Hello all, I would advise all for a job this size don’t even think about using any pre-bagged stucco that just needs water. That will cost you a fortune and take much too long.
I’d order a couple yards of sand deliver and at least thirty bags of either Hansons Lehigh premium cement plaster or 15 bags of plastic cement with 15 bags of common cement plaster.
If anyone considers applying this much stucco, click below to watch the three videos I have personally hand-picked for you.
For every bag, you add three-time the sand. Mix with a towable mixer, not the barrel type.

Kirk try rendering ( applying mud ) from right to left (left to right for southpaws). What we call "Setting" ( think you call it veneer, skimming …)left to right. When rendering you will always be pulling into your previous render, basically reducing the amount dropping onto the floor considerably. I weep when i see the render falling on the floor. Love your vids, from another plasterer that never stops learning.

Howdy Soup in a basket me fellow plasterer,
I hate to say it but I have had to let guys go who had the habit of dropping more mud than they could apply,
I used to scream sounds like cows shitting on flat rocks, man that makes for a long day as I also do clean up and nothing worse that having to pick up plaster from journeymen who haven't learned how to keep the mud or muck on the walls.
On a radius I can understand dropping some mud as the trowel is used diagonally but on flat wall where a trowel is used horizontally there's no excuse for dropping mud.

Howdy Chilly Willie Dude, yes, but this skim coat procedure would first still have to be completed, Stuco-flex like all the acrylic's can only be applid only an eighth of an inch, and yes some acrylic's are garbage products intended in making money and not giving a quality product, Stuco-flex on the other hand as well as many other acrylic's are the best of the best and will simply expand or flex when movement occurs without hairlining.

Does Rapid Set FIBER or another fiberglass admix work well for preventing those hairline cracks from forming? I found removing all soil and digging down to bedrock or at least a 'false bedrock' layer when building the wall is pretty effective, but that's clearly not practical everywhere.

    • Kirk Giordano plastering Inc. says

      June 3, 2017 at 6:39 pm

Howdy 3 Alame Dude, we applied the strongest plaster that is sold in America, but this will not stop this wall from moving if it pushed in the opposite direction for months at a time by the weight of hundreds of tons of rain water, It will perhaps move only as much of an eighth of an inch, buht when drier conditions return, Thus Voila a hairline crack may occur which BTW, is not the end of the world.
This wall did indeed have a french drain system installed and was engineered to the max, however nature does not care about these facts.

why didn't you use a go devil ? My only knowledge of one or experience is from what you teach us,so with that being said I would think this would be a perfect opportunity to use one or would it be the worst time to use one cause the work of it would break you down from such a long wall ?Thank you for sharing

Howdy Billy, excellent question, both Jason and Nathan grabbed our go-devel, however as we did not pressure wash this wall, the homeowners workers did, thus I wanted to skim as tight as possible to get the mechanical bond necessary, If I had pressure washed this wall you betcha I would have used my go- devils.

It's just man against nature, nature always has the upper hand.
Besides just because this wall has some hairline cracks does not mean it won't be standing as is for a few centuries, old kirk will be worm food long before this wall has issues.

It was just statement that expansion joints would reduce hairline cracks but would't make it any stronger it is just cosmetic issue.
We build retain walls with expansion joints but maybe because our outside temperature varies more than 55 degrees Celsius so that's why also temperature movement is bigger or another reason is they are usually prefabricated part that is made on factory and transported to site so there needs to be joints.

I embed eifs mesh in one coat and scratch and brown and silicone hairline cracks before topping with dryvit. I recommend this method for crack suppression. My houses 10 years later have very minimal or no cracking in the Rockies. Anyways thanks and cheers.

OK Kirk, question, maybe not having so much to do with retaining walls. In my basement , which doesn't leak since mortared the joints the the marble stairs meet the brick wall, the is a combination of wall surfaces. I am going to leave the stone wall alone as it looks good but 2/3rds are what look to be a 2 coat floated finish. The front of house had taken damage from gas pipe reinstall and water damage. I have cleaned it down as best I can and think I should be able to get away with watering down the stucco that is already there and scratch coating with a Portland sand mix with some acrylic additive in it just to help out. P.S. The house is close to 100 years old and doesn't move anymore as I have been here 10 years myself and no cracks/leaks have developed (except for the hurricane induced one in which I described fixing. It would seen to me as porous as the masonry on the wall is already it should form a good suction with scratch coat…am I all off base here?

    Thanks.

Howdy Mars dude, you just need a skim coat like what we did in this video, one coat to the desired depth, FYI, an acrylic is a finish coat which goes on the skim coat or the base coat 30 days after that coat cures, you don't mix acrylics with stucco, If you do you'll screw up the mix.

