Howdy all in this video, I’m poking fun at my pal for doing his own lath and over-stapling with a few other common mistakes. At least he tried.🤔
The question, should one turn the corner with stucco metal netting? NO:
In fact, I don’t like to turn the stucco netting as this rips the corner paper.
Instead, I go just to the corner and use a metal “corner aid” to attach/tie in both sides. This prevents ripping the paper at all vertical corners.😏
Many homes have leaked because the “Lathers” turned the corner with the stucco netting then had to pound the stucco netting flat with lathers hammers or l so that the corners would fit. Hence this action forced the stucco metal netting into the paper membrane, causing penetration leaks for the rainwater to enter these vertical corners.
In many homes, the corners eventually failed as moisture found its way into the broken paper on these corners.
Would the stucco or structure be stronger if the stucco did indeed go around without tearing/ripping/cutting/embedding itself in at the corners?
No doubt about it, sure it would. The choice is for the lather, A tiny bit of extra strength, Or corners that are leakproof?
My common sense says that question answers itself.🤔
Don't over staple the lath, only ever 6 inches on studs.
In just a couple of days, I’ll upload another video to show all interested as clearly as I know how to, and in easy details, that even me dear old great grad-pa can even understand, how to lath withing ten minutes.💃🕺🏻

The King SPEAKS!!!
Nice job, my friend. you are creative . We support you to learn from you. Thank you very much . Walid from Libya.
I adore his love of hard work even at this age. His manner of speech is like in old American westerns
@Kirk Giordano plastering Inc. you are welcome. When you wrote this, we had a deep night in Kazakhstan. your appearance reminds me of Johnny Ringo at Tombstone. … your advice has helped me a lot in recent years, I am very grateful to you for that.
Yes, you are still very young, you have to work and work.
The weekend warrior/d.i.y enthusiasts and your average joe will always overkill on a job.
Understandable because they dont have experience and think more fixings mean more better.
Running joke on my jobs now is the kirk says.
Kirk says you do this.
Kirk says when your doing this you do that.
Problem arises…..easy…..what does kirk say .
Great vid as per usual kirk
Lathers don't use claw hammers. I wouldn't recommend diy. You'll spend more having the sub fix your errors.
Considering all construction started with a sledge and claw hammer it would be difficult to dispute there were originally only six hammers used in almost every trade since time began. Exactly what do you think this used?
@Xavier Holland we use hatchets.
@Mr Big Licks I am going to press X to doubt.
Kirk , cheers from Central Florida.
It still blows my mind how different lathing is in our area compared to yours. We used expanded metal lath instead of "chicken wire". We do use the weep screeds and other accessories. How's Looouuu ?
Keep up the good work my friend.
Jason is a excellent camera guy.
Plaster on !!!
You said put the "J" mold under the Paper…I would put the "J" mold over the Paper. This will allow the "J" mold to hold the apllied masonry …Am I right..as apposed to under the paper.
Thanks, Love the videos ..
@Kirk Giordano plastering Inc. Ah Huh! Yes…thinking further into the Matrix of the stucco installation something that does get over looked many times over..to Protect from water penetration that's it! We here in Canada also have freeze thaw moments almost every day during winter months. If the stucco is in the sunny side of the building this where damage happens..many times..Salt on the side walks also creeps up the wall pulling moisture into the masonry, I use flashing over my installations at the base of projects..a discussion for another time.
Chow for now Kirk and Jason.
So good!
can you go over wire with wire if the first layer of wire is too flat ?
Your work looks awesome. Makes me wish I lived in California! Lol. By chance…. Do you know of anyone you would recommend in Miami, FL?
Kirk Giordano plastering Inc. Thank you very much for your response. We appreciate you taking the time. I will follow your advice, until you decide to move to Miami! Lol
Keep up the good work and great videos.!
Make him pull the staples out with his teeth Kirk. Lol then we can laugh when we see a pair of dentures attached to the lath. Ha ha . Happy plastering.
