Howdy folks, For the past week, we had the pleasure of working on this custom shower/ steam room with (Cy, the owner of E Co stucco) as well as the homeowners and Michael, the contractor that designed and built this one of a kind bathroom. You will meet Michael at the end of the video. Michael is a talented general contractor. (And an absolute pleasure to work with).
Please note: methods of the material may have changed since the time this was taken. Depending on whom you talk to or what Google says online, many different prep work methods can vary from when we did this video.
Jason and I show you step-by-step mixing or applying this Eco stucco LIME system. We also recommend that you follow all the instructions on each bag as this was our first time using this product. (Although I have applied many other lime products) Again, please read all the instructions yourself, so there’s no guesswork no matter what plaster material you are using.
At the start of this project, Cy recommends a coat of Poly bond to embed the fiber mesh tape on all seams of the Wonder Board. (Under the tape as well as over it) after our coat of Poly Bond was cured, we returned the next day to apply the thin-set Mortar! Although he does not sell the poly bond or the thin-set, CY recommends this.
I have witnessed many folks applying these base coats in different orders and some not using either.
I recommend a person research and decide for themself what prep work they wish on whatever backing they use, as old Kirk is an applicator, not an engineer.
Finally, we were ready for the lime plaster finish system.
Jason mixed, and I applied a base coat of DECOLIME plaster.
(It really helps to have an expert at mixing who takes the time out to read and understand each product.)
After the DECOLIME set, we returned and hand-applied the last 2 final coats Of MURALIME.
After the 2 coats of MURALIME had a chance to set, I used a hard plastic trowel to buff, polish, and create some highlands. Lastly, we applied the Natural black soap sealer over the entire lime plaster finish.
If you wish to understand the technical stuff of why it’s resistant to mold & mildew or why it’s nontoxic and ecologically friendly, please go to Cy’s websites below. He also has a typical warehouse/showroom in San Rafael for you to view at least 20 different walls with all sorts of lime finishes with different textures ranging from very smooth with a look of marble to a bit rougher.
You can, of course, purchase all the materials necessary for all his Lime products (even the tools), plus see colors for help in decision making.

Correctly applied lime plaster creates a natural air condition system in your bathroom, kitchen, and, in my case, attic bedroom.
The lime can absorb all moisture and release it when dryer conditions, hydration, and dehydration occur.
Natural Lime plastering prevents mold and fungi from occurring as its alkaline.
Lime is a necessary mineral.
Limes positively affect the human body that can’t be expressed or measured.
Lime plaster absorbs many airborne toxins, which is good for human health.
This may sound contradictory, but after over 30 years of using every plaster known to man.
I, unfortunately, don’t recommend any lime finishes for showered even with excellent exhaust systems.
I only recommend tile work in showers for too many reasons to list here.
In the rest of your home, this finish is not only beautiful but healthy.
Next, kick back, relax, and enjoy the video! 🍿

i'd really like to make a shower like this … I've never heard of a stucco shower, How do you compare a stucco shower with a tile shower? It looks really nice.
On anything technical about Eco stucco, please visit their website, unfortunately this site won’t allow me to place the site on it. (bummer) But type in Eco stucco in Google and that should point you in the right direction.
I am an applicator and don’t wish to give any bogus information about this new Lime Plaster system. I let the engineer’s answer that technical stuff.

Hey Bud, It's simply owner preference on what you wish to place on your walls. This was a cool project just to frame in. if you wish I can get you the General contractor’s name who built it? He also did the kitchen in this same house. He's a nice and competent guy, plus he works all over the bay area.
Thanks and have a great day!

Hey homebrew, Thank you. We did do allot of separate trips for this small bathroom project.
And your right Jason did spend more time with this one than any that he's filmed in the past. But fortunately we both enjoyed this project.
Have a great day!

