Another great pizza….I mean, plaster. Lol.
Good evening Daniel dude, Man, you won't believe this but after spreading for 6 hours straight roughly about half a ton of cement plaster, I can eat almost a whole pizza myself but settle for half, my son Jason the other half, O'ooo the joys of physical works, I love it.

Very informative video thank you. Stucco mix, portland cement, any particular kind?
Good Morning Armand dude, FYI, I used Omega's super cement plaster for this application as it has very mall fiberglass added, thus you cant see them, but the texture needed the extra stickiness to help the 1/2 dash adhere/stick, that video coming soon.
As a rule, I use Hanso Lehigh premium cement plaster, 3 parts sand to one part cement plaster which big Luuu adds by hand.
A mans got to know his cement plasters in this industry.

eventually will metal lathe Rust ? browncoat. Adobe clay. house finish is a brownish color .
Morning T Bok Dude, all stucco netting, and mesh wires are galvanized dipped to prevent rust, have I seen rusted mesh wire? many times, this could occur as when the mud is overworked it scraps some of the galvanization of the metal exposing the steel which then is prone to rust or the mesh is not galvanized, and or it can be old as the hills, I have seen a few times in material yards or some places stacks of hundreds of sheets for sale at 1/3 the price as certain yards. Although I've seen it, I would not purchase as the stucco can allow the rust to bleed through causing a color finish to look awful.
So the origin or the Browncoat is adobe clay finishes, sounds like ole T box is pulling my leg?

What if you get a hollow air space behind the mesh?
Good evening Frank dude, excellent question and good eyeI told the folks prior that they can add some spray foam to fill the void under, or build it out a different way where they could be no gaps, were only as good as what we have to work with.

wouldn't a hollow space behind the mesh be a good idea as it gives any moisture a way to escape? The air space also allows for air movement keeping the building dry.
Good afternoon Crazy Dude, yes there's a hollow spot, but the rainwater will not touch this are as it protected by two layers of paper.

Mastering Plastering for the beginner
I've watched this video a few times now but the reason you chose the diamond mesh over the standard wire still escapes me. Looks like you were just about to explain it but moved on. Could you clarify a bit more when to use diamond mesh? Reason I ask is because in my area, thats all be thats available outside the smaller gauge poultry netting. Love your videos by the way and very thankful for you putting this information out there for us!
Good evening Aaron dude, no problemo, and excellent question,
FYI, this wall had no solid backing, instead, it had furring strips that started at 1 inch at the top to 4 inches towards the bottom, these plywood 4 inch strips were then nailed in at the top and shims were used to bend out 4 inches to the bottom, as they could not bend plywood to form such as arch or radius, sort of like the bottom of a funnel, then we papered it, if one would put your hand between the wood strips you would find it hollow.
So if I were to use my typical 17 or 18 gauge stucco netting the stucco would have gone through the large holes and most would have fallen to the ground, however with this diamond mesh or what we call 3.4 met mesh, we were able to just apply the stucco without most of it falling through tas the holes as they are small this is the reason it's used primarily for soffits.

Stuccoing over wood lap siding? Would you recommend removal? 1700 sq ft ranch style home, and I realise this is asking the impossible but ball park me, what would you charge a customer to stucco it? Great work by the way. I've been admiring your work and videos since I started my addition and finishing my garage. Wish I could do what you do.
I think it is called the "brown coat" because sand was added to the second coat that gave the plaster a browner hue.
Good evening Daniel dude, if you mix sand with Lehigh's white cement plaster or Eisenwall hydraulic cement plaster will give a tan appearance as both are white cement and the sand brown, when mixed, voila, tan
however, all other cements are gray, when mixed with sand dark grey when applied and light gray when dry.
OK, just googled it and still can't find why the second coat is called a brown coat.

The most important part of any plastering with Lath is "embedment of the lath"….regardless of the style Lath. If you don't encapsulate it, the system may not perform in the wall as intended for rack/shear, wind loads, moisture penetration.

Kirk thanks for the great videos, can I ask is there a way to separate ceramic shower tile from a 1950's era wire and plaster wall so the tile can be replaced? I want to remove a section of tile for a plumbing repair and then be able tape and seal the joint between the cement plaster and a Hardibacker patch. When attempting to remove the tile from the plaster it come off in fragments leaving an unworkable surface.
Good evening Dude, all I can say is to use a flat putty knife and tap gently with a hammer if it shatters, such is life, just don't get it in your eye's.
Keep in mind that ceramic tile is glass-like and very fragile, wear goggles if you try and remove it as a fragment of this glasslike tile in your eye will definitely take the wind out of your sails.

Kirk,I just did a job using white cement and sand, but I wasn't sure about adding lime to the mix. What is your take on lime ?
Good evening Al dude, sounds like you were applying Handson's Lehigh white cement plaster which when mixed with sand becomes a tan color when set.
As a rule, I rarely add Lime to any of my cement plasters as that's apprentice stuff, with hands-on practice for you as a plasterer try to spread any material weather stiff, sandy or soupy, I prefer cement plaster like whipping cream.
Besides lime is already in most cement plaster's including Hanson's white cement plaster, I recommend that whichever cement plaster you choose to get into the habit of applying it as best you can, as you are an upcoming stucco professional, of course, if it's too sandy or stiff, I tell my guys to add more or less sand and or water, plastering is always compromising.

Kirk Giordano plastering Inc. Great,I just finished a stucco wall, with a white cement from a company called,Federal Cement. (East coast we get this). On a side note it is hard to find go supply or material companies here in Philly metro. White, fine sand is difficult to get locally too. I was kind of hesitant of the skip step finish ,as I have little experience . I returned to the job the next day and it looked better when it dried. Many thanx .Albert.
Good evening Al dude, when I first started, after 4 years of applying everything under the sun, I was transferred to a color coat texture crew to apply just textures, I told the foreman although I had many years in I had never applied the skip trowel finishes, he just laughed and said by the end of the day with your hands on experience I'd be fine.
He was right but I did sweat most of the day worrying, happens to the best of us.
Your courage is going to make you a hell of a great plastering contractor, soon you will be making the video's and I'll be on a beach sipping margaritas with my wife while side glancing at half-naked senorita's

Kirt, You indicated in the video that the 3.4 mesh is not code for wall in the San Francisco Bay Area. I am planning on plastering a curved stair case interior wall use diamond mesh and felt paper attached to the stud, then plastering over the mesh with Imperial basecoat and Diamond finish coat. Will this system as described above pass the SF Bay Area code, if not, why. Also, do you have a better suggestion for plastering a curved wall? Any advice is greatly appreciated! Tom
Howdy Tom, when I say, "it's not code," I just mean it's not necessary to use 3.4 metal lath on exteriors of homes when stucco netting is a better choice, and yes, your method for an interior well is correct.
FYI, you don't need a moisture barrier inside a home, "unless it's in a shower," nor is a lath inspection required for interior plastering.

Can we mix different gauges of wire for patching? For example, my home is built with the mesh, can I do repairs with 16 gauge wire?
Howdy Michael, the best for stucco is 17 or 18 gauge stucco netting, For example, 20 gauge is too thin, that being said I have seen chain link fence used more than once used for stucco. Live long and plaster Answers to life’s stucco and plastering questions
