Great video ! tarps work great also , they grip well.
Howdy Danny Dude, no doubt, we got to this home to do something other than this, I thought when asked to skim it, man, I didn't bring my boots as we were set to do groundwork nor my cloth tarps, the life and times of a small-time stucco dude.
Like every job we have ever taken, we made it work, anyway.

tarps suck, they are slippery & splash factors. use old carpets!
Old carpet for life
centaro24 Those work as well! When he says tarps he means a canvas drop cloth, not the plasticy blue tarps. The cloth ones we use do not slip.
Thank you Kirk, I’m a chimney sweep, mason,30 yrs, I’ve learned from you.
We use to call sliding down roofs magic carpet ride
Howdy Stan dude that sounds too funny, but I'd hate to be the slidder dude.

I once got up on my 4 story victorian house (through the skylight) to work on pointing a chimney looked down saw the slant and how easily one slip could have killed me and got off of there quick smart and called a professional.
Howdy Mohammed Dude, funny, 30 years ago I carried a jacuzzi bath tube up through my skylight on my two-story home, twice as steep as this roof in this video, we did it with ease back then but I was 30 years younger.

Can one go about putting a scratch coat over existing stucco? We want the scratch for stone veneer work.
Howdy Chris, you can, but you would have to apply a bonding agent first then apply the cement plaster coat.

So how do you make the scoops for stucco?
I'll be making a video on that soon! But, as easy as they are to make you are usually better off ordering one like the one we use. Making your own is really a last resort these days but we have had to do it many times!
sorry man for having that much experience your horrible at throwing finish on a wall…..im not buying your experience kirk…not at all man ….who uses a hawk anymore..just a metal scoop and a trowel..sorry man im just embarrassed for you…
come on lets not be amateurs here…Your soppose to use the indusrial thick brown kraft paper…they sell it at stucco supply depots…that stuff doesnt slip on shingle roofs…

Howdy Robert Dude, Contraire mon frère, that 60-minute moisture barrier "Jumbo Tex" is for waterproofing plywood walls, however, there was indeed this paper just 8 inches around this chimney, any more I would have stepped on and slid down this roof with the paper.
FYI, this black paper, it's just as slippery as snot on a doorknob.

What amazes me is that the higher the level of specialty in the in-demand trades, often times the higher of level of arrogance and some kind of secrecy feeling that you see around.
Not in the case of Kirk G., where he always explains the steps down to the very basics and throws some "secrets of the trade" without hesitation. We only need to get ourselves to do it and eventually we will master the techniques. After a few small jobs i can handle that pool trowel with ease and confidence. Same as of getting to know our cements, to figure out the point of perfect mix, drying time, etc. I do door and window installation and commonly i used to sub the stucco patch job that sometimes is needed. No more. I do my own, and even started to get some other bigger stucco jobs, matching ups, etc. And all what i know i got it from this site. Great knowledge here.
Howdy Ronald Dude, atta boy and thank you
you'll be making these video's soon telling your learned tips.

Always impressed with how you apply the materials Kirk. It's like watching Bob Ross paint. On a total side note, I have a video request for a gag. Could you do a short April fool's video special with you using a shoe to apply stucco like you joke about in other videos? Maybe under a premise of improvising cause Jay or Louuuuuuu forgot to load the trowels on the truck that morning, lol. Just a thought for a funny clip. I wonder if it would catch people off guard.
Evening Will dude, i like that idea, Ill bring me dear old grandma's fring pan too as I can spread with anything.

Hi just subscribed to you're channel need advice on how to best render a swimming pool what is the best way to go about it and the best render mix for it would really appriciate your input cheers I live in Manchester England
Howdy Frank from Manchester, my wife, is also from Manchester as in Summerseat, a small village or used to be.

Kirk Giordano plastering Inc. No problem can do the rendering and k rend just never done a pool so not sure of the best products for the job so many different ways to do it for the best finish but so many people saying no do it this way then do it that way get me was hoping you had the answer because you're the dog's bollocks at what you do never mind thanks for the reply take it easy and keep the videos coming
Evening Frank, I would suggest you call at least 5 swimming pool companies and ask this question, set aside at least an hour for this research, leave a messages if necessary, I believe at least 2 will explain what cement plaster they prefer the other 3 will be too busy or simply not wish to help out a brother.

Howdy Derek Dude, sure there are many more tools that are lower in cost than the one shown on that link, keep typing in keywords such as
lowest costing mixing drill and one will come up.

