Kirk WHY ARE You putting mesh. cause of cracks. isn't that for smooth FINISHES. and also can you spread 90 minute compound. on the chimney and Darby it flush
Good afternoon Josy dude, the client wanted the fiberglass mesh netting embedded as many plasterers before me recommended I felt to it was a good call too, thus we did it.
I would have saved a ton of time with a drywall compound, but this is not what they wanted, nor did I feel was the right call for a home they wished to preserve the intrity of an original plasters with.

Good afternoon John dude, it was a bit of a drag as my materials yard sold me the fiberglass mesh netting with the adhesive backing, I ordered the non-stick.

Hey Kirk, I’m not sure if you remember me or better yet, a comment I once posted in one of your many videos asking if you have or plan on making shirts for us fans to possibly purchase and you mentioned that you didn’t at the time but that it was a great idea. Anyway, I couldn’t help but notice you wearing a shirt with your slogan “Live long and plaster” on it and well, I guess my question is, are those for sale and how can I purchase one? Thanks in advance, Kirk .

Howdy Brian dude, you didn't say if it was interior or exterior.
For interior apply a bonding agent over the sheetrock and simply use a 20 to 40-minute drywall compounds such as Westpac's or Easy sand, both are sold at Home Depot, the 20 to 40 means that when mixed you have that time to use it or lose it as once mixed, it will set.

As we say in the UK, you can't make gold out of shit or you can't polish a turd but you can roll it in glitter!
I would staple that mesh to the ceiling rather than stick it personally. That ceiling looked dry as hell when you were spreading that plaster.
Howdy Gee Dude, this mesh cannot be stapled into a real plaster ceiling, even with an air pneumatic gun, besides if this were done in this manner, it would destroy the ability to bond correctly.
I show while explaining "my" methods, no oneis oblighed to do like, ole kirk.

I worked on a huge Ceiling above a carpark in a new Crown Court. Fireproof board, had to be meshed, some 400 metres in size, and there was no way we could set the scaffold height to cover the whole gang with one at 6' 3" and one at 5' 4", needless to say it was hard graft for all. As we applied the mix we double checked that it was the right stuff, boss said yes, so on it went.
The next morning I looked up from the ground, it looked odd, I climbed up, it really looked odd and felt really odd. Looking down the scaffold had a complete ceilings worth of mesh on it, all in one piece. Boss said he'd made a mistake, the mortar was wrong, so we had to do it again, luckily we were paid twice.
I've seen people staple it up, three months later rust spots appear, Stainless trowels are used as some mortars with quartz in will rip chunks out of a normal steel trowel which will later show up as minute rust spots.
Howdy Sex Dude, the key is a proper key, or Mechanical bond.
First, we made sure any and all loose plaster was off, and the remaining was solid and very clean of all dust, next we applied the best bonding agent to the ceiling,
(Never in the plaster mix,) then we skim coat with plaster that has a time set, in this case, I wanted 3 to 4 hours as we were not going to finish this ceiling on the same day as I usually do.
Then the mesh is embedded in the plaster which has a tremendous mechanical bond.
This method makes sure the adhesiveness is not compromised.
We never attach fiberglass mesh first, whether with staples, nails or the glue on the mesh, as this will kill most of the ability of the plaster to adhere, thus, the weight of the plaster with help from gravity will rip the mesh loose from any ceiling.
Best wishes,
Live long and plaster,

Hi Kirk. I'm going to begin plastering my rooms and ceilings in the next several months. I will be using Gold Bond gypsolite basecoat plaster and a finishing topcoat plaster. But needed to know how deep should the basecoat plaster on the walls and ceilings be? Should it be applied in one or two coats as well as the finishing plaster? Thanks for all your great videos they helped allot!
Thanks allot Kirk!
Hey Kirk. We started doing some plastering and it came out pretty good. My question is since we allowed the first coat to harden completely would it be fine to apply the 2nd coat of basecoat over it to fill the rest in and smooth out without using plaster weld or can we just apply the second coat on top? Thanks!
Howdy Noor dude, not sure what you're doing but two base coats are not needed, as a rule, a base coat then a finish coat is what most folks do.
As long as you can wet the basecoat with water by whatever means you have at your disposal another basecoat or finish coat will adhere much better to a moist or damp coat, a bonding agent is not necessary.
Some people use a Hudson sprayer to wet down plaster surfaces some use felt brushes I even bought a water hose in a couple times to mist the basecoat. It's never a good idea to apply a new coat over a super dry finish. However, it can be done.

