Stucco/Plaster I had my share man, I’ve Plastered everywhere man

as the song goes: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ov4epAJRPMw&feature=youtu.be/
Legend Johnny Cash – I’ve Been Everywhere Lyrics.

Hello, our faithful subscribers and plasterers around the world! 🌎
When the homeowner asked me, “have you ever seen a wall with so much excess sand, I thought, Winnemucca!” then I said, “Listen, man. I’ve plastered every home in this here land.” Just like my boy Johhny sang, I’ve traveled every road in this here land.”
I was totin’ my pack along the dusty Winnemucca road.
When along came a semi with a high and canvas-covered load
If you’re going to Winnemucca, Mack, with me, you can ride.
So I climbed into the cab, and then I settled down inside…….. Fact is I sho-nuff have a wild imagination, cause I did think, Winnemucca.

The brown coat is applied over the scratch coat to prepare the finish coat application’s plaster base. The first base coat is called a scratch coat, the second is called a brown coat. In two-coat work, there is a single base coat and a finish coat.
Tip, most folks don’t realize that the paper will absorb the moister out of the first coat of plaster, usually in about 15 minutes, depending on the weather. The second coat can now be applied as the first one has adhered and is setting.

Hi kirk what accelerator do you use, a good tip for tape is to use a heat gun to warm the surface and when the tape is applied heat the tape to activate the glue it never peels off.

Morning Shane, I used to use Luminite years back these days I use same-day products such as Rapid set stucco sold at Homedepot or lowes, or Eisenwall, same manufacturer but only sold at plastering material yards.
There about 10 other same-day stucco products sold these days.
In fact, every manufacturer of cement or stucco products has its own brand of same-day stucco. Almost all of these same day stucco's should not be mixed more than 3 to 5 minutes as the strength is then compromised. As far as the heat gun, I did have one on the truck that I use to apply colors then dry, immediately to see formulas.
But on this repair, I grabbed a towel from my truck and wipped away any moister or dust, then did the tapping again.

FYI, we don't film for money, we film to teach as I will be pushing daisies soon enough, the world of plastering needs some insight as to why and how, I'm that guy, for now, anyway.

Good Morning, Michael, I have only one video that shows after painting. I had another in progress that we spent too many hours going back to film the after painting video, after 5 trips to his house which was a half-hour away all within a year, I decided never to do that ridiculous shit again.
I tell all my clint's I can spot a patch no matter who does it, including myself, and that all I can do is give it my best shot.

      G'day A R Diaz, thank you, brother.
Were all still learning as materials keep changing. For the smooth finishes, the trowel I prefer makes it easier, I had 15 men for many years, before I narrowed it down to mostly family.
Some of the guys I had at that time could out plaster me with a 12 X 5 trowel and achieve prettier finishes, especially in the smooth coat finishes. I found this shocking but loved this fact. There's no glory in being the best, except for having to do most of the work.
You're a master plasterer; thus, you know, smooth coating is by far the most difficult to apply, let alone master.

Good morning, I learned a lot from a man we used to call, "Old man Whitey," All of us loved to work with him as he was slow as the hills. Thus we didn't have to work hard.
Old whitey was the guy who they sent to repair the fronts of many of the arches of the old train ports at the San Francisco piers, these days, most have been converted into restaurants.
Can't leave out my best buddy, "Fred Smith," who worked for his brother, "Danny Smith plastering," for over 40 years. Now retired.
The absolute best in plastering with the ability to improvise.
I've yet to meet a man this good, except my pal, Andy, owner of "Davis Plastering," located in Oakland ca. whos still in his prime.

Morning Diatonic, thank you, the dislikes are from fellas who possibly think, man, how could he like what he does, some border on jealousy or don't like my way of thinking or possibly the fact I have fun while they want just the facts, Jack. I'm supposed to just explain how to get the job done, without any human conversation. That kind of boring stuff takes the fun out of any project.
The fact is I enjoy the rude or neagative feedback.