Master craftsman
Kirk when you got a short nail turn your hand backward, palm toward you. Place short roofing nail between fingers and start nail, then remove hand and drive nail forward. It might be easier for you and less dangerous.
kirk watched you for a long time ,love the comments you reply to, witch is nearly everyone ,not seen any smart arse beat you yet, a,t,b you, yours
Kirk, have you tried synthetic lath like Spyder Lath? How about rainscreen+lath products like Boral Drain-n-dry lath? https://drainndrylath.com/ Do you have any issues with synthetic lath? We are fairly close to the ocean so want to avoid rust issues.
@Kirk Giordano plastering Inc. Kirk, thanks.
Where's Louuuuuu. He needs a larger cameo.
The John Wayne of plaster.. the Duke of Plaster..
Hey Kirk. I was out your way this past weekend. My oldest daughter got married and she lives in San Mateo. Next time I am out I'll drop off some Stella.
I'm buying a house and the stucco finish is too smooth for my liking. Can you tell me how to fix that? Or direct me to one of your videos please
@Kirk Giordano plastering Inc. Thanks man! Your my go to channel for all plaster info.
Thanks to Kirk and his videos I did stucco repair that was great and I was able to sell my house for a huge amount over the market. Thank you again.
Thanks Kirk for answering my question…… great video
No problemo
No problemo
A master at his trade. Pay attention, people like this are vanishing breed.
@Kirk Giordano plastering Inc.
Thanks for the response.
As I said I really do enjoy your videos, unfortunately due to a couple of nagging injuries I'm not fully able to be as ambitious as I once was towards home repairs, etc. I just cannot do certain things anymore.
I have a some stucco repair that needs to be finished at my house here in San Jose. I see that you are based in the East Bay area, so if you would consider a short drive I would be thrilled to hire your company to wrap it up so I can get on with the things that I can do myself.
.
Please let me know and I can send you some photos to see what you think.
Thank you very much.
Ralph
I’m a Plaster Tender Aprentice for local 1414 in California . I appreciate the tip. Good to know these things . Keep them coming Kirk!
Great channel helping people.. My best friend of 40 years was a plasterer.. Regretfully lost him a two years ago.. Your style and hard work remind me of him… I can't ask him but I'll ask you.. I took out a french and replaced it with a slider.. The stucco is about 2" thick.. A very heavy finish coat… I'm going to do the patch myself.. The question is how thick can I lay the mud on the wire.. I have a 6" gap along the 6' top of the slider..Do I spread the mud the whole 2" at one time or is that too thick…I will use luminite… Thanks
@Kirk Giordano plastering Inc. Thank you… Means a lot to me…
I’m a lather and he messed up lol
I see you fixed it
Ummm…WARNING!!!
Customers can apply wire wrong as seen here…
You can advise…repair…adding on cost…correcting…
Yet Then…here is the WARNING…if there is any structural cracking…despite best efforts to resolve…cracks through finish…you leave yourself open for blame…not to mention I void all warranties…VOID ALL WARRANTIES
I never let the customer apply anything…NEVER…
You guys rock! Love the videos, love your work. Maybe do a Halloween special? Wink wink
You are getting old Kirk. You deserve to go slower now
@Kirk Giordano plastering Inc. i also love to renovate old houses. I have two workers in Portugal and I sell the finished houses after about 3 months.
Kirk, When you lath a shed or house, does the lath need to be one continuous piece? Example: a simple 10X10 shed. Should it be lath all the way around the shed with with one continuous piece or can you just make sure to just overlap the corners?
Kirk I'm 54 and still hit the stucco trade hard. My uncle the man who showed me the trade. Enjoyed the work till he retired at 70. He had the best people skills when talking to customers or vendors. Lots of respect to you Kirk
Howdy Vin Martinez, thank you, my friend. I believe talking skills simply consist of one's knowledge in their field and common honesty. Here’s wishing you and yours a happy holiday season. From the entire plastering Giordano Family
