How to plaster with Portland cement adding accelerator
Hi guys and gals, in this step by step video I use an additive for quick setting the portland based product I am applying.
It’s purchased at Westside building materials in Oakland.
Luminite is calcium aluminate cement, which mean it accelerates the curing time of plaster this accelerator is added to portland cement plaster which we mix with additional sand and water on the job.
Some products such as rapid set cement plaster that is sold at home depot or Lowes do not require any additives such as accelerators as they are already in the bagss.
Rapid set cement plaster has everything included you just add water, this is one of the reasons it’s so popular with the big chain hardware stores such as Lowe’s and Home depot they cater to homeowners and contractors with little or no knowledge.
They take the guesswork out, just add water, Also, don’t mix this material more than 3 to 5 minutes! Wonder why? you should! I’m not answering this question as I want to hear your thoughts of why not if you have the time.
The contractor for this project did the complete kitchen remodel. His name is Lee Tolledsrud, He is an excellent remodeling contractor. You may reach him at (510) 325-5262 Lee is great to work with.

Replaced a few windows around my front door with glass blocks and thanks to your videos, re-doing the stucco went a lot smoother. Still have to do the texture coat but I'm half way there. You always say you make it look easier than it is and man you aint kiddin'! I had a terrible time just getting the mud off the hawk, there is definitely some technique there. Thanks for all the great videos Kirk, and keep them coming, very informative. -Mike
@ITSALLFYA Thanks for the shout out, I was a hod carrier for three years, and still do it sometimes. We used to joke, man u know why we’re called hod carriers? couse man this is harrrd work!
No doubt, brother.
These videos will give you the opportunity to explain to some of the plasterers how to do it!
Thanks for watching, have a groovy day and best wishes.

Is that portland cement better than stucco? whats stronger, what wont chip off quick?
@kimkrisrich Hi Kim, Portland cement plaster is stucco!
Traditional stucco consists of Portland cement-based materials and sand, mixed with water to form workable stucco.
Stucco is a water-shedding, hard, impact-resistant, fire-resistant, and color-retentive, exterior finish material.
Whomever you hire should know how, why and what material must be used for your exterior.
Have a groovy day!

Hey Kirk. Great video's and thanks for taking the time to share. Ignore morons like funnymarco, who I suspect knows as much about building work as he knows about spelling and punctuation.
Keep up the great work.
Howdy Dajoca, thanks for the bone, sharing the knowledge is what life all about. Folks who insult me don't really bother me much in fact my best friends talk crap about me, but the difference is they do it to my face, which I usually find quite humorous. Have a groovy evening.

Hi..I like to figure out how can I make a sand and cement mix that will crack after drying.. multiple cracks..like what most people try to fix…I like to have the whole wall like that.I have a picture of what I am trying to do. thank you
Hey cat, a wall will crack if you miss attaching wire to studs or too much plaster on not enough. I don’t recommend you do either of these as the wall will be compromised. Instead apply both coats same day with stucco and steel trowel it smooth. It will crack like an egg. You can also place a 4X4 on the wall and gently tap it with a big hammer. Vibrations cause cracking. You didn't here this from me!
Have a groovy day!

SO kirk how much luminite per say 5 gallon bucket? I found some here in town at eagle building supply here in Fresno Ca, they have just about every product you use there in the vids.
Thanks
Howdy vinivv, most of the products I use can be found at any stucco, lath and plastering warehouse. I usually add 2 cups for a full bucket after a month I double that amount as the material is like food and spoils once it’s opened. Two months you need to add more than that and so on. Luminite even in a sealed bucket will go bad.
Have a groovy day!

Hey Kirk your videos are very helpful thanks. Can I use in your opinion lumnite with inground basketball systems that are anchored in concrete? once I play with the ratio a little. Again in your opinion. Thanks
Hey Kirk where can I get my hands on luminite?. I live in New York. Thanks.
Hi Anthony, try the nearest stucco and or plastering material yard.
Unfortunately, I wouldn’t recommend to purchasing Luminite online.

Howdy Chris, I too had 14 men at one time and a 60,000 dollars plaster pump.
We completed custom projects that made covers of magazine’s and one that was in a motion picture.
(not much glory of any of these accomplishment in the long run)
I'm fortunately past the age of worrying about what folks think of my style.
But truly wish you well with your business as I’ve been there before myself.

I want to skim coat over an existing stucco wall and add some texture to it.
Can I mix up a bag of cement and do this instead of stucco?
Evening okrabay , I don't know if you could, I can, but I have lots of practice. If you are a serious craftsman with your tools yes you can. If your not it would be wiser to buy a bag of cementitious color coat material and spread this, it's much easier. LaHabra, Western or Omega will do for the most common name brands.
Best wishes,

Hello Kirk, using accelerators makes it 2 coats? No separate scratch and brown? Thanks
+Mike G, adding accelerators does take some time in, instead of paying 50 dollars for a bag that you just need a handful, I would recommend you or anyone watching apply a scratch coat, allow to set then apply your browncoat. cheers, Kirk giordanno
+Kirk & Jason Giordano's plastering & stucco tips Will do, thanks Kirk and thank you for the response on the other video.
