Howdy guys and gals, this video explains a 2 coat plaster system. It also explains the lath on this project.
Proportions are clearly spelled out in ASTM C 926, Standard Specification for Portland Cement-Based Plaster. [www.astm.org] Scratch coats are mixed at 1 part cement to 2-1/4 to 4 parts sand, brown coats are mixed at 1 part cement to 3 to 5 parts sand, as a rule.

The sand in your mortar seems very coarse similar to the mortar in Victoria Australia. The sand in western Australia is very fine as you know Australia is the oldest continent in the world. You get very interesting jobs renovations which is more challenging than new work. Matching existing work even from times before you were born and you think how did they do this. Its good you have someone filming for you and contributing and sharing your experiences to the world. Keep up the good work.
Its interesting how your rendered to the wood frame was it wood?
@ron1martens Thanks Ron, I remember when I wasn’t sure how to match certain finishes. Now days I hope to find tough and unusual finishes as it adds to the challenge. About 20 years ago a contractor had an 8 by 8 patch that he tore off three times because the home owner would not accept it. It took me more than an hour before I realized the guy who did it was left handed. Knowing this I was able to match the finish. I almost passed on the job knowing no match no pay.

@ron1martens Hey Ron, I had to watch the video to remember, it was lathed by the home owner’s friend. He did apply new plywood and he used furring nails to attach it to the wood. It’s time consuming to fasten lath by hand.
Have a good evening.

How come you were able to apply the second coat in the same day, where as in other videos I've heard you mention to wait 48 hours to apply it. Great videos Kirk! Keep em comin'!
Hi Domenic Larosa, excellent question, there are traditional stucco systems where you applied a scratch coat, then waited at least 48 hours to apply the follow up coat or as we call it in the stucco business the brown coat.
For the last 30 years there are back to back systems that you can now apply both coats in a day and some materials that say you can even do a color finish too.
They all take practice. when I do small stuff I can save the customer some cash if I make one trip, the material cost 3 times as much as the regular cement plaster but it's a wash. I save time not making two trips, but pay 3 times the cost for material to make one, plus the same day coats are much stronger. so the customers are happy too.
best wishes,

Thanks for lesson learned!
Must be nice to have a son.. I could hire him to help me on my moving jobs and pay him well. When I was 19 I got a dog to prove I was reponsible to others. Timmy was my best friend and he became ill after drinking water from a puddle in the road after he was only 5 years. He bacame very expensive but taught me many lessons until his health became worsened at 13 years old I had him put to sleep. It was a somewhat of relief as I was spending so much on his special diet of chicken liver which was extending his life. Now I take care of my mom and home and need to do a repair where water comes in during heavy florida heat and rain has rotted the t111 siding in places. I usually try everything diy. I only have one stucco job under my belt from a long time ago when I lived in L.A…Now I'm turning 35 in July and my Iranian wife will hopefully be allowed to the U.S. soon so we can start a family and I can have a son. Never take having a family for granted. Kirk gave his son credit because he is a good man and master of his craft. Keep up the good work!
