Good evening truth Dude, madeleine is my youngest daughter, she works with us when she's not traveling. She is actually a marine biologist. However, it's tough to find work in our area with that training. She teaches scuba diving and scraps barnacles off boats in S.F, for other means of cash.
Any organizations seeking an energetic and intelligent Bioligish write to me, I'll forward it to Maddie.
Currently, Madeleine, also working part-time with a group of environmental attornies in Oakland, trying to save the planet.
Maddie also has an impressive resume.
This is a weird shout out for my daughter, as one never knows who's watching.

Kirk, sure wish you'd stop making statements like "concrete is 3" thick". Perhaps a patio is, but not a foundation for a house.

Maybe the crack problem is heaving due to moisture, or maybe it's long-term settlement of the foundation. Or maybe it's caused by racking from earthquakes (older houses rarely have sufficient shear walls or foundation hold downs to resist earthquakes), or maybe the framing has begun to rot due to moisture/insect damage. The point is, absent some investigation in to the root problem of the cracks, you can't make a proper fix. Slapping some caulk over a crack is likely just a cosmetic fix that might last a few years. Most likely it's just a waste of time and money that would be better spent fixing the underlying problem.

@Kirk Giordano plastering Inc. Kirk, you make my point. But the problem I have is you over-simplify and can give people inappropriate advice on some of your videos. I've heard you give similar explanations of why stucco is cracking on other projects, but as lawyers say, there aren't "facts in evidence" to allow you to make such definitive statements. Realty is, absent being in an area of highly (critically) expansive clays (aka The Orinda Formation for those here in the East Bay Area), it's unlikely that the ground swells enough to be the major cause of cracking. More than likely the framing is rotting or the foundation is settling (due to insufficient compaction/poor subgrade material) or damage from earthquakes racking older, flexible houses. Or some combo of them. And yes, happy holidays to you and yours…

Good morning Arthur, again, I have quite a few videos out of the more than 800 online at this time that deals with cracking in great detail.
The advice I explain in all our videos is for the beginners, DIY'er and or experts.
It matters little what attorneys say about any trade. Their interest includes what benefits their clients regardless of reality.
I have invested more than 40 years in the plastering trade and still enjoy it. Can you believe I get paid to do what I would do for free? What a country.

      December 23, 2019 at 8:41 pm

Good morning Fred, Sometimes, when repairing with stucco, no.
As a rule, you have to clean the area thoroughly, such as wire brushing this alone removes most of the dust, dirt, and grime in the crack so that the caulking gets a better grip.
It helps to have the caulking mushroom inside the crack for longevity.
Often if wire brushing alone does not remove a buckling crack, indeed, it's best to scrape it out.

"You see something that's wrong, fix it!" Why is that so hard for some guys to understand Kirk? Respect brother!

"You see something that's wrong, fix it!" Uhmmm? How about fixing that rotten wood door trim and installing a drip cap over the top? Calking around some rotten wood like that is useless. The water ingress above the door is more likely the reason for that crack than the cement slab below.
I'm surprised Kirk would make a video like this and not even mention any of that.

So if it is a thin hairline crack, is there a need to fill it in with caulk? Or should I just paint over it to fill it in? Is there a general crack width that is not needed to fill in with caulk? I am in florida what kind of paint do you recommend?

Evening Andrew, some hairline cracks can be flooded with quality paints.
Sherman Williams paints are considered one of the best paints money can buy. However, it cost 80 dollars a gallon, folks get what they pay for.

I live in an area that I will never have to stucco. I love your videos and they make me want to move to southwest to a stucco house.

I live in Nevada we have cinder block walls covered with stucco, the watering of vegetation breaks it down (could be the neighbor overwatering), is there a way to prevent the water damage from reoccurring and then repair the cracks. It looks awful.

Greetings Kirk and family from a fellow Irish roots fella with blue eyes and a bit of ginger thrown in 🙂 You Kirk have given me the techniques and material confidence to carry out repairs on my house I bought a year ago in southern Spain. Been in the building industry myself scaffolding for over 30 years but never done any stucco, render type work until now. What started out as a bit of flaky paint removal on my rendered house turned out to be a can of worms, the render had become so soft and sandy in areas because of lack of maintenance I unleashed a can of worms! Anyway I'm slowly getting there and results are good ( you might even approve ) it's difficult doing everything solo.Could you possibly do a tutorial on how to render awkward areas? My roof has double clay tiles that butt up against a parapit wall and this area is proving somewhat difficult. Love the videos, keep up the great work I feel your passion… Respect! Btw my name is Patrick
