Lime is healthy, Lime is Life, so says the smart people.

Does Lime Plastering really have human health benefits?

Hello ambitious guys and gals, who are interested in learning about how to apply lime plaster yourself.
Can you learn to apply lime plaster to your choice of living spaces from watching a video?
Most of our viewers say they not only can, but did, all saved cash, plus had fun and created a sense of euphoria as any physical exertion creates oxygen thus stimulate those feel good dopamine neurons, naturally, especially after viewing your own efforts and realizing, wow, I din’t know I was so talented.

Lets review, save cash, get a great workout, create a sense of accomplishment, what more in life does a righteous person desire? If old kirk can do it, so can you.
Then you can say “no problemo” or even “yeah Baby” I did this repair myself.

Jason and I brought also brought to you a bit of history as well as little known benefits of Lime top coats, Lime render finishes and or Lime plaster base coats.
This video was over 2 hours long so Jason did some magic and removed half as to hopefully not bore the crap out of you, what? Too late?
Well, its to tough to compress 10,000 years of history into a short video.
FYI, although this video although a bit longer than intended may open your eyes to a different side of all natural and Real Lime Plastering which originated from Europe.

I usually try and go into details about tools and their use, plus explain and show a variety of other useful Lime plastering techniques.

For those folks who don’t know if your plaster is made of real lime, spray some vinegar on it if it fizzes like a soda pop, it’s real lime.

Old Kirk says, material knowledge is 70% of being a well rounded plasterer,
The other 30% is application.

FYI, my son Jason, contacted many companies from Europe, by the time the dust settled cost was about 1,000 dollars just to have the bags shipped, plus would have taken 40 days, so the bags I bought from my pal Cy at Eco stucco located in Marin, ca. were less expensive plus he has a large showroom with many examples and a nice guy.
I don’t get paid to advertise products as I don’t wish to feel obligated to companies, therefore, I’d make a lousy politician.

The acidity of vinegar helps to neutralize the high pH of lime. So, I would rinse with vinegar and follow up with the coconut oil.

As lime is caustic, you should wash it with something acidy, to neutralize the pH – vinegar or lemon juice can do the job -. After that rinse it with plenty of water.

Howdy Mary, sure one can also attach metal lath, such as Rib Lath Or 3.4 mesh wire nettings, but then these stucco nettings would require a base coat.

Well done Kirk good to look at your films again, it's been a while. Speaking as a south-west English lime putty slaker and plasterer here, I never expected to see/hear you talking about lime plaster and singing it's praises. Lime walls also absorbs carbon dioxide. If you slake your own quicklime it will double in quantity. I have used it straight away mixed 3:1 with sand but mostly it's kept to mature for a few months. The magnesium board you talked about was pretty useless when lime plaster stick to it, it came off when you bent the board a bit, there was no key so they stuck multi-finish and it stuck fine, only problem is that it seals in the moisture absorbent board so it cannot absorb..

Good evening Peter, always nice to hear from the real experts in the UK.
I didn't know lime absorbed Carbon Dioxide, I could have used it in a car I drove 30 years ago as it omitted so much Carbon Dioxide it put me to sleep if I didn't drive with the windows down. Had I know what was causing my issues then, I would have driven the car off a cliff without me in it, of course.

Ha ha, too kind Captain Kirk. I watched a film of you in the top of your house putting lime on the walls to help absorb the moisture. I don't usually put lime skim onto plasterboard/drywall but it does stick…….ish, normally I'll use wood laths, water reed or elephant grass which is like bamboo.
Lime walls can also give you better acoustics and I think the space is slightly warmer too. I recently added molasses to a coarse mix of lime putty mortar (2 & 1/2 sharp sand + 1/2: soft/builders sand + 1 lime putty + about 2% molasses to a mixer load), if you add too much it turns the mix to soup. But that basic mix without the molassis is lovely and sticky and great for ceiling work on lath.
I had read in the 'Millars' 1870 book on plastering that they used Jaggery (sugar) to stave off frost in India.
In January or February we will be in minus temperature here in the South of England so it will be interesting to see if it's okay.I've taken off the 3'' thick cement render off a front wall of a village house so that the water trapped in the cob and rubble-stone work can evaporate away. All I have rendered are the window and door surrounds where I have also pushed in cut, straight and flat clay roof tiles to build out the mortar and everything but 9 patches of cob has been left uncovered for the winter time to breath until it's warmer next year when I can finish the job. Happy Xmas to you and your gang.