Thanks Kirk, that's good news for me. It is interesting that the adhesive/additive product I have says use in base and everywhere else. I am going to take your word over the product's info…I'm hardly surprised when I see misleading info on products, some will say anything to have you purchase more and more.

P.S. I just reread my initial post and am shocked at the amount of errors in grammar. I swear I wasn't drunk when I wrote it out 🙂 I probably wasn't wearing my glasses at time and need bifocals but refuse to do it yet, it makes me feel I'm getting too old too fast I guess! Thanks again and peace brother.

I do however get pain in my back but this video has taken most of it out in two shorts weeks, https://youtu.be/4BOTvaRaDjI
it appears I have been walking and working with a way not conductive to healthy back strengths.

Nice video ! I enjoy watching and learning from all your videos .. I however have a question .. it would be perfect if you can tell me how to fix this problem I have on my stucco/ mortar wall that I just did..
First off .. I put mesh on wall.. then I went to Home Depot and bought stucco/mortar mix (sakrete). I used 5 .. 80lb bags for this job .. my problem is the color .. I mixed color cement powder into my stucco/mortar mix but for some reason when the wall dried it does not look good some spots are darker than others .. I definitely added an extra spoon or two of cement color powder when I was mixing my stucco .. now I need to paint the wall .. I want to paint it but I am afraid that it will peel in the long run .. what paint do you suggest I use and should I use seal or not ? Thank you

Howdy savvas, I would recommend a good primer such as a premium quality, exterior elastomeric coating, FYI, Kelly Moore's sell's this stuff,
BTW, if your color finish is chalky, hose it down with a water hose well as nothing sticks to a dusty surface at least not for long.

The cracks are not stress cracks from pressure of the backfill. They are shrinkage cracks caused when the concrete cured. The wall has insufficient control joints, so cracking was inevitable. Same principle applies with any concrete structure.

Howdy Rok, no, as the fiberglass mesh will alow the moister or rain to be absorbed into the wood as stucco is not always waterproof.
Thus the wood would expand and the stucco pop right off.
One must apply waterproof paper and wire, then stucco.

Good morning Mrs. Wallace, not really as the only difference between stucco and concrete is the aggregate, meaning both use Portland "cement" mixed with water, however, stucco is mixed with sand while concrete is mixed with different size rocks.

Good Morning UK dude, not all American truck are good for work, I could name some models that really suck, however this is a rated PG site, so I'll stick with the positives, the older fords are the real beast of work.
This one is an 89 but has less than 70,000 miles and runs and hauls about 3 to 4 tons, Awesome for it's size,
This truck is not too big as I wouldn't be able to park on most projects and not too small that I can't load everything I need for a job and then some.

First you need a bonding agent to seal the block, otherwise you will have problems down the road. Next your scratch coat and if the block wall is on an outside wall, you should use water proof cement, both scratch and finish coat.

Yes, but you MUST, use a bonding agent first then the scratch coat, let it dry, then the finish coat. If you don't use the bonding agent, in a few years you will get discoloring, bleeding, scaling spots, hollow spots and more and in most instances stucco falling off the wall is patches and hollow spots.

Mixing mud, floating and being the lower guy on the wall, I hated it all untill I got paid and stepped back to be proud of what we did. Good job Kirk. 99% of people always forget to mist the wall when starting! Main reason why u always see the joint lines. You guys killed it here !

Your right the necessity of creating a mechanical suction bond is more important than getting it done, as no mechanical bond created by the water misting all our pretty work falls off in under ten years then old Kirk has to go back and plaster it again, but this time for free.
Plus your spot on, the joints do ghost through, you have a true plasterers gift for knowing stuff that matters.

There are no products I'm aware of that will stop a wall or slab from moving in the long run, Not Rapid set's "cement all" which has a strength of (9,000 PSI) when set, almost 3 times as strong as cement, nor La Habra's "Polybond which is great for sticking to anything cementitious, or any caulking, or even top quality epoxcy.
I tell folks if a hundred ton wall is going to move, nothing will stop this action.

Great video. You make it so matter-of-fact and doable for everyone.
You are so right, drainage is really the most important part of retaining wall construction. It's importance can not be stressed!
No matter how you engineer the wall, you are betting on overturing failure or slippage.
I recommend something like Keystone blocks. If it fails all you have is some dirt, stone, geotextile and blocks to pick up as opposed to a full on concrete wall, footing demolition and rebuild.
I'm sure I'll get hell for this, but to each his own.
    Again, kudos on the video.
    Enjoy.

