Rendering a finish

September 24, 2016 By Stucco Plastering 87 Comments

Rendering a finish on a newly installed atm machine.

Howdy guys and gals, kirk here you favorite stucco and rendering professional with some tip to help you understand your number one investment your home, or what we do for businesses.

Question: does anyone understand why a cementitious finish will never match a painted surface????
Easy question, glad you asked, when rains the painted surface will not darken however the cementitious finish will, creating a goofy appearance while wet, thus, this wall will have to be painted as written up in their proposal to me. Our job was to match the finish with a cement plaster that would harden within an hour and be strong so no one writes their name in it.
The cement plaster we used is what large companies build bridges and sky scraper with, it’s crazy strong.
Or to say it more professionally about 4,700 PSI strong. hardened and stronger than most foundations and or walkways.

FYI, although we make applying stucco or plaster appear easy, it usually take about 10 to 15 years of hands on experience to understand how to apply Stucco/Plaster properly.

therefor, make certain you hire the right plastering and or rendering plaster company in your area for Rendering a finish.
However With a bit of help from me ‘Kirk” your favorite Rendering a finish, Professional, this video will be your guild to any and all questions about your most common home repair issues or as in this case commercial repairs

Rendering a finish to me, the render dude, explains that material knowledge is 70% of being a well rounded stucco guy, the other 30% is application if a company can spread one material they most likely can spend all materials, the understanding of what these rendering cement plasters can do is up to the plastering contractor to add the time in to understand what each cement plaster is produced for.

Howdy Spencer, you did not miss much I did have to take pictures to send them to another state in order to show my work and get paid, it was very close in color but on the money in texture, this was what I got paid for, not matching the color, when we got there I simply told Jason (my Son and camera man) who mixed my mud, look at the color and add whatever amount of the white cement plaster you feel is necessary to come as close as possible to the color until they paint, as it is a bank, and our work or this wall should be somewhat presentable until the cure time before painting from corner to corner.

    1. On interior imperial and diamond plastering, on the first coat that goes in between the keys on a repair or even a full open lath wall, I forget…help me out here. Do you wet the lath first? I thought I heard you say to wet it first. Or, do you use plaster weld over the wood , or both? Thanks pal.

Howdy mate, the keys must be super clean when in doubt apply a bonding agent as this bonding agent is mostly water, thus the water will remove most dust invisible to the human eye.
FYI, unless the cedar wood lath is new, I use a bonding agent, mushrooming thorough the keys holds well but I want the wood to also hold my gypsums.

Kirk, but I don't want to disappoint you as I have been plastering sheet rock for over 20 years now and I have become extremely fast and very good at it. Here is a big disappointment for you – I must admit that I cannot master that technique of using those trowels you use. I am trying to start using your system and I have watched you very and attentively – you said very good things about people who use joint compound and let me tell you something I feel that the blade is too far away from my hand for me to control the material being applied.

I realise why do you mean when you keep telling us that you have many years – it is not something that anybody could just take up and do themselves – do you think that I could use your veneer plastering system with the common taping knife? Or do you think that I will eventually get it and learn how to use the Marshall trowels for plaster

Howdy mate, no worries, Jason my son prefers our 20×5 as he has the hand eye coordination, personally I prefer the smaller 16×5,
I tell most to start with the square 12×5 and work up to the 14×5, it simply takes practice, then one day you think to yourself man I need a bigger trowel to save on time.
Or keep on keepin on with a blade. The whole idea is to use trowels that you're comfortable with.

I'm more of a stone guy but trying to get better at stucco. I've done sand finished work with my old boss before but he always added sand to the bag of finish cement and we always used a decent amount of water when sponge floating….. Just did one on my own and didn't add sand. The cement felt very pasty and also set up super quick on the wall. When I tried to sponge I couldn't get any texture. I wet the wall but not sure if I did enough and ended up really having to wet my sponge.. Why did I struggle so much?

this will accelerate the set time from 20 minutes to 5 or 10 minutes.

    Kirk and family,
Thank you for giving me hope when there was none for my “selfish” little out door man-cave. long story short, I need to do my own stuff because I just couldn’t afford the luxury with one of my kids getting permanently sick the week we went to closing. I made 2 walls to hold and weather protect an outdoor TV in a enclosed pool area. My project will never look as good as your work, but again thank you for getting me close enough! I don’t think I’ll be able to watch all your videos, but I observe everything you do from mixing (just using Lowe’s stuff for now) to how you bang the mud to the hawk from the trowel, and do corners, etc. Thank you. Cement work is daunting if nobody introduces you to it and once I saw your videos and saw you are for real, I started watching other videos to lay cinderblock. Nothing funnier than being able to watch outdoor tv, 365 in south Florida. Just sad I had to take the tv down for now to do the job right.

What texture sand is included with the Eisenwall? Straight out of the bag is it 20/30? Or did you add sand? I have some patches to do and normally use stucco patch by rapid set. It includes 16/20 sand. Does the eisenwall include coarse sand? Thanks Kirk

Howdy Kanes, I would recommend Rapid set stucco, sold at all home depots and lowes and many other hardware stores, they have ten-pound and 25-pound boxes and of course bigger bags for larger jobs. This is called Rapid Set Stucco, it is indeed sand of 16/20 or the heavy sand.

Never done this before, am trying to replicate what a friend did on my retaining wall. I have a horizontal area (4"-6" wide, 250 linear feet) to stucco. It's going on formed cement. Advice?

Kirk, do you know anything about adding a crushed marble dust finish to a stucco wall? I'm building a new house and I want it to be like my old house (1916) which had a finish of this type. It looked like they threw or sprayed crushed marble onto the wall after it was done, OR maybe put the crushed marble in the portland for a finish coat and then washed off some of the portland to end up with clean little tiny crystals of shiny marble. I've never seen it replicated but I do see reference to the supplies for it in cement and plastering books from the 1910s and 1920's. Any advice greatly appreciated. This is a finish may have been common 100 years ago but subsequent owners of these buildings usually ruin it by painting over it.

Evening PMC Driver, venetian plaster is made with marble dust. The finish you're referring to is very common in the UK, but not so much here in the USA.
It's called a pebble dash finish where seashells, glass or other decorative stones are added to the finish coat, then thrown on as the finish coat.

Hey Kirk, how long do you have to float it before it’s too long? Curious how far I should go with applying the coat before going back and floating it