Quick question, how does the lime permeate the moisture through gypsum plasterboard you have fitted?

I applied a bonding agent to the sheetrock before applying the basecoat. As I get no moister upstairs the sheetrock will outlast me.

After the DECOLIME set, we came back and hand-applied the last 2 final coats Of MURALIME. After the 2 layers of MURALIME had a chance to set, I used a hard plastic trowel to buff, polish, and create some highlands.

Thank you so much for your reply. It means so much. So as I am understanding your journey and it’s now 2020, the shower video with the arch was the same materials. So, even though it has the Eco (progressives) name which is a turn off, it’s an old world lime product that should be easily had in the USA. Olive ash if wanted to seal it? I saw a woman who is not a plaster person or anything of trade standards from colorado had a “distributor ship” of that product . So this is confirmation that this is the one? Even though it felt different in other sales perspectives? I live on the border of St Louis in Illinois near the bluffs of the Mississippi and we have the greatest lime rich quarry’s on God earth and I know the owners. So, just seeing if we have somethin here we can get together on since it seems to have been recognized.

Hey Kirk, wondering what your advice would be on using lime plaster, or any kind of plaster technique to do me entire kitchen. I’ve framed the kitchen counters and shelves using concrete board, and I’d like to go over all of it with a few coats of plaster or lime to give it an old Mediterranean feel. I’d like to avoid poured concrete counter tops if at all possible. Would rather it be imperfect and white or beige color.

It was ok for a little while, Then the paint started cracking and the skim coat plaster got wet, i poked around and notice the plaster was soaking and it was not coming from above. What can i do to stop the paint cracking and letting in moisture in my shower room ceiling, this will be my third go at fixing it and its rather frustrating. cheers from Scotland

Howdy Thomas, Artex to my understanding is gypsum, what happens when steam or water hit gypsum?
      excellent question, glad you asked.
The moister turns the gypsum back to Gowey gypsum.
If it's painted with a quality Paint such as Sherman Williams at a whopping 80 bucks a gallon and it's designed for waterproofing this won't happen, naturally, you need an exhaust fan to help get the steam out.
If you like me, I shower with the hottest water until the whole tank is gone chilly, this steam will continue to beat you up unless your primer and paint are top-notch.

Fix the actual moisture & don't band-aid the symptoms. Additionally, you have stack effect that brings up all the bad air in the house & it's trying to rise up and out those skylights. The skylights waste energy and can over-heat in the summer and add additional air leakage = more stack. If you want to make a solid improvement, try Panasonic Whisper fan with humidistat and/or motion sensor. Lime moves the meter just a little on top of managing all those other problems. Love the lime, but it's not the biggest problem nor the best solution. Love the aesthetic of your work, just add some building science.

Every Panasonic Whisper fan we have ever installed is so quiet (<0.3 sones) you can barely hear it run, unless it's on full speed, and then it's still extremely quiet. Contact Panasonic. It's the cheap builder fans that we absolutely stay away from. Well I guess I should look into it. No beer, wine or any substances for that matter in my body. Gave it up long time ago, maybe I should get on the lime plaster. Couldn’t hurt. Maybe I could start working like you guys!! Wow your entire family is hard working and motivated. It’s inspirational to see a family business where everyone truly pitches in and work so hard together. It’s refreshing these days we live in a world that is gotten very far away from that. Those kids are lucky that they’ve got a father That has provided them with a skill set that will always put food on their table. Each one of them can find their own path roll the dice and see what this world has to offer for them. Worst case scenario they’ve always got a solid foundation plastering to fall back on. You should be proud of yourself beautiful family you got there keep working hard thank you for all the free information and tips of your trade. You provide the community with a great service

I've been plastering for 20 years and the two coat system for interior space is still the best. Cement base coat and the finish or float coat is only slacked lime, sand and white cement.

