FAQ, Textures, And Colors

This video explains in great detail how Plastering a new finish coat with a sand finish and then applying a skip trowel texture is achieved.
These plastering tips will help to minimize cracking in stucco homes.
The cracks on these walls are a bit extensive.
However, these extensive cracks, vertical and horizontal, are still fixable with insights or a deeper understanding of any plastering.
Most plastering contractors with years of experience understand what’s necessary to correct basecoats.
Note: All stucco homes can and will develop some hairline above and over below windows and especially doors.
This is partly because of the invisible vibrations when opening and closing them.
But mainly caused by months, let alone years of rainwater which lifts homes when the eth becomes saturated, then when dryer conditions return, settling, then voilà movement, which causes hairline cracks.
BTW, when doing two-coat stucco work, it is normal to get these hairline cracks.
Quality paint, such as Sherwin Williams, usually floods hairline cracks.
If they are wide, a tube of flexible caulking will fix them in just a few minutes.

TIP: You may also type in any question you may have on Stucco/Plastering issues on our channel, and like magic, a video will appear to explain how it’s done.
This feature is miles ahead of a plastering forum link.
Then kick back, relax, and enjoy the show! 🍿

Who wants all that dust and noise? THAT seal coating is powerful product, also allows for even suction that is maintenance free and more uniform. Grinder would also put waves into surface more than needed. It’s plumb from being rodded so a grinder is just drama

Kirk Giordano plastering Inc. I would normally wet the wall first then use my wall chaser set to 12mm and score the walls so that I get a good clean key ready then ply thin wet coat followed by a fibreglass mesh ready for my topcoat I know it’s very messy but at least I can walk away from the job knowing my stucco has got a good key

hey Kirk, I completed my one and only stucco job due to you. One of the hardest thing I ever did. A past carpenter, I was hard up for money and a friend let me stucco one of his rentals. A painted cement block. I followed all your instruction. The only problem was you make it look easy. I ended up spraying it on with a hopper scoop but it was florida in august and the stucco seemed to set up almost instantly.. I like to do a high quality job so I put it on twice as quick as contractors I see in the area.

I'm very interested in putting stucco over insulation. I'm into building techniques and it only makes sense for energy efficiency value. I thought of putting half inch treated plywood strips, one and half insulation foam and then stucco the top with stucco. I wish you would do something like this. My technique blocks the heat radiation, thermal break and then leaving the block for thermal mass. I'm a midwestern carpenter and now digging into stucco because of you. Kepp up the work and let me know what you think. I think with energy and solar panels your viewers would like it. Dig it into solar panel insulation etc. Solar salesmen are sweeping my area in florida.

I had my daughter help me when she was younger and we hung doors, windows, put up crown moldings etc., she now she is a Registered Nurse in a hospital and helping those unfortunate souls who caught the virus.

Have companies moved to get their plastering products fire rated for exteriors in Cali?…. If ya get the time could you do a video on this fire rating exteriors plastering finishes subject?

Kirk Giordano plastering Inc. sorry I wasn’t clear I am trying to do this in three coats. I suspected that there might be sand, however is seems to be weak. I can scratch it off with my fingers. I can hit it hard and hurt my hand so it’s compression strength is decent. Once I get the coat on I will finish with the long setting plaster of Paris. I don’t know where to get the lime plaster to finish it. Not at orange or blue. Thanks so much you are very kind

Will stucco spall like concrete if finished too early? Will stucco soak up water and freeze damage?

Had you considered an acrylic stucco ? As long as you have a house paper or wrap
behind the exterior wall surface and allow drainage at the bottom of the covered areas you'll be fine even if water gets behind the wall surface. The synthetic acrylics are designed to be waterproof. Also is the
building designed with a large overhang? Just keeping the rain and runoff away from
your wall will be a major help.

Kirk, I have watched many of your videos in preparation for stuccoing the facade of my office! This video answered my question about ghosting, and what happens when you stop, let it dry and resume- the ghosting seam. So far I have done my scratch coat. What I thought would take me a day took four days! I only have one helper, and in Texas, the heat can wear on you this time of year. Should the brown coat go on quicker? If I have to stop, if I stop on a corner, will I prevent the problem of ghosting since it will be in the corner? I hope to do it all in one sitting like you show here, but we will see if I can. I will make a short video to put on my channel, and give you a shout out. I like the smoother finishes like the Santa Barbara- but I will see how the brown coat goes first. Also, I have a lot of corners due to decorative elements in the wall- recessed windows, pillar-like protrusions from the wall- so the large flat areas are few. Thanks for your great videos!

