Can you not use a notched trowel as well?
Ricky Bobby ….probably could, but it may tend to clog with mud necessitating frequent cleaning off.
Howdy fellas, I have used notched trowels and Darbies that will make for an upcoming video, where I take that same wall spread it out with a hawk and trowel, then with one side of a Darbie will screed it out then flip the Darbi and scratch it with the other another v side.
I have all these tools, but don't like to use them as the way in this video is faster.
but for your future amusement, I will explain and show this as plastering all day is kinda boring without showing unusually things that also can also be done without comprimising the intergrty of the stucco..

Haha, I think it's funny that you are calling it "scary"-fier 🙂
Pretty sure it's supposed to be pronounced "scar"- ifier though, because you're leaving scars in the wall.
Howdy Alejandro dude, I thought that your name for this scratcher made more sense, so, as I have no life beyond stucco stuff and I was bored I googled the pronunciation, it does indeed pronounce it Scary fire, sorry brother.
If it said Scari fire, it would be easier to remember as I would simply think of Scar Face where Al Pachino played the role.

Hi Kirk, as a spread from the 60's, in the UK we 'were' taught to use the 'Wavey-Line' method, and the reasoning for that was; as the render dries the shrinkage pulls from 'all' directions. If you only go horizontal the render could be prone to cracking vertically as there's no bonding to stop it in tha direction. Whereas if you Wavey-line it, all angles are covered 'just incase the drying is a bit eratic ….. (Maybe a bit too scientific for most of us, but worth consideration) …… Just a thought ….. Pete 🙂
Howdy Peter Moring, my fellow UK plastering professional, actually that makes perfect sense to me, thus when I do scratch jobs I may do this, I used this job merely for an example, we finished this wall a few hours later as this was the same day back to back cement plastering system, that video is coming soon as the texture was unique.

Sharing stucco secrets and or common sense plastering tips
Hi Kirk, I am Up here in Sacramento area and have had a one stop shop repair my wall after a car hit it. It is an EIFS stucco house 2008. The texture coating of the stucco was applied a couple weeks ago and is cracking diagonally on each window corner the cracks are hairline cracks and a couple vertical cracks along the bottom of the stucco from the window. The sub-contractor says this is normal because the primer and painting haven't been done to seal it. Is this a correct answer or was the texture coat incorrectly applied around the window?
Howdy Fire eagle dude, the fact is almost all scratch and brown coats, "first and second coats," the best way to cure stucco faster is to hose down each coat with a garden hose fully saturating the cement with water, this cause's the stucco to expand then when drying conditions occur the stucco shirks, causing hairline cracking. Many products encourage the use of water throughout the drying process.
If a person does not wet the walls they will still hairline at window and door ends and of vents too.
If a base coat is never wet down intentionally and month go by then the rains come, this effect of rainwater will then expand the stucco then shirk back when dry conditions return, thus I receive many calls during the first winter rains of folks saying, our walls have cracked and a company just did the work only a few months prior, why? the plastering companie is correct, your walls are curing, a third coat and or paint with a quality primer and paint should flood these hairline cracks.

Good eveningRoblox, that comment has made you my newest and bestest pal,

WRONG! The reason why you scratch in a tight sine wave instead of just horizontal is SURFACE AREA. You get more surface area of bond. Further that extra surface area prevents the top coat sagging back when you rule with a straight edge. You thus get flatter work. Thus is especially important in wet weather
Atta boy Stacy give en hell, it's usually folks who start a comment with a rude method that don't pay attention as they know all answeres to life questions.
His first word out of his mouth and capitalized, reminds me of the old joke, "what do you tell a guy with two black eyes?"
nothing, he's already been told twice.

2.20 most of the customers wall is scratched horizontally which is incorrect
2.50 wave he shows is way too slight should be tighter.then goes over the waves horizontally???????
Ends the video saying its imortant to know the does and don’ts . I just educated you
You can go vertical. You do it if you are working in wet weather so the walls dry faster so you can get a finish
The CAPITALS? To grab peoples attention so that they do not make the mistake you show and they make life harder fir themselves by using sloppy practices
I don’t consider anyone who questions anything i say as giving it to me. It is an opportunity to self examine what my beliefs are. If you started doing the same and reconsider the video you might do yourself and your customers a favour and scratch a wall in the correct manner .
Further you have not taken into consideration that different patts of the country have different types of sand. If you live in a region where your sand is fine or you are doing traditional stucco , scratching at half an inch will cause those scratch lines to Ghost through the top coat even when its painted.
Further if you use a tight sine wave pattern and increase the surface area of your mechanical bond .you will decrease the likelihood of the top coat crazing
Also you do nit completely soak a scratched wall up with water to the manner you have discribed if you are working in cold climates. Its poor advice that will cause inexperienced plasterers a lot of problems
Yeah and kurt thus veiled threat of bkack eyes . Carry on working like that in the Uk after its been explained to you black and white why your wrong and you would most surely pick up a set of black eyes. what an attitude you have. Carry on doing it like that mate.
joe blogs idk wtf your talking about but you sound more lije a college boy than a plasterer
hay Kirt I have some 90lbs bags of plain Portland cement and some sand what do I need to make it a stucco Mix? or can I spread overhead with just porland and sand?
sorry I don't understand 22 scoops of just sand? no portland? and should i add anything more to make a stucco?
22 shovels of sand to 1 bag of Portland but I dont know,Kirk will chime in
thanks man
Howdy Stacy Dude, to understand Sand and plaster mix ratios click here, https://youtu.be/Kp_mJmg1p3M
I'd strongly suggest you cut the sand down to, instead of 3 to 1 you add two parts sand to one part cement plaster or portland cement.
As defying gravity takes a stickery stucco, more sand is less likely to adhere over head, so 2 to 1 and you should be fine.
You will get dropouts, no worries unless they fall in your face, happens to the best of us.
I'd suggest you always work away from your nelwy stucco areas, then com back and fill in the dropouts.