Dangerous to tell the client to not see any difference. When daylight shines next to it you will see it for sure. Better to fill and scratch and float the wall afterwards from the rain pipe to the right of the corner with a thin layer floated in on the entire wall. Also the cracks around need to be meshed or it will crack again when sun dries it out. Now i don’t know all the factors regarding the needs and budget from the client but i would never tell them they won’t be able to see the difference. Always tell them it can be slightly visible or else they would have to pay to do it right and float the entire wall. Also the sides where the stucco meets the older wall needs to be sandblasted around so the stucco adheres to the cold wall instead of the paint. It’s like stuccoing over a thin piece of paper and it will fall off .

Howdy DaBoss, I did indeed say Winnemucca, as when the contractor asked, "have you ever seen a patch with so much excess sand," it reminded me of the words from, "Jonny Cash's" brilliant song that started off with "have you ever seen a road with so much dust and sand." the word Winnemucca, popped into my head and out of my mouth, so when I said it, he thought I was crazy. He may be right. Click on below to hear it.

is it plaster or Lime? Lime is really soft. You can poke with your finger nail

      Reply
    • Kirk Giordano plastering Inc. says

      January 28, 2020 at 1:40 am

Evening Mr. Warner, easy question, what I do is tap the wall lightly with a hammer, when I hear a solid sound that is a stud or 2 x 4, we know that all home are built with studs apart at 16 inches apart.
Then find 16 inches away, again, tap with a hammer to make certain you are indeed on another stud.
Once you know the rules you can find studs easy.
Now predrill a hole through the soft gypsum into the stud, then use bolts to screw the steel-framed tv stand used to support the weight into the studs.
If you miss, no big deal, move over a bit and find the center of the stud and try again.
Nothing with weight will have the strength to hold a tv if you're between the studs, we call this empty area, the fields. If you make 20 extra holes but do indeed find the studs, mount your brackets into the studs, then just caulk the holes in the field.
Or you can find a stud finder that finds the metalheads of the nails that hold the sheetrock or lath strips.

Personally, as a spreader, I can't tell one from the other.
All are eco-friendly. FYI, I dont advise applying any of them in a shower, a bathroom is okay, but not a shower.

Hello Kirk. I love your videos and have learned a ton from them. Thank you! One thing I have wondered as I have watched them is why you sometimes don't extend the Plaster Weld out farther where your repair meets the painted existing stucco. There is always a portion on the edge of the patch with no Plaster Weld (blue in this video) where your plaster is applied over the existing paint. I know you know what you are doing, but have you ever had adhesion issues of your patches in this area where there is no bonding agent?

    Reply
    • Kirk Giordano plastering Inc. says

      January 27, 2020 at 11:57 pm

Good afternoon Dave, If no bonding agent is applied, the stucco will not adhere to a painted surface. I used just to the inner perimeter as that as far as the new stucco needs to be applied, the rest is just colored water, which will wash off. I do tell folks to hose down the stucco so that it will cure stronger and faster, excess water from the stucco will also wash off.

Howdy from Sacramento! Thanks for sharing. You're clearly a pro. You've convinced me that I, as someone who has never plastered, should definitely hire out the patch job that I will have when I cover up the man door to my garage. Some things are better left to the pros, and matching the plaster finish on my 1960 home looks like one of those things!

Evening mark, one should never put any bonding agent in the cement plaster as the cement renders the glue or bonding agent useless.
The proper way to make sure a cement plaster adheres to any surface is to apply the bonding agent directly by brush or roller to a clean wall. In other words, paint the bonding agent on a clean wall.

Exzackory Joseph, I was toting my pack along the long dusty Winnemucca road
When along came a semi with a high canvas-covered load
If you're goin' to Winnemucca, Mack with me you can ride
And so I climbed into the cab and then I settled down inside
He asked me if I'd seen a road with so much dust and sand
And I said, "Listen! I've traveled every road in this here land!"