Thanks again for the help and great videos. I have been working on my project now for a bit and can only find 'Structo-Lite base coat' locally. For some reason my suppliers can not get 'Imperial or Diamond base' and only 'Diamond finish'. We are used to that here. It is working out ok. Although, I still am seeing small blister type air pockets after the Diamond finish starts to set. We'll get through it no matter and the finish is working out great other than that. Really appreciate your time in replies and the hard work it takes to produce the video segments. Plaster on……
Hi Kirk — Love your videos. What's the closest US equivalent to Thistle Multi-Finish?
Howdy Tony dude, thank you.
I'd say Structo-lite, the big difference is the setting time where Thistle sets in about 90 minutes, Structo-lite requires about 3 to 5 hours depending on the material being plastered over.
Live long and plaster
Mastering Plastering for the beginner’s
Many thanks for the reply, Kirk. Interesting – it's my understanding that structo-lite is only a base plaster (can't be troweled smooth because of the perlite) while thistle MF is a finish plaster (no aggregate). I guess I need to re-think this!
Hi Kirk, great video, as always! I have one question though. Is it wise to apply the fiberglass on a wall or ceiling and then plaster over it? or is it better to embedded between two layers of plaster, like you did?
Howdy John, to get your answer you'd actually have to watch this video.

Teaching do’s and don’t of plastering and stucco work
Here’s what I do. I cut my lengths of fiber mesh and find a long clean floor space and lay it down then roll it up as tight and even as I can. With the plaster on I take the roll of fiber mesh and start to “press” it into the plaster with the help from another guy (you need to be really good friends at this part). Then one guy rolls it onto the ceiling and the other guy can use a broom and “sweep “ it into the plaster as it’s rolled out. Or it can be troweled in but what I think is best is using the green float to push the mesh into the plaster.
Howdy Steve, many ways to skin a cat.
Fact is, I did that also but used an 18-inch steel trowel to pack on the fiber mech on, under no circumstance would I consider using a green float unless someone stole all 30 of my trowels.
Our only drag was being sold the Fiber mesh with adhesive as I order the nonstick, however, this error added some fun to the application, if a fella can't adapt in this trade, he's in the wrong trade.

That's EXPERIENCE right there, folks.
Your memory is just like mine. You forget the names of stuff you use everyday.
Hi Kirk. Thanks for all the helpful videos. I do have a few specific questions before starting my first plastering project. We have a 115yo foursquare that still has all the plaster walls, though every room needs some level of plaster work. My wife and I are traditionalists, so replacing plaster with drywall is NOT an option. My first project room has been scraped to the scratch coat. About 65% of the veneer was bubbled or loose, so I decided to scrape it all. In doing so I found what looked like plaster of paris, drywall compound and bondo. The scratch coat is solidly affixed to the lath, but there are cracks running the length in each wall. After watching this video, I was wondering if
1) an embedded mesh for the entire surface of the wall would be ok or overkill or how to deal with cracks (clearly, it will recrack if the house is still settling),
2) a Structo-lite skim with a Diamond veneer is recommended,
3) do you really get a couple of hours working time with Structo-lite?
I can tackle one wall at a time, so I’d be working on a 15×9 area. As I stated, there are 8 rooms and 2 halls with some level of plaster work required. I don’t need to become professional, just proficient. I’ll have plenty of practice!
Thanks for any help.
Jeff
Evening Jeffery, If it were me I clean whatever plaster or gypsum you have their now, next apply a bonding agent. Larson's plaster weld is great.
Then go ahead and use your structo-lite, if it's cold it will take 4 hours to set, going over cement less than an hour.
They do sell accelerators so that it will set in a few minutes if that's is what you prefer.
Many guys in the trade will just add a handful of Portland cement plaster to it to set very fast.
Cheers, peace & harmony

Thank you for the reply. I'm not concerned about getting the project completed quickly….so a slow cure time is perfect. Plaster selection was based on cure time (Structo-lite) and finished texture (Diamond Finish). Does Diamond Veneer Basecoat have a similar cure time to Structo-lite? Is it ok to use Diamond Veneer Finish over Structo-lite?

Hi Kirk, can the structo lite be spread over drywall. Thanks and super great vid
Evening TrashDigger, absolutely, be aware a bonding agent needs to be applied to the sheetrock and that structo-lite adheres permanently
Plus it sometimes takes between 1 to 4 hours to set, this depends on many conditions.

