Brown coat comes from wattle and daub, british terminology.
Before the final coating, which is normally mostly lime, there is a brown coat which has more sand than the final coating hence the term brown.
Good info, thanks!
Do you ever use acrylic or do you stick to using the bags
Howdy Cerveza, I use whatever the client wants as a rule.
Or when matching finishes if it an stucco acrylic finish, we match using an acrylic finish, we have two videos coming soon, that show acrylic patchwork in great detail.

I want to know how to get the stucco to stick to foam. It tends to slide so much, instead of sticking. Like dryvit foam, moldings, or trim. Can u give me tips or a video pointing to it?? Thanks! Great job!
Howdy Mike, no worries, FYI, stucco won't adhere to foam. Unless it's precoated with a cementitious finish.
You can aslo apply a bonding agent to the foam or coat the foam with a cementitious adhesive specifically designed to adhere foam molds to base coats such as La Habra's Poly-Bond, which you can only purchase at plastering materials yards such as Westside building materials.
I'm assuming you have raw foam?
If you did buy raw foam, don't do that anymore as it coat a few pennies more to have your foam fiberglass meshed and pre coated.

Howdy Stan and Sarah, wow, humidity so strong you feel like your slowly drowning, spoken like the language of my favorite aurthur, Jack London, he had a way of explaining sights that put a vision in one's mind.
I like heat at about 85 to 90, with no winters, humidity?
Don't care for that stuff much, plus my wife hates it she says it makes her hairs curl, I say it's a good way to flush out toxins, but other than that, who needs it.

Kirk, can you put a link to the red tape you use to mask off windows and doors etc?

Howdy guys, thanks for bringing this to my attention, I have never paid more than 15 bucks for a roll of 2-inch red vinyl tape, Echo red tape goes for about 12 to 14 a roll but I can't find it on Amazon, the link below shows Shurtape for about 8 bucks, it's also one of my favorites.
https://amzn.to/2KI5vjq
I click on the above link mentioned by Ken and was shocked to see tape selling for close to 30 dollars a roll, "mind-boggling expensive" I did not intentionally place that one on as a recommendation, I will call my guy and tell him to remove it and place the link for the Shurtape instead.
best wishes,
kirk Giordano plastering
I asked as I wanted to know which tape as it must be durable and not damage surface or leave residue or you wouldn’t be using it. When i saw that crazy price In the link I was wondering how expensive your prep costs had to be based on that. Thanks for the other brand name.
Howdy Clint, no worries my brother, we prefer to use the good stuff but was not aware that any tape sold for 30 bucks a roll, I've never paid that much and would feel sort of stupid, referring tape so expensive, especially to our subscribers.

Kirk Giordano will never be your dad and teach you how to be a hot shot at plastering.
I hate my life and I hate my dad for leaving my mother to bring me up on her own. He knew she was a bad person, that's why they got a divorce. What made him think she would be any good as a single parent?
Not a day goes by where I don't suffer because of their poor parenting, but they will never understand this because their parents came from a generation that didn't get divorced at the first sign of trouble.
It's no use trying to confront them about what they did, they refuse to acknowledge how their selfishness has been severely detrimental to me.
Easy big guns, no one is at fault,
do yourself the biggest favor you will ever for yourself, listen to the at least first 10 minutes to Napoleon Hill who wrote his book more than 100 years ago and still a best seller in every country in the world, "yearly" for a good reason, you see, most of us have been to the edge.

Listen as needed, could be twice a day on once monthly as our minds need training too, including mine.

Hey Kirk I have a question for you. I'm here in Dallas Texas. And I own a window replacement company. Retrofit. I have a customer here that wants me to replace some windows surrounded by stucco. The windows are flush evenly with the stucco with no trim on the edge. Just level with the stucco. When taking the window out and when I collapse the frame will the stucco break down?? Do all stucco siding window replacement jobs need a framer and a stucco guy to properly do it?? House was built in the 1980 and has rotten wood around some of the windows. So I'm scared that it's going to break all the stucco when we take the window out.
Kirk Giordano plastering Inc. so the only way to properly do it is for us to chip off 3 to 4 inches of stucco around the window?? And they have someone re stucco it?? There no way to cut the edges of the window and tightly fit it in the opening??
Howdy Dominican Dude, if you try and cut to fit, you will have to trust me on this, They will leak, you will get a call within 1 to 7 years by an angry customer.
Could have wet sheetrock, installation, moldy carpets, etc., honesty is the best policy.
Heres what I woud suggest for you as you seam to be an experience window installer and not a plasterer.
Simply tell the folks beforehand you just install windows, they will have to hire a stucco guy to tie in and finish properly.
This way no stress on either of you, you then can use a skill saw adjust the blade to 1 inch cut at least 6 inches around the perimeter to install your windows and leave the stucco repairs to an expert.

Teaching do’s and don’t of plastering and stucco work
Kirk Giordano plastering Inc. will I need a framer as well?? Or just a stucco guy?? So realistically my window need to be flanged as well correct. Treat it like a new construction window. And yes that is the last thing I need is a leak problem.
Howdy Dominican Dude, if you're changing the headers and don't know how to yourself, yes you would need a carpenter.
If you're just installing the new window in the same hole, you just need a stucco guy.
Live long and plaster
Teaching do’s and don’t of plastering and stucco work
Howdy Dominican, yes you have to buy a window with a flange, that's pretty much all you will find anyway.

So …Do u green float the brown coat after u hard float it ?
Howdy John, If I use the hard rubber float to compress and straighten and it matches whatever finish I'm going after, no need to use a green sponge float.
As a rule, when a green float is used it brings the sand to the surface giving a repair such as this a sandy finish.
Of course, there also the possibility that if I do use a hard rubber float, I can still use the green float with very little water to soften all the joints to feather into existing finishes better.
Not all the time this is necessary, that's the choice of an individual plasterer.

Kirk and Jason Giordano’s sound plastering advice
Kirk Giordano plastering Inc. I have a question. a stucco 1969 home. I cut the plaster with a power saw, to install upgraded windows, I cut right through chicken wire and paper. any solutions for me to stucco the 2 inch gap around windows?
@BrianOnTheGo Howdy, sure I have a tip, now chip back the stucco 3 inches with a Bousch bulldog, this allows the membrane to stay intact instead of using a hammer which will push the stucco through the membrane causing the membrane to fail.
May all be blessed with peace, love with harmony.

@Kirk Giordano plastering Inc. thank you. I did this many years ago..really messed up good.
maybe because when you go take a shit its number two, and this is the 2nd coat so its a brown coat
Evening WW dude, exzackory Peace, love, and happiness to all Sound advice from the plastering messengers of youtube
Google took me to a page that stated that the name, brown coat, comes from it being a mix of sand and cement. Surely, that would be grey coat today, but the materials were probably different way back then. In the UK, the first coat is called the scratch coat and the second one is the float coat, because you scratch up the first one and use a float on the second one. That said, I have also heard people call the first coat the cracking coat, because it cracks, especially with lime render.
Evening John, I have heard similar things, especially about the color as often dirt was used. Peace, love, and happiness to all Sound advice from the plastering messengers of youtube