      I've been everywhere, man

When you mentioned "being the best"I find its usally guys with 10 to 15 yrs experience they still have youth on thier side l know I was like that and I'm just saying in general.Ive been plastering for 35 yrs now from California to Florida with every state in between and up and down the east coast and if I learned anything its that there is no "best" plasterer out there.I learn and teach every where I go and thats why I love plastering there is no limit its a life long journey of experiences for those who love it.
Im in New Mexico now learnig even more.
I want to say I can hang with the "best" but there is none only the best I can be. Thanks

I disagree, there 3% in the world that are pure masters and the best of the best , they surpassed the "learning level" and have attached themselves to their craft spirituality and reached the highest point . ( I am talking in general, from musicians, to chess players, there is always going to be the top 3% )

@painter painting Thankyou for that information .With all do respect I think your reasoning is flawed. There isn't a best musician maybe a best trumpet player or best guitar player.Theres too many instruments in the world for there to be a Best musician. That's what applies to plastering .Countless materials unlimited applications from all over the world for thousands of years.Im sorry there is no best plasterer, Alot of it is opinion and thats just mine.God bless you

Evening Michael, sorry, my brother, this is not normal. Has this happened to me in the time I have been plastering? You betcha. Especially on interior walls.
This happens more often when only one coat is applied but can occur with two layers also, too much trowel pressure, and the wall is too dry. It's because the plasterer pushed too hard. Thus the finish lifts from the coat are supposed to adhere to.
The best way to avoid this is to apply the first coat and allow it to dry, then double up, when the first coat is dried or cured, no matter how hard the second coat is applied, it won't or shouldn't lift from the first coat.
Often sometimes chattering occurs too. This is when the stucco does not lift as in your picture, but cracks in every direction in some areas.

@Kirk Giordano plastering Inc. Kirk thank you so much for the detailed explanation. We paid a lot for this job, it's not in all areas but I'm afraid it will show up later. Is there anything I can do on my end to prevent the damage from getting worse, maybe like filling it with a sealer or something or perhaps fill it in with some stucco?

Evening Apply Dude, when I said I've seen everything, man, I too have seen a couple of garages with no paper, wire, or wood left just the stucco holding up the garage.
I have seen to much-rusted wire to name them all here. Although most stucco-netting or mesh wire is galvanized, some structures not only rust but deteriorate the entire substrate leaving just stucco caves.
I know they are still strong, but I haven't had the nerve to enter them.

Hey Kirk, thanks for all the great videos! Out of curiosity have you ever heard of or ran across plaster and lathe in between studs? I am remodeling a house in New England and have just run across this. Plaster and lathe in between the studs towards the outside of the house, with your standard plaster and lath on the inside. my best guess is an attempt at insulating.

funny though I picked up 140LF block wall and stucco job and its hard ass work, I have the skill but physically its just brutal….ive done patches, and repairs but setting block and spreading stucco everyday is hard ass work….I did go 1/2 in so the lines wont show .. pony wall between columns she wants Santa Barbara smooth finish and will be my first one….if I cant do it ill get someone but pretty sure I can….as finish carpenter I see every detail

Evening Kezza, yes, I have been wearing one forever, as when I worked behind a "Tommy gun," where they sprayed on the stucco, we all had to hustle or run and twist often below the scaffold level's which would kick our arses, at the end of the day. Since I didn't want to be "beat up," I would wear a belt, this became a habit.

What's the name of the guy you recommended in Sacramento? I am trying to diagnose a leak in stucco with a foam back. It's about 4 feet under a window, at a stud and rotted a 1×4 diagonal brace that's built in to the wall. It appears the water was coming in at a nail hole. I am doing a bathroom remodel. Does the stucco wall need to be torn out to fix the leak?
I guess I am pretty sure where the leak is getting in, but where is it originating? There is a window 3 feet above the leak. It's on the southwest wall in Sacramento

    Hello,
I’m Chris from Massachusetts. There aren’t too many stucco homes out here, but that means that those few stand out. My wife and I are in the process of closing on one of these 100 year old gems, and it looks like we’re going to need some repairs of stress cracks and reflash a hip roof and some windows. I’m in the building trades as an energy specialist (how to improve the fuel and electric efficiency of a home). If we were talking HVAC, plumbing, or insulation, I could find a contractor easily since they are plentiful. Unfortunately, stucco’s rarity means contractors are either inexperienced (between jobs as a Sheetrock plasterer), or a large company that wins bids for new Taco Bell’s or Municple buildings (not repairs for small $).