Kirk. At the end. Didnt say. See you till the next video. That means. His son taking over. Thats good. His videos are. Legit.
Evening Again Jose dude, Jason does indeed do a lot of his own work, when he works with me or I work on his projects, we make a great team as we both know what we are doing, as far as filming, this is a two-man operation, setting up a tripod to film what a person does, misses too much detail.

Plastering tips and techniques
Hey kirk so you can color coat sand finish over. A texture home like that ?? Dont you need a base coat. Or the 16/20 has enough sand to cov we that up
Evening Jose Dude, excellent question, yes I could have added color to this coat, but they had a unique color that was painted on the walls that they wanted on the chimney as well.
The existing cement was a base coat, Jason had already applied "Weld Create a bonding agent" over the painted chimney so when I got up there, all I had to do was apply this finish coat.

Plastering tips and techniques
This last question kirk can you vaneer plaster on drywall. ? Or do you have to put mesh first on all the joints. or can you just vaneer base coat plaster over it. then apply the veneer finish. Let me know
Howdy Jose dude, use your mesh on all seams, you can first fill all the joints then imeadiatly skim coat the base on, after this sets you can now apply the finish coat.
The base coat will usually set in 20 to 45 minute regardless of thinkness unlike taping mud which take many hour and even days.

Hello mr Kirk, love the informational videos. I have a new home that has traditional colored stucco with a smoother finish. It is cracking and the contractor wants to go acrylic now. Is that ok? Anything special to look out for?? Thank you sir
Howdy Poway, if you already have a smooth stucco finish an acrylic will be easy to apply over it. The acryic will flex much better than your traditional cementitious finish.
Plus by now all the settling is oveer.
FYI, with stucco the slightest movement and or vibrations causes hairline cracks, this does not affect the integrity of the waterproofing membrane, however, most folk panic as they have no clue why this happens it’s simply home movement, vibrations in stucco walls are sort like Kryptonite to Superman, not good.
you are past this stage.

Kirk. Can you tell US HOW MUCH 6 SACKS OF RIVER SIDE PLASTIC CEMENT COVER SQUARE FOOTAGE WISE ….WE WILL REALLY APPRECIATE IT ESPECIALLY COMING FROM SOMEBODY THAT BEEN IN THE TRADE and WORKED WITH OLD SAM. 30 YEARS AGO. THANKS WE WILL BE WAITING FOR RESPONCE
Howdy Jose dude, are you referring to Sam Hoft, who lived in Castro Valley? Sam was a lather than plastering contractor, he comes from a line of lathers and plasterers.
Let's see, 6, 94-pound bags of Riverside or any other cement plaster regardless of who makes it can scratch about 25 to 50 yards, this depends on the amount of sand added too, some folks might add 3 parts sand to one part cement plaster, or up to 5 parts sand to one part cement plaster.

Thank you for your wonderful, informative, fun videos,………please wear a safety harness when you are on a roof or ledge.
Howdy Copper dog, thanks for the love.
I did indeed wear a safety harness when we plastered a wall from a drop down scaffolding rig set 14 floors above the ground, that was set on the edge of the high rise we did in Oakland a few years back.
One long 30-foot plank. The first day we were too scared to plaster by the 3rd day we were having fun.

Kirk, don't let CalOSHA know your up there without fall protection, you know harness and lanyard etc. etc.
Howdy Steve, what I'm doing on this roof is not subject to a fine, fact is I have been three times as high and still it wouldn't warrant a fine, the real issue I had was wearing the wrong shoes, as they hit me with skimming this chimney by suprise, we were schedualed to work indoors this day.

How do you know when to use a bonding agent ?If I am smoothing out skip trowel to Santa Barbara do I need a bonding agent or do I just just wash the surface?
U guys are awesome. Thanks for great videos…
@Kirk Giordano plastering Inc. Thank you for great videos.. Say hello to jason..
Kirk, I see you DidN't use blue Larsens. You said it was old stucco, how come?
What is the product name of the finish product?
Hey Kirk, hope you are great! Theoretically speaking, how thick could you apply the finish coat after you have applied a bonding agent to a painted stucco? Would you dilute the bonding agent relative to the thickness? I won't hold you to anything, just want to know how you would do it!
Hi Kirk, just found your channel & you've got great videos! Subscribed! Do you have any more videos like this? Skip trowel finish on an older (50+) house with a new sand float finish? How do you prepare the old walls? Thanks!