THANK YOU for posting this video! I've been remodeling the bathroom in my 50's-era house over the last year or so (I'm not married so I can take my time lol) and I was wondering how I'd replaster the walls over the concrete board I used. This answered my questions. Anyhow, I've spent hours watching your other videos. I also built a patio with archways on the back of my house and am currently in the process of stuccoing it. So far so good! Thanks again!

Evening katenda100, sorry, but all technical questions should be directed to the owner Cy at eco stucco.

Best wishes and have a Fantastic New Year, Kirk Giordano’s DIY plastering tips
kirk your videos have been a big help with this eco stucco project. Always good to know what your getting into when using a new product. Thanks for taken the time to reply. The decolime went on easily over the meshed thinset covering any imperfections and now ready for the muralime will start with the color tomorrow. So far so good ! Thanks
Hello katenda100, nice to here things are working out with you.
I take it you were able to contact the owner who works with engineers to perfect this product.
I can answer most question in regards to what I apply on video, however companies such as Eco Stucco are always learning and adapting new technologies as are other plastering and or stucco companies.
My advice today would have been of my past application experiences, I don't wish to give incorrect or out of date advice, and get yelled at later.
Cheers, and have a Fantastic New Year!
Kirk Giordano’s DIY plastering tips
just from the information on the bag of decolime said could be applied after one coat thinset with mesh. The cement board had been installed so I doubled meshed joints and then embeder the whole boards with a 3ft roll mesh in polybond thinset mortar. was a little different from your video as you had a white thinset over your poloybond whereas I went directly over the black thin set with the decolime so that's what got me alittle worried that I was missing a coat . But according to back of the bag and specs I was able to find online think it should be good.
Hello katenda100, sounds like you're having fun.
best wishes,
kirk giordano plastering
hi kirk, so the following day after running color the walls dried out with like spider web cracks looks great apart from these spider web cracks, plaster isn't boast but def cracks have appeared. manufacturer said either was put on to heavy or the temperature was to cold. so not accepted by client and walls will have to be re run.i don't believe I put it on heavy and walls were really cold. have you ever experienced this? I watched your other video where you run a different color over existing color just had few questions – walls have already been sealed with meta crème will that be a problem, whats the best primer and should I use mesh again.i did notice one crack different from rest looks like along joint even tho it had been triple meshed – thanks for your time
Hi Katenda, It's a difficult product to apply properly, as all the underlayments have to be performed stronger than recommended much stronger.
The slightest movement in the structure of the house will add to problems, guess what? All house's move and shift especially when it rains for weeks on end this rain lifts the home and when it starts to dry out or settle the same movement again happens.
We can't see this action taking place but this super fine pretty lime plaster does not like any movement at all. This settling effect does not have any effect on sheetrock and taping mud in my humble opinion.
I don't apply this lime plaster any more as there are to many variables that are out of a professional applicators hands.
As far as checking, with exterior fine stucco that are really similar we lay the first coat down, it's real important to allow to cure then apply the second.
If the first is not set the second can lift it a hair and plus disturb the set and hairline or chattering occurs.
I'll admit I won't even try to apply this any more unless the whole structure it fortified like a bomb shelter.
Sorry, and best wishes.

Kirk, I just found a really interesting lime putty product in the UK, which has sand already mixed in, and it's cheap and comes in colours too; "Regency Lime Plaster". I will probably use it in our cottage.
Hello Matal dude, I don't recommend any lime plaster directly in the shower as all will grow mold spores, but in the bathroom on the walls or anywhere else is groovy,

Yeah I've seen that before and it looks interesting, I'd like to use it some time.
Hi Kirk what is poly bond I cant find it. Is it a thinset? What is the manufacture name.
Hello, poly bond is sold only at professional plastering or rendering yards,
Try a different product such as a tile setter which has bonding agents instead.

Hello Kirk.
Have you ever had any issues with Eco Stuco spider cracking in a shower setting? I'm a plaster contractor who is also based in the San Francisco Bay Area. The company I work for plastered a shower with Eco Stucco and had horrible spider cracking after the job was done.
What brand or type of shirts do ya'll wear? I would like to get some for wearing outside working on the farm. I really enjoy ya'lls videos. I am going to plaster some areas in a house on the water. Thanks for the info. You guys are pros!