Your videos have been increasingly informative, and I’ve learned a ton from them. But, the one thing it doesn’t help with is explaining how to find a contractor in areas where stucco skill is less common. Would you happen to have any advice for me (and anyone else)? Thank you very much!

Yes of course. The only companies/contractors near me are Sheetrock plasterers that have never done stucco in their life but don’t mind giving it a shot, or large construction companies who do exclusively new construction (experienced, but just one company in the area). I’m currently trying to see if I can snag one of the stucco guys from the large experienced company to do it as a side gig when they’re slow. Any other suggestions on how to find someone would be appreciated.

First off all let me thank you for all the content you put in your YouTube channel, its amazing work.

I want to ask you how to get rid of shadows in the finish of the house. We bought a house about 3yrs ago and it looks like they remove and cover where windows were at one point, so this has left a shadow. On the back of the house it has a big crack where they added a room. Will paint cover it or does it need some stucco done? what do you recommend ? or can you tell me whats going on? How can i send you some pictures?

Kirk,Buddy, I have to send out a huge thank you to you and your son, and crew, for taking the time to share your expertise that took years of work to perfect. I've watched so many of your videos, learned so much about the right way to do things. Then I took a hand grinder with a diamond blade and cut out a 30 foot x 12 inch section of the back of my house down to the wood. Took a grace membrane and filled the space from top to bottom. Used metal flashing above and below the PT 2×10"s I drilled into the side of my house. Filled in the stucco at the top, and poly caulked the heck out of all of it. Painting it to match the house tomorrow in preparation of building a deck off the back of the house. It took for ever because I couldn't figure out a plan. The 2 story house I live in is block and stucco level 1, and wood stud and stucco level 2. Where do I put the ledger?. When I opened up the back of the hose at the top of the block I found rectangle trusses between the floors, 24" apart going away from me. I had no idea what to do.Code doesn't work for that and a 13 foof deck and 24" between lag bolts. I asked every G C I met, and contractor that would listen. Do I attach the ledger to the concrete sill, or the wood wall above it. No Body ever really had an answer. I finally figured out you attach the ledger at the height you need it to be, and attach it to what ever is at that height using code. Or in my case, I massaged code a bit, but that ledger is going no where .  Anyway, I could have never done it without your informative video's, where to put it, how to flash it, where to use grace membrane, how to make sure you leave room for the deck under the door, etc. And of course, the correct way to to install paper, wire , and stucco. Although I broke a couple of rules, I'm feeling pretty good about my ledger.I can never thank you enough, if not for your video's I would not have a 30" ledger on the back of my house waiting for the next step. Thanks Kirk, Love your videos,

nice video again. I'm in florida and originally a craftsman form Illinois. Everyone is a HACK down here. they don't even know the different types of sand/aggregate. I would love to know more. Most of my stuff is from Home depot of a local concrete supply house that doesnt have much knowledge. Great video. Im the stucco over insulation guy trying to learn more from you.

Hi Kirk. I've been watching your videos for some time now. I'm an Australian, so I'm trying my best o translate the American product to what is available here in Australia. Basically I have a lot of internal brick wall I would like to(sorry if I name a process incorrect) cement render all internally walls. Then finish with a plaster or chalk finish. All surfaces will be painted. Basically I wish all walls to be very smooth. Bunnings is where I would purchase all product. I probably will buy ready to go( just add water) bagged stuff. Mate if you help with the product to use would be great. Keep it going.cheers from Australia
