Howdy guys and gals, in this video I will try and explain in simple layman’s words that even my great grandma can understand.
Jason and I receive many emails per month asking why we’re using the typical stucco netting which is either 17 or 18 gauge wire in our area, basically the east bay or San Fransisco Bay area, such as Oakland and Berkely along with all of California.
The diamond mesh or 3.4 metal mesh as both names refer to the same mesh wire can and is used in many parts of the country, we often use this mesh wire also in California except for soffits (ceilings) or odd circumstances, can a fella use this diamond mesh for a whole house?
Excellent question, glad you asked, yes, but it will cost a lot more in cash to purchase and is not as strong as a continuous roll of lath, the stucco/plastering netting which comes in rolls of 3 feet by 150 feet.
FYI, the 20 gauge wire is primarily used for chicken coops or setting tiles in this order some sites just say it’s a flimsy version and can be used for stucco, wrong!
I have witnessed some plastering contractors at plastering materials yards ordering it for stucco, these guys are soon out of business as this fine and inexpensive wire causes the stucco to hairline, (crack) big time over the years, thus the stucco guys who think, “Man, I saving money and making great time will be in trouble when the lawsuits come pouring in.”
Be safe and use or make certain your stucco dude is attaching the proper netting or mesh wire.
FYI, most stucco and concrete mixes use Portland cement as a binder, for example.
Concrete mixes rocks with their Portland cement with clean water to make concrete,
Stucco mixes sand with Portland cement with clean water also,
to create stucco.
most common stucco issue hairline cracking, Stucco walls expand when hot then a shrink when dryer condition return”
Just plaster it, whether it ends up good or bad it was an adventure