Kirk, just discovered your channel and I really enjoy it. I want to turn a corner of my basement into a shower, it has painted cinder block walls, would you recommend this product or would cement plaster work? I want it to be smooth, thanks.
Good morning Scott, hate to say this, but I recommend tile for most shower areas, FYI this lime system requires maintenance, such as applying a black soap to help prevent moisture from penetrating, this is super pretty and cool looking but maintenance is required.
Now for any other walls in the home that are not in an actual shower, this system is great.
In fact after 30 years and applying every plaster and acrylic finish made in shower areas, I still recommend tile, as the grout joints may still mold but at least the entire walls won't.
FYI, if you have a really good exhaust system this helps with any system including tile.
Live long and plaster,
kirk giordano
Can this process be done over existing tile?
if u use a adhesive basecoat over the tile u can but it looks like the tile would perform better in a shower.
good work

He didn t mention that tadalkt is a morrocan tradation, using plaster lime ( called in moroccan gobsse) ,mixing it with savon beldi( black soap), wich is a moroccan tradition made of the olive oil and fatty acid.
Tadalkt,is a morocan name ,mean work into past with hand, bcse, many many yers ago,to know, to mixt every thing for TADALAKT, the masters used only their hand, no machine.
So, the reason, they use savon beldi ( black soap), in tadalkt, is bcse, when mixing it with witl lime plaster, a chemical reaction, occurs, between fatty acid from the black soap wich came from the lack olive, with the lime from plaster.
This chemical reaction prouduce, a thin film made of Lime soap(calcium).
This calcium soap is insolible in the water( water resistance).
This is the reason why Tadalkt is used for bathrom with shower.
Bcse of this, tadalkt help to prevent the mold, stain from water, any thing that combine with water to prouduce a product that cause, bacteria, mold, stain, around tadalkt in ur shower.
On the top of this result, tadalkt, give a wonderful impression to the eye.
The way the morrocan, made tadalkt, by hand, is very intense work, but the finished prouduct is beautufull,.
Howdy Simo Anejarn dude, correctamundo, you are right.

Kirk, I want to make a ecco stucco (tadelakt) shower. I have Durock cement boards as substrate, I have a redgard ( water resistant membrane) from what Ive read you can apply a dry mix fortified thinset mortar over the membrane. Imbedding a fiberglass mesh into the membrane over the cracks. My question is… What products would you recommend over the regard and then what tadelakt/stucco mixture? Can I apply Tradelakt from store.eccostucco.com over a fortified thinset morter or straight over the membrane ? Or would I need a polybond or versabond material ?
Evening Brittany Dean, both Eco, and Tadelake are so similar in colored lime, I can't tell the difference.

What are your thoughts on the finishing trowel. I am going to be applying a white tadelakt finish on a bathroom. The supplier had ran out of the white pavan finish trowel I did find the red finishing trowel still made by pavan. Do you think the red trowel will streak the white finish?
Evening Skopetake Dude, personally I was told something similar, I can use any trowel handy and get the same effect.
Carbon or stainless, anyone familiar with tools can apply.

Good morning- Thank you for all the inspiration.
I am hoping to apply a lime plaster finish to the top half of my shower. There is a Shluter membrane I will need to attach the plaster directly to. Can you recommend the flex bond or versa bond for this first coat? Im assuming the dry time might be a bit longer if used? Or is there another thinset you might recommend to to act as a binding layer. Shluter most often recommends a non modified thinset for application and setting tile as the dry time is an issue when speed is necessary. Thank you

Kirk. I’m about to build a hood range plenum I want to finish with lime plaster. Any suggestions on how I’d build up a plywood substrate to get a thin lightweight and durable plaster finish?
Lime is not as eco friendly as people think. Simply because firing limestone requires CO2 to create it. If we could find a chemical assay that creates lime and captures the released co2
