Do I see Kirk sweating, lol? Amazing how much hotter it is at the ceiling. As always you make it look so easy.
Evening Clint, it would take more than this to make me sweat, like standing in front of a judge, man, that would call for some deep breathing accompanied by sweating.

I’d love to see some more interior plastering videos. Maybe a barrel ceiling, structo lite, diamond veneer. Or venetian.
Howdy, T Maranda, no worries, type in structo-lite barrel ceiling in our channel, a video we did last year show's us doing a barrel ceiling and guess the material we applied, you guessed it Structo-Litte plus we applied a veneer finish over this basecoat too.

Great tips as usual. I always tell guys the lath is razor sharp and behaves like pure evil, I got a few scars from it to. Rib lath I've only seen under tile around here, but we don't have much stucco in the north, mostly EIFS, mostly on commercial buildings.
Evening Max, too real, all soffit mesh is pure evil, that's scary stuff, I wear gloves as a rule.

Hi Kirk, Id like to try doing a plaster veneer finish on new walls in my 50s house to match the original construction but can’t find “veneer plaster” at any of my local suppliers. Are there any other products that can be used to achieve a similar effect?
Structo lite is available almost everywhere keep looking
greg9872010 I live 5-6 hours south of Santa Fe, NM and about 4.5 hrs from Albuquerque, NM. I have the same problem where I'm at. A lot of "repairs" and "make it look like that room" customers. Stay here and watch as many of Kirks videos as you can, they are all very helpful and full of information. Now where kirk is in California, they have a lot of suppliers and warehouse distributors that have all the different materials. Not here where I am at either. But if you able to search the web, you will find someone who has the products. My local Ace was able to find 5 bags of one and then I found a guy that supplied other material within a 2 hour drive, which allowed me to work that in. Not everyone has 10 Home Depots to choose from, but you just have to start making calls and asking around, and soon you'll find the products. I have 1 lumber yard, 1 Ace, and another hardware store where I'm at and only 1 of those even knows what Structolite is and only has it on "special order" because no one knows how or uses it regularly. This also makes a niche for someone that knows how and wants to get better at it.
Kirk is truly the man at this type of repair and any type of plaster, so watch all you can and ask questions, he's very informative.
rhino mite , ryan, thanks for the replies! I’ll keep looking
I have nothing to do with building or plastering, why do I find Kirks videos so relaxing, thanks from UK.

I've done drywall for 30 years in NJ and I've learned some great techniques from your videos. I'm in St. Petersburg, FL now and lots of old plaster homes. Looks like a commercial job there but I would of put up a piece of 5/8 sheetrock and skimmed hot mud over that to save the lath time scratch coat…what do you think?
Good evening Andrew, I think that would be easier for most folks. There's more than one way to skin a cat, good tip brother.

what were you using for mud?
Evening Matt, that's an ancient Chinese secret.
OK structo lite, You can add retardants to slow the set time or accelerator to speed it up. I added a handful or two of Portland cement.

What product did you use. What accelerator did you use too?
Evening Matthew and Andrea, that's the million dollar question,
Jason mixed structo-lite plaster with a handful or two of regular portland cement.
Few poople know this is possible and even fewer plasterers.

Not meant as a criticism,in the UK plaster is mixed thinner and isn't as easy to use above your head, keep spreading my friend 🙂
No worries my fellow plasterer from the UK.
If I were applying portland cement or many other types of cement gravity would have had a go with me.
Jason mixed me some magical sticky structo-lite then added the perfect amount of Portland to make it appear as I was a wizard on the trowel.

Northern patriot manchester not meant for criticism here either but I’m also from the uk and if I done exactly the same thing Kirk is doing here I’d be using bonding which is very similar in body an stickiness to what he’s using! I think what your getting at is skimming ceilings that only have to be a few millimetres thick and I’m sure Kirk has done his fare share of them too only with different products!
Good afternoon my fellow plasterers from the UK.
This depth was almost one and a half inches.
My son Jason and fellow plasterer mixed in a specific way with a well-chosen type of cement so as to adhere and not fall all over me.

Hello Kirk . Can I use a 20 min Easy Sand , let it dry then apply a final coat with UniKal ? This is on a big patch . “Live long and plaster”. Thank You.
Evening Ray, if it were me, I'd use one Coat Unical as it has silica sand and is calcined gypsum much stronger than just plain Easy sand gypsum.

Hey if I were to get one of those drywall skimming blades from tapetech (those pricey ones) what size would you recommend?
Evening my friend, I'd recommend an 18-inch blade it's big but it's better to use it and get used to it as if you buy a small one, in the long run, you will spin your wheels doing twice as much scooping.

I have clean buckets .tools etc., nice cool humid day, USG plaster bonder over old horsehair lath. been doing this a while but had to switch to half buckets, could it be my paddle mixer?

Kirk Giordano Plastering advise to homeowners and experts
I am a long standing video student of Kirk Giordano (and half Italian). I think the question that you posed is a good one for a German rocket scientist, educated in plastering and meteorology. I recommend you just experiment with your mistakes and learn from them.
Why?
Because I can!
🙂
Kirk I have a question,
Our home was built in 1939. We have all lath and plaster throughout. Last year our swamp cooler on the roof leaked because of some flashing that needed to be replaced. It created a mess below it, we had a team come in and dry everything with huge fans and a dehumidifier.. so as of now the paint is peeling and some of the sand {I guess that’s what it is} is showing through.. do we need to score beyond the peeling paint/plaster and remove it down to the lath OR can we just scrape away what’s peeling and patch??
Howdy Bro Man, tough question, you would have to explore which areas are flaking or peeling, then remove these and apply another finish coat. If it were me, I'd remove only the areas that need it as 90% could still be tight, this takes practice to understand what to leave or take off.

I never see you use any fiber tape. Without the tape we almost always get a hairline crack. Why not just use it from the beginning?
G'day Kevin, with traditional sheetrock where all the boards meet all the seams, should get either paper or fiberglass mesh tape.
This is not taping mud were using so not necessary in fact it's, counterproductive.

Sure, I understand. I run my own drywall company. We do hardcoat and stucco too, though less often. But even with Portland cement we’ve gotten hairline cracks my times than not if we don’t use some kind of tape after the base coat. You guys have no issues?