Kirk Giordano’s Plastering answers to real life stucco questions
Hey Kirt, love your videos! I'm a subscriber and constantly find myself checking out your work/tips. Question for ya…do you have any suggestions for stucco'ing a container home? I realize we don't want water sitting on the container so roof will be designed accordingly. Ya think it needs a water barrier wrap and/or lath for the sides though? I don't want to put holes in the container, more than I have to, so I might have to weld the lath on… And lastly, do you know anything about them crete sprayers? I've seen several types out there, I'm thinking that would make stucco'ing a 12 container 3 story home real quick and easy . Thanks!
Good morning John, interesting question, I am not a big fan of applying stucco to mobile homes for obvious reasons or shipping containers, however of course it can be done.
I'd suggest welding 3.4 wire mesh sheets aka, Diamond mesh lath.
These steel sheets are galvanized for use as lath for either stucco or plaster, they come in sheets similar to sheetrock but half the width, roughly 2×8 sheets.
No need for self-furring as the vertical grooves in this metal containers will allow the stucco to mushroom through.
Hers a huge tip, if you are serious and wish to save a ton of time and not become frustrated, useless sand for the first coat as you just want that coat to barely go through the mesh then set.
If you mix with a typical mix of 3 times the sand to one part stucco you will lose half the stucco under the sheets, which will give you no benefits, but instaed frustration.
Miz the stucco as I do for stucco for cielings, sticky.
Personally if I owned such a home, I feel it can look like any other stucco project with the right know how.

Hi Kirk, love your YouTube videos. I will soon be sealing up some cracks in my cement driveway, which also doubles as the roof for our drive under garage. The slab is about 10 inches thick and is reinforced with thick steel re-bar. I need it to be as waterproof as humanly possible. Can you recommend a good crack sealant? Once done, what would you recommend I use to resurface the concrete? And is there anything I can use to seal it against water? We live in southern New Hampshire, so it can get quite cold in the winter with a LOT of snow, and in the summer 100 degree temps are not out of the question. Thanks in advance for any advice you can provide!
Good evening Greg, I deal with stucco products for walls, however, if it were me I suggest stuco-flex, simply pressuare wash, and trowel on

Hi Kirk. I was doing some stucco work outside my home the other day and when I was finished I was sweeping up some portland cement I had spilled. And as you could imagine the dust went everywhere and some had settled on the glass on my windows and without me noticing. So a few days later it rained and after it stopped I saw my windows had dirty raindrop marks on them. So now they always look dirty because of the light layer of dried cement on them. I tried rubbing it off with paint thinner, but that didnt work. Do you know any ways of getting the cement off? Thanks Kirk and I really like your videos, they've helped me a lot when doing stucco work.
Good evening He-Man Dude, of course, wet the windows well then use new razor blades to gently scrape off excess residues.
I buy the pack of razors by the hundreds for my utility knives and do this often to my truck windows.
The skill involved is to use lots of water and as many blades as necessary, as when the blades hit the cement it blunts them, this could scratch a window if a fella is not on the ball.

Help these guys out! how do you know how deep to install the scratch coat & the finish coat ??? do you have a tool to see how thin or deep it is ???
Howdy John, excellent question, the fact is it takes practice. If you wait too long the scratcher won't make a mark too soon it all falls off, the depth is about 3/8, while a color coat is applied by hand troweling the wall with the trowel, it should flow naturally on.

Kirk, I want to stucco my garage and need to know if you can scratch coat one wall at a time? Or is it mandatory to scratch coat the entire building on the same day? Thanks your videos are terrific!
Howdy Dude, yes, you can scratch one wall at a time, this is traditional stucco.
I wouldn't recommend anyone try and do both coats on the same day as material and applications knowledge takes some time in.

is it normal for a scratch coat to crack during the curing process
If you have a painted foundation and you want to repair it and render it again, would you pressure wash it, remove whatever pant you could, then add a bonding agent, then a scratch coat of mortar, then apply your render? basically, im askign how can you render over a painted surface? thanks in advance.