This is not a true statement. First plasterers work inside, stucco applicators work outside. Plasters work with plaster not stucco material. Stucco and plasterers use square trowels and don't spill their material on the ground, after all who uses a swimming pool trowel larger than their hawk and spill all that mud on the ground, it drives me crazy to watch someone who thinks he is a plasterer using the wrong tools incorrectly. He also should have used a bonding agent on the concrete wall as well, this would also would have afforded him more time to do a better job with less spillage. The man shoveling the mud onto the mud board is doing it all wrong as well as he can injured his muscles, he should be standing right next to the side of the wheel barrow and with small wrist movement and no strain on the back at all onto the board with a smaller spade shovel. As a licensed plasterer for over thirty five years it pains me to watch his videos and see him brag about how good he is, when in fact I would not hire him for one of my crews at all.

Masking materials are cheap. i would have ran a typical 12/200 roll of viqueen and never gotten the black top dirty. prep work is crucial. Just a note The work its well described. love the work. But theres always room for improvement. Dirtyness='s backcharge. plus more time to clean up.

I figure you already know, just encouraging you to not be afraid to add an additional ad somewhere in the middle of a 20 min video. In a way it can break a video up, which can be a good thing. I am use to seeing the ads in videos and I like the idea that you have the potential to earn more income when I view an ad. Either way, keep up the good work! FYI, it's way too much work to drop and allow to stain then clean staining tar.

Howdy Steven, Dude, that's might weird but stranger things have happened.
5 years ago I had a little bitty so-called spider bite that created a bullseye on my lower back which had to be lanced, no fun, then was given antibiaotics for it,.
A week later I had another bullseye on my belly, I tried the Stalone stuff and lanced it my self but had to resort to a Lemon which I used as a practice to slice with a new razor to try and understand how much pressure to apply with a razor to make the cut necessary to squee out the toxic poisen myself this took over an hour, that too was no fun, the doc said it was a spider bite, was it who knows but old kirk will rick no subsctrbers to another so called spider bite.

I still haven't decided whether I should do them with concrete block or form board concrete. Either way, I sense I'll have to plaster them.

If I had not covered the tar, I would not have got paid instead the oner would have called the cops on me and had me arrested.

Thank you for this video. Extremely knowledgeable. I am an Engineer working on a similar project where the existing stucco has begun to peel away. Once we have the existing stucco pressure washed off, would you recommend installing a new bonding agent? Also, my project is located in an salt air environment. Would any of the cement/stucco requirements change because of the corrosive environment?

Good afternoon Michael, If your in a cold climate or by the sea which is salty.
I would emphasize, top of the line pressure washing with much force, then apply a proper bonding agent and plaster as normal.
no stucco or bonding agent will stay on for hundreds of years if the bond is not the best possible under all conditions.

like the work, but we wouldnt get away with that in ireland. We wpuld have to leave it straight using a 6ft straight edge and rubbed up with a wooden float then sponged. That way it doesnt show shadows when the sun comes out

Aloha Fixit, fair enough, so in other words when a client tells you he wants a hand-troweled old world stucco finish, you say, no?
But instead, give him a modern day wall straight and perfect.
These finishes are okay if your around 20 to 30, but some folks have different tastes and find this finish to be an expression to scream out to the world, "I am wealthy," while this is okay, often mature clients desire shadows and variations in color for a more charming effect.

Hi Kirk and family ,i have just a couple of things i have learned from 30 years of construction is that when you work with concrete you have to control the curing time so it don't cure to quick because if it cures too quick it will crack due to shrinkage ,so we have to maintain a certain amount of moisture content until it is cured (from green stage to cured) and when i was an apprentice bricklayer i was told not too mix the mortar (mud) to long because it would introduce too much air into the mixture compromising the strength ,i really enjoy watching your videos i love to learn more about the use of materials and the method of application, keep em coming 🙂

Do some plastering . Easy money . In
Australia we have to rule every wall flat with a straight edge within 3 millimetres . Float and then sponge to give it a completely flat look even in the side light there is no blemishes , hard work . I like these rolling walls with a hacienda look , kinda like how they do it in Venice . Looks cool .

Your ripping the guts out of cement by using a sponge float!

    Thanks Kirk
I refinish recap concrete as part of my trades. I ve been literally pacing the floors because a customer approached us when we were working at her home. She was around us quite a bit. She texted me after work she is covid positive.
That's another story and I pray for her and my crew.
Needless to say I am anxious and can't work until my crew and me get our tests results to clear to go back to work.

I started watching trades videos and landed on your family's videos.

It calmed me and lifted my spirits
I too like my trades and my family of brothers I get to work with.

Thank you for sharing and God bless your family and crews
