There are many different brands of joint compounds, here are 3 types.
1. All purpose: Used for taping and texture. Can be used for coating, but shrinks more and sands harder.
2. Topping: Used for 1st and 2nd coats. It Shrinks less and sands much easier than all purpose.
3. Quick set or accelerated (Hot Mud): This comes in bags. It’s powder that you mix with water. Ranges in drying time from 5 minutes to 210 minutes. Be careful, once it starts setting up, there’s no stopping it, and it is very hard to sand.
Mud comes in pales, bags, buckets and boxes.
Before we applied the 20 minute mud to the walls I applied a portland based skim coat over the area that buckled loose.
I also could have used structo-lite and waited a day before the 20 minute mud to be applied
this video explains how we repair plaster on a few different areas throughout the home.

Kirk Giordano plastering Inc. How do you mix it? 5 gallon bucket and and a spinning tool on a drill ?
The hot mud
Oh ok so do you have to sand it then? I thought you were using a diamond veneer or a unical?
Hey Bud, No we didn't have to sand it, but we worked extra hard not to.
I don't apply any finishes where sanding is necessary. Takes a heck of allot of extra time, but we do save it back from no sanding. Lots of elbow grease!
I applied this hot mud as if I were using diamond, 2 coats.

Hello Kirk! Is that drywall mud?
Hi Graficdav. You’re welcome. Allot of old homes are not true and plumb. Especially if the walls have plaster on them. You mostly can't tell unless you put a straightedge to the wall. Then again this matters little unless you can notice it big time, then it's time to fix it.
Best wishes and have a great day!

Howdy slukerdvd, I do sometimes use 45 or 90 depending on the size of the wall. Usually I like 20 minute mud because I like hustling. The 45, 60, 90 let alone the 120 minute plaster mud's, I don’t have the patience for it.
Best wishes and have a groovy evening.

i use a square trowel for drywall, that swimming pool trowel looks more comfortable, thank you for sharing your expertise.
Morning Xorxe Villalobos, your welcome, I usually tell folks use what ever trowel they prefer, I am partial to the swimming pool trowels especially the ones that are sort of round but the tip of the radius is straight, in other words not a full radius.
best wishes,

so when you say "cement" this is portland cement which you are mixing with sand or just plain portland cement with NO sand ? then the bonding agent .. then the joint compound / stucco / "mud" ?
Evening jesseimagemaker, I used a portland cement plaster for the patchwork, we added sand, water plus an accelerator, on the same day we applied the 20 minute mud over the walls.
There are lot of ways and materials that will achieve similar or even stronger results such as veneer plasters also.

you're saying you're working on old wood lathe, yet you're using CEMENT in your render mix????? This will damage any old building wall system
