My son Jason and I are also participants in the Amazon Services LLC Associates Program.

With our Amazon affiliates links below, Jason and I took the liberty of researching the best tools at the lowest cost used by us. This removes the guesswork for you out of buying plastering and other stucco tools.
Amazon quickly provides this luxury. Usually, two day delivery with Prime right to your front door… makes a person downright lazy, but happy. 👍
Plus, this helps support us a bit so we can keep making these teaching videos. Below are just some of the tools, hawks, and trowels we recommend through Amazon – check out www.stuccoplastering.com/tools for all our recommendations.🎆🎁Remember, once on the Amazon page you can buy not just the tools we recommend but anything your heart desires.

BTW, I'm Jason, the beard behind the camera, and also a licensed contractor. My dad and I have switched to powerful, modern, and long-lasting all battery-operated Milwaukee tools for good reasons. Take the Dual Chemistry M18 Job-site Radio. For me, this is one of my favorite tools for any job site: http://amzn.to/3aVmD1T. I plug my cell phone in the top, then listen commercial-free to my music all day... or my dad's favorite artists. 😏🤔 We turn it off when filming. 🎥
We've also replaced our corded break out tool for the Milwaukee M18 FUEL Rotary Hammer: https://amzn.to/3ecdjsy. Here's a video about why we love it: -https://youtu.be/TdsGwupieXE
We exclusively use this battery-operated mortar drill - it's a drag searching for outlets, unrolling a hundred-foot extension cord, and winding it back up: https://amzn.to/2OzBxS0

Kirk I have a question about texture coating over stucco. People claim it's better than stucco , maintenance free, and color last without fading. They also say it's say it acts as insolation. What are your thought can you help me please. Thank you

Good evening George dude, below is a video that answers your question, for this project I was working for a quality painting contractor who wanted to match the original finish on his painted home, thus just a texture and he will paint.

Howdy Kirk. Some of the guys where I live claim that fine sand stucco can't be applied to external walls because it will crack, fall off, etc. I've been watching your videos since God knows when, and I've learned that stucco adheres to anything that's clean, primed, etc. SBSMF is a beautiful finish, which can obviously be used externally. I think the grit of the sand won't prevent the stucco from adhering and lasting a while, but since I am no expert, I'd like to see what you think.

    Keep up the great work.

The fine finish would be adhered to a sound, adequate base coat. The strong base, provides the fine finish with the base it needs to stay looking good over the years, and not crack, fall off etc…

The base coat is much thicker 3/4"-1" and applied over some type of lath which provides it with a mechanical key, or bond to the structure, or if it is a masonry structure, it could be bonded directly to a properly prepared surface of block, concrete, brick, etc.. Even directly over masonry, it is advisable to apply a basecoat first as well, although it can be a single browning coat, vs a scratch and brown over lath, the finish is not applied by itself.

Bottom line is, your finish coat needs a stucco base coat to provide the strength for a lasting installation. Installed in this manner in accordance with the mfg specifications it is perfectly acceptable and long lasting outdoors. Also, it can be applied over an existing stucco exterior, with a painted surface, over a diluted bonding agent, in a finish only application. In this case though, the existing stucco base coat is there satisfying the base requirements, so you don't want to make the false assumption that it is being applied to some random surface, by itself just with a bonding agent, there is still a base coat.

Also it is important to note that the Smooth, fine sand finish you are referring to, is applied in a two pass sequence, as in a tight coat is scratched into the surface, and then it is immediately doubled back up over top with more material while still fresh, bringing it out to full thickness. If a smooth sand finish is not applied like this, it can also not look good, and or crack and fail.

So, yes, maybe if your friends have applied the finish not keeping in mind the limitations above, they very well could have experienced less than adequate performance. But that is not the finishes fault, its theirs for not knowing how to apply the material right, and then blaming its lack of performance on that.

Good evening Gandalf Dude, i have applied every sand known to man from fine olympia to felton plaster sands and all the rest including clean coarse washed and top sand both have large aggregates or grits, these sands have absolutely nothing to do with falling off the walls, instead they are all used for different finishes and or strengths.
Your right a wll has to be very clean, and often a full strength bonding agent has to be applied such as Larson's Weld crete, as nothing adheres to dust.
