Interior Ceiling Plastering, How to apply interior plaster, Smooth Steel Troweling Plastering
Howdy, guys and gals, this video explains applying a plaster finish to a living and dining room ceiling.
I call what we are doing plastering. However, technically we are using a drywall compound.
I do have other videos where we are using veneer plasters also.
It’s a lot faster than 3 coats of taping mud without any sanding.

Thank you all for watching, and wishing all a great day!
@MrTerr12 Thank You, most of the interior stuff we do is a finished product. A person will generally sand taping mud but the plasters usually don't need sanding. However if there are some imperfections you can add more or sand if you wish.
Have a groovy day!

Hey joybrook, sorry for the delayed response but just found your question. You are more than likely completed with your project. And probably learned you can start wherever you wish. Vault ceiling’s take some real talent. I have done quite a few myself, the corners are the tough part.
Have a groovy day!

americans!!!!!! lmfao
Hey turmalingua, no need to start flexing. I'll watch your first video. “I promise” But still the fact remains, if you apply plaster not taping mud you don't have to sand, providing you leave it smooth which definitely takes some time in. Tapping mud you do usually have to sand.
Chill out and have a groovy day!

Hola turmalingua, you still flexing? I have been in this plastering business for about 30 years but if I do see it slipping away you can have the responsibility of taking on the new work. (Trust me bro these no glory in it) except peace of mind for a job well done.
Best wishes, chill and have a groovy day!

Hey Kirk, you rock dude! Thanks for all of the great work. The glory is in a job well done and pride not arrogance. One question I have is wether this is simply dura bond 90 minute gypsum or something else. Do you ever do any lime plaster work?
Hi Tim, I believe I used 20 minute plaster mud on this ceiling. I buy it in bags and mix on the job with just water. And yes I have had my share of lime plaster, I like the eco stucco the best. Type in how to apply eco stucco to see more.
Best wishes, and have a good evening.

very professional workmanship from whats i've seen in my research to repair water damage to a plaster ceiling . I'll have someone in the trade come put a finish on for me but i'm going to attempt to patch the 3×4 foot hole myself to save a few bucks ! Thanks for the insight into what it takes to put a damaged plaster wall back into shape the right way !
Hey Thomas, use fast patch or 20 minute mud for a small patch. Remember if the bucket or the drill paddle is the slightest bit dirty the 20 minute plaster will set in less than five minutes. Best wishes, I'm sure, You Can Do It!
Have a groovy evening

Hey Kirk.. Nick again… When you say 20 minute mud, do you mean Dura-Bond 20 or is it another product? You said it could be sanded so I'm assuming it's Dura-Bond E-Z Sand 20. We still use lime and guaging on jobs like this, but I've always wanted to try using Dura-Bond but my boss won't go for it. I figure the Dura-Bond would trowel like lime as it gradually set, but, unlike guaged lime, could be sanded in spots if need be. Let me know… Thanks bro.
Good morning Nick, I usually use Westpac compounds from Westside building materials as it’s my plaster yard for the rest of my materials.
I believe Dura-bond is very similar.
It’s mainly a drywall compound but does the jobs nicely.
The veneers can’t be sanded and I prefer using them on kitchens or bathrooms. (Imperials and the diamond brands especially.)
Thanks for watching and have a great day!

Nice finish Kirk – can you do a video on how you might do a rolled internal corner? I offer this sometimes when plasterboard ceiling is laid over old joists which are mis-aligned making a straight internal ceiling / wall line impossible. This happens a lot under pitched roofs. Cheers.
HI wingaard, I have done at least 30 entier rooms with coved ceilings.
Last one I did was about 4 years ago before we started video.
The pool trowel I use mostly today Is the same one I used for these coved ceiling.
Next chance I get I'll get it on video.
Best wishes,
kirk and family
I am BETTER
Morning руслан шумаря, I like your attitude.
In fact I wish you were on my crew.
No doubt, you are better, but maybe not smarter, If you tell everyone how good you are and you're working with a big crew, guess what? every tough job that comes along the boss say's "dude your my best guy, go handle it" been there done that, only to discover there's little glory, but much hard work which I used to enjoy.
best wishes,

Very much enjoyed your video. I have done "repairs" to plaster ceilings and walls, very little new work or total redos. Insurance restoration is where I wet my feet and had some training. Your right about the time and, yes it is hard. I get laugh from the responses that you received. I have been doing it for forty years now and guess what i don't know it all so I look on the internet for tips- thank God for Youtube. Thanks for your great videos and I appreciate the hard work.
Howdy Peter Zbasnik, thank you,
I too look towards YouTube but for natural eating and health conditions.
Cheers!

Hey brother – you're a good man – showin' us these old-school techniques that are becoming a lost art. Very interesting you brought that ceiling to a pre-paint condition without sanding. Thank you.
Hi dbez, no worries, nothing worse than sanding,
Best wishes,

Thank you for the awesome videos Kirk! I finally have started skim coating our kitchen and dining rooms. I'm using 45 minute EZ sand mud. Two questions, 1) Why am I getting small air bubbles in the finish? 2) I think I waited too long to steel trowel the topcoat…it was crumbling as I pulled it across. Is it supposed to still be a little damp when you do that? I couldn't get any fat off it other than damp crumbles. Gonna do a third thin coat.
Hi thull1234, thank you, bubbling mean you are use to much pressure, this loosens the grip from the plaster from the wall,
also keeps your tools wet as dry tools also drag the top coats away as the gypsum has a tendency to stick to the trowel.
There is no need for a third coat, simply allow your two coats to dry and mix some mud and go over any imperfections or what we call holidays,
most of these compounds have no sand ofr just fine 30/30 sand so they should blend in easily.
You can even use taping mud or spackling as these gypsums don't have any sand.

This video was extremely helpful. Hired a crew to take out the popcorn (acoustic) ceiling and after knocking it down the crew had to leave for unexplained reasons. I still have not received the $800 dollars they admitted to oweing me and decided to not wait for their return. After watching these videos and putting it to work I've been able to complete the job myself. It looks good enough to the realestate agent to sell my home.
Thank you for the video!
Howdy Mondo, thank you

What kind a mud ???????
Evening Jerry, veneer plaster, it's a mixture of gypsum and crushed limestone. Cheers, peace, harmony & happy holidays Sound Plastering tips from your favorite stucco geeks
Veneers can be sanded.
USG diamond veneer plaster and USG imperial veneer plaster, both can be sanded.
The Usg basecoat a.k.a plaster basecoat can be grounded. Or scrapped.
Maybe i should say polish for the veneer plaster finish coat.
Evening Jerry dude, perhaps with a stone, never tried too.