Hi Kirk & co
A US company in New Zealand produces hydrated lime which i would like to use , nobody seems to use it for plasteting here ?
Could you advise on its usage/ limitations for interior and exterior work .
Thanks & you are the best !
Evening Johnathan, few use it here as it's expensive instead they use plaster additives, what that? who knows it's what the manufacturers say is as good as lime. I would recommend Diamond Finish as it has the most lime in it but it's a veneer for interior topcoats.
FYI, real lime plastering here sells for about 100 dollars a bag and is used exclusively for top coats or finishes, type in Eco Stucco, our video will come up, in the questions and answers many have suggested places that sell real lime at good prices.

Hi Kirk and Jay and Family – I really enjoy your informative videos.
I have two questions:
First the Project: I am the homeowner of a small Tudor cottage built in 1926. I am working on the hallway (1st & 2nd floors as well as stairway). The 3rd coat of plaster has come off the entire hall, there are a few places where I am down to the wood lath, but for the most part the scratch and brown coats are good. I painted the entire hall with Plaster-Weld and am using Struto-lite with fiber mesh followed by USG Diamond plaster for a finish.
Since I am doing this over a long number of weekends –
Q 1. I already applied Plaster-Weld to the entire hall but will not finish it for several weeks. Plaster weld instructions say it’s good for use from drying to 10 days. From your experience, if it is more than 10 days, do I need to apply more Plaster-Weld – and if so, are 2 coats a problem?
Q 2. If I put Structo-Lite on one weekend, do I need to wet it with water or paint with Plaster-Weld before I apply the Diamond coat the next weekend?
Thanks,
Don
Live long and plaster –
Evening Donald, Larson's Plaster weld like Larson's weld crete have to have a time limit, or people everywhere will sue them for many things.
Doubtfull it matters if it's ten days or a month, but if I were the owner of any of the bonding agents I too would have to say this as most have no clue as to what these cement plaster bonding agents relly do.
Plus some folks are so full of ignorance and mendacity, they seek someone else to blame if their DIY project fails.
I would not worry about the ten-day limit if you get my drift.

Hi Kirk & Jay,
Thanks for getting back to me so promptly. Now I can move ahead with my project.
I've watched many of you videos numerous times. Watching them repeatedly reveals techniques that you can't get just watching them once. Sometimes you do things that are so routine to you that you don’t mention them in the video – like avoiding spreading Structo-Lite outside the lath patch, which I found out leads to it drying chalky.
I probably would have attempted this job without seeing your videos, but it would have turned out far worse than it already is!
Keep posting you videos. Now I watch them for fun!
Thanks again,
Don
Hey Kirk, still learning all I can before fixing the walls in my apt here in Mexico City. I thought you were so brave using that pool trowel; I'm feeling nervous just using my little repair spatula filling holes before the important part of getting the skim coat on. In my education, I just came across this guy in Sonora Mexico who uses his huge wooden hawk to get his skim coat onto the wall! Thought I'd share with you and your viewers for those who are interested in seeing it too! Keep on being amazing, love your channel maestro! Here is the link: https://youtu.be/lsiDiVQBw4A?t=352

Really enjoy your videos, the information you provide is invaluable. I've got a bare brick chimney that's approximately 90 years old that is purely decorative. I'd like to create that old world exposed brick look with it. As of yet I haven't seen anything like this in your YouTube library. Have you done this sort of thing or have any advice on how to do it?
The lumps in that ceiling smh
Evening Nick, what lumps?

@Kirk Giordano plastering Inc. i don't think he watched the whole thing. probably didn't stick around to watch you embed the mesh.
What if you leave the mess rolled up and roll out a little at a time. I think you will like better
Kirk I'm I'm a Plasterer from Southern California we use the mesh when we do ceilings we take a measurement and then we cut all the pieces of mesh, and then we roll the mesh tight all the pieces and then put the mudd on the ceilings and then 1 by1 we roll out the mesh 1 guy rolling out the mesh and make sure he doesn't get to far ahead, but when the pieces of are rolled up the guy rolling out the mesh can also knock it down if he gets a little to far ahead, the other knocking it down with his trowel
So what’s the mesh for exactally what’s the science behind it
Hey Kirk, we have been using this method and it has been working great. Thanks for the videos. I have been using Plaster Weld, do you dilute your plaster weld? Plaster weld is not readily available in my area, I have to order online. From one of your previous videos you said Quikrete is not preferred because of the drying time and Larsons is a stronger product. I am just doing this on walls, not ceilings, do you think Quikrete will give me similar results as plaster weld? Thanks!
that was cool, after watching your video s i started using Big Tongas trowels by Curry and love it . that is something that i have implemented into my every day plastering after 30 years of it, so thanks!!!
so good. thank you.