I like to shake the stucco used for the skip back from the edge before going up on the wall. I get no "knife" edges. I was 20 when an old (retired) union plasterer who worked out at Disneyland showed me that. I'm 74 now. Had to get a new shoulder last year. Plastering is tough work if not dangerous at times. Good stuff Kirk. Been watching a coupe years now.

Hello Mr.Giordano. Great channel. I have a ? I'm a CA coast carpenter applying stucco to a structure that has PT plywood sheathing and Heavy PT wall framing. I was going to handnail in HD galv. nails. Problem. I injured my thumb bad last week, 6 months to heal. I gotta gun staple the stucco wire now. I have my nailer and 304 stainless staples, due to all the lumber being Pressure Treated.
So I just heard from a friend Stucco wire should not be in contact with the stainless steel. Electrolysis? My experience tells me it will be in painted stucco, so. What do you think?

@Kirk Giordano plastering Inc. The wood studs are also pressure treated not jus the sheathing. That is why I chose SS wide crown 1.5" staple. The PT rusts out the Electro Galv. kind in a week. Back to the SS/wire contact. My friend claimed that if the wire /staple connection sat wet in the stucco over the years, the thin galv. coat on your stucco wire would corrode away in a cathode where they touch. Then he said it would be thin rusted wire held by a solid SS staple. I' m not trying to overthink it here but the build site has high humidity and saltwater a mile away. Should i get a fiber type stucco wire to be safe or should I sleep worry free that the contact point will last 100 years? Thank you for your advice.

Great to see you guys and gals again. I watched many of your videos during the quarantine. Question, I have a newer construction house built in 2002. I just noticed that there is no sheeting under the stucco. There is no plywood. The stucco was placed over black paper. Is that common now?

Hi, Kirk — Question about the tools you recommend on your "stuccoplastering" site. I notice you recommend the Milwaukee rotary drill. In one of your videos — unless my memory is failing — I believe you recommend the Bosch "bulldog" rotary drill. I'd like to purchase tools from Amazon via your site, so as to show my appreciation for all your great work. Can you add the Bosch drill to your "tools" section on your stuccoplastering site? Thank you.

Hey Kirk! Plasterer from Pennsylvania here. No expansion joints? I use 1/2" galvanized expansion bead 10ft apart vertically on long walls or spaced out evenly.. Can do off of top of windows or doors also.. Noticed that's where a lot of cracking occurred on this house your doing. We have crazy temperatures here so just wondered what your thoughts on expansion joints are? Live long and Plaster!!

I know this isn’t the topic of this video but I have a serious question about weep screeds. My house had old stucco that my dad had ground off because it was in such bad shape. The house is a pier and beam wood frame house but has a concrete base along the perimeter and a concrete wrap around the framing. So I’ll be putting stucco onto the concrete not the wood framing. I’m in west Texas. Do I actually need a weep screed?

We wanted to replace a glass block window 23 x 23 with a regular window the same size. So we had a window installer put the window in, then we had a drywall guy drywall the inside. Finally we sent a picture of the outside of the window to a stucco guy and he said that the window guy should have installed flashing when he put in the window. I asked him if he could put in the flashing when he stuccoed but he said he does not do that. Should the stucco guy flash the window?…or should the window installer have done it?…Or does it even matter?

Hi Kirk, we want to do our fireplace surround with stucco. Our goal is for it to have a concrete/stone-looking finish. We are going to build the wood frame and then attach Sheetrock. Then we would stucco the Sheetrock. How diluted should the weld-Crete be? Should we do color coat? And do we need to do a scratch coat? Lastly, do you have brand recommendations for stucco/color coat? Thank you so much!! And if these questions are already answered in another video, please just let me know. Thanks again!

