, but Structolite is easy, and Diamond Veneer is also a decent drive as well. I'd like to polish it, too, and bought a white LaHabra bag of pigment.
Thanks again for your videos and help. I've watched a lot of them! One guy I also watched, he does interesting stuff with homemade clay plasters. His channel is called "The Nito Project" and he does a very amazing polished clay plaster. Thanks again, and sorry for such a wordy reply.
Howdy Gil Bates, I don't apply any plasters anymore in showers as they mold too easy, I stopped a few years back now the only tile do I recommend.
Hope this does not deter you from applying it where you wish, I do use these finishes over and all areas that don't get wet.
If you are good with the tools, you can use Structo-lite. No bonding agent is necessary if you apply over a cementitious board, as when wet they together create nature mechanical bond.
Hopefully, if this is indeed a shower, you applied a moister barrier under the cement board also as all these substrates are not waterproof.
Best wishes,

Oh, the whole tub and shower is getting tiled with cement boards and Aquadefense moisture barrier up to the ceiling. I also plan on tiling the entire lower half of the walls. So it would only be plaster for the upper wall halves and ceiling.
Also, depending on budget, I may not rip down all of the existing drywall in that upper half area. Would Quikrete bonding agent be OK to put Diamond finish over the painted drywall?
Thanks again!
Good stuff as usual
Howdy Grant Dude, thank you.
Peace love and happiness to all.
Plastering and repair tips for your number one investment
I have made my own lime plaster and have had it aging for just over a year in plastic buckets with an inch of water covering. From the research I have done I need to prime prpanted walls with a quartz based paint or the limestone won't stick to the surface. I have been unable to locate the orimer can you make a recommendation please and thank you 🙂
Howdy Tracy, I would recommend "Weld Crete bonding agent by Larson's" click the link in our description above or go to any plastering yards.

Kurt, I heard you mention in another video that you used tile in your own shower (tile over plaster). The common internet wisdom seams to be that you should only use small tiles over plaster (due to adhesion limitations?). Would like to prepare my shower walls with plaster before tiling. Any thoughts?
Good evening Greg, I do indeed prefer tile to any plaster I have used in the past 35 years, as all plasters in a shower require maintenance.
I first apply a peal and stick to walls then wire and apply cement plaster, now it's ready for tile.
Or you can apply a peal and stick and use any of the heavy cementitious board as a background for the new tile.
Of course, plastering areas of your home with Tadelakt, Eco-stucco or any other lime plaster is really cool looking.
In a shower, I don't advise anymore, even if there are 5 vents in that ceiling.
Peace love and happiness to all