    Kirk, please help!
My house is built in 1951, stucco over cinder block in North East – Long Island, NY
Last year, the stucco on the stair wall (similar to your video "Choosing the right cement plaster for your home") began cracking and flaking.
I used a stucco patch sold at a big box store to repair it. it was a bucket of powder, just as water.
This year that wall began to crack and another wall directly facing the sun began to crack.
Not just crack but a 1/4" inch of the stucco began to come away from the cinder block.
Under the layer peeling away is painted cinder block
Once I scrape the loose away, do I use the 2:1 diluted Weld Crete and then what product over this?
I want to keep the wall white until I do the complete remodel next year so no need for color now
    Thank you sir,
    Walt

Question for you to clarify. When describing your tools, you sing praises of your long trowel. I see from your demonstrations that this trowel is the boss! You referenced that long trowel against what I thought was called a mortarboard, but the audio was a bit weak. It sounded like you called it a hock or possibly hod? I am a rank amateur with regard to stucco, but I looked up these words and it seems that they mean quite different things. What exactly do you call it (the mortarboard?) Great video, by the way. Very informative.

COLOR COAT LAST FOREVER….well yea but it fades out in less than 10 years just like anything and looks bad. That is why I am a painter. some people think you never should paint stucco and that is not true. Paint can last longer than stucco color coat because is is NOT a cement finish. It has binder that protects the colorants. Unlike stucco which just has pigments.
KIrk is the Best in his trade and I am the best in mine. Being said I am not saying anything bad about him or what he does. I am just saying that as a painter we are both correct in doing what we do. There is a time to re stucco and there is a time to paint stucco for a longer lasting even color on your stucco. Some guys sell that stuff too called fog coat. WHich is a RIP OFF. IMO. It does not properly adhere because it is not mixed into the cement. Then It cannot be painted properly painted after because it creates a CHALK finish that nothing will adhere to. Even a bonding agent may have trouble with it.

The first house my parents owned was probably built in the 1910s. They bought it in 1947. Stucco on wood lath. Nebraska's mild climate was not a friend to wood lath! The interior was also on wood lath. People had tried to nail pictures to the wall, bad idea. I'm 78 and worked construction most of my life. Big old houses had crown moldings formed in place with plaster over wood lathe. I repaired a lot of them but with expanded metal lath. Almost no plaster work is done around here any more. Interior is all gyp bd. Outside is over foam.

I just found this channel a couple of weeks and have already learned so much. I have begun to do a little work with lime plastering in my own home. I wish I had known about it before having painted. What I want to know now is if there are any bonding agents that adhere to oil paint.

I've been a drywaller for past 40 years, & watching & listening to you explain what & how you do your projects is great." I can explain it to you but i cant understand it for you" is an old saying, but if anyone with half a brain cant understand it from the way you explain it, then there was no hope for them in the first place! very well done! after 40 years in the business, I still try & learn new things everyday, I've picked up bits & pieces from your videos. You do things alot the way I always have tried to do, from dealing with customers to knowledge of your products, to application to dealing with help. Its nice to see old school attitude & workmanship. Well done, thank you!

Thank you for the time you take to explain things. Let me ask you about my small project that a friend will be helping me with (or rather, I’ll be helping him). I need to apply JUST a TEXTURE coat (over an existing textured coat that is fairly smooth). Two questions: 1) Should I use a bonding agent, and 2) what type of tool for gouges (say 1/8” deep) that get randomly interspersed in the texture? I took a sample pic and tried to paste it here, but the dialogue box won’t allow it.

    Hi Kirk –
I'm doing home that its painted some areas are really bad and stucco falling off with many cracks, contractor wants to hydro pressure wash I'll probably end up with some areas where stucco fall off from pressure wash and some painted (clean) areas, what do you recommend for the bonding process?
Should I go light on painted areas and few coats of bonding where paint and finish stucco coat are no longer exist?
My concern is two different surfaces and last thing I want is to see cracks between the areas or stucco falling off from painted areas
    Beautiful job keep it up
    Thank you in advance

Amazing situational awareness tips man, thank you very much for all the knowledge and insight especially with regard to the raw physics of houses in their natural environment. Years ago one of my customers took out a wall and the carpenters supported the new steel beam on onside nest to the fireplace and on the other next to the staircase. Which side do you think settled first lol. I had to remove about 300lbs of a bubble that failed on the staircase wall due to compression related key failure. Also the stairwells weren't very well engineered in these 1935 era NJ houses.

It came out great though and a lot of that credit goes to you from watching your videos. The one observation I would stress to anyone watching your stuff is that the work itself is very hard, and I'm a pretty big guy but as a one man band, mixing and troweling yourself… definitely double your time and energy budget if you're not used to it. It is NOT like regular spackle work for those interested in transitioning, be prepared for a workout. Again Thank you very much Kirk!