Hi Kirk. I live in Japan and am doing an addition to my home here. In Japan, they use a waterproof board similar to thin plywood for applying plaster to the exterior of homes. This board is textured with a black waterproofing material. The texture helps hold the plaster. The seams between each board are waterproofed, too. There is no lathing being used. I'm wondering if you have any experience with this type of material; and if so, what do you think of it? BTW, I love your videos. I am learning a lot.

@Kirk Giordano plastering Inc. Thank you so much for replying to my question. I'll take a picture of this black cement board. The seams are sealed with the same material that the boards are made from. Actually, this material is sold in the States now. They use it for waterproofing the lower section of exterior walls that get hit by the rain. I love your videos, and I will be attempting cement plastering on an addition that I am doing. I'll start on the backside of the house first to get some practice. I purchased a lot of the equipment that you recommended. Looking forward to applying your techniques. Keep rocking it, Kirk!

@ハイルデイヴィット  Morning my friend, I don't know if this system it may be possible, however, and unless the seams do indeed somehow mechanically touch and thus weld themself to each other, there must be another way to seal them in order to waterproof.

@Kirk Giordano plastering Inc. Thank you so much for all your help! I really appreciate all your help. Here is a video on YouTube of Japanese plastering using that waterproof black board I was talking about. In this video, they use the wrong material for waterproofing the seams. However, you can see the black board that they use for plastering. I am a couple of months away from doing my plastering, so I have time to figure out exactly what I need to do. Japan gets a lot of rain, so we need to be careful about how we do things. Your way is the best, and I like your attitude about doing it right the first time. Here is the link to the video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=s2y3DtY3mcQ

Before watching the video, I'm assuming that you'll mention how the lime can block some of the EMFs/radio/microwaves, that can bombard our bodies, and keeps our cells alert artificially, and can prevent humans from getting the very best sleep.

At 18:00 he says mixing sand and type S lime and water won't make a cementitious plaster but that's exactly the recipe for lime/sand plaster. It's not concrete hard but it's as hard as plaster. It's confusing to hear him say lime and sand and water won't bond in a video about lime plaster. I just plastered my adobe wall with lime and sand and water.

Does anyone know the actual product he applied to his walls in this video and how it was mixed? It looks like lime with silica sand and white cement? Is it a premixed bag?

You CAN make a lime plaster with Type S Lime and water, but it lacks many of the advantages that the addition of cement provides, including higher strength and reduced curing times. Modern plasters almost always contain cement unless it's being used in preservation work to match the existing traditional lime plasters.

Better solution, than gypsum boards screwed to the rafters.Lime plaster is great, different than plaster of Paris.I'm a journeyman carpenter, and cut out new rafters with douglas fir lumber.

Thanks for the video. I'm an enthusiast in natural/traditional building and am a huge proponent of lime. Any idea why we cannot use lime putty to "paint" a thick coat on exterior wood siding instead of paint?

Painting your ceiling walls with vinyl silk paint isn't good as moisture sticks to it coursing mould ,in closed area's ordinary emulsion is better ,

    Good day!

Looking for some advice on lime plaster products.
Do you know of any reputable companies that sell lime paint or is this something that one could make on their own reliably?

Looks like just type s lime and water, but that sounds too easy/good to be true!

Also, I'm looking for an alternative to italian plasters such as Stucco Italiano, Vasari, etc.

    Any suggestions or recomendations?

Love your videos and your style!

Hi Kirk, thanks for posting this. It's been a few years since you plastered with Lime in your house, i'm wondering if you still feel strongly about the health benefits, or if you can offer an update? Thanks!

Hello Creighton, yes I still believe minerals play an important part in health for a person.
However, the health benefit can't be seen thus most won't belive it, this fact does not alter my opinion of lime Plastering. Lime is a versatile mineral.
Lime is a calcium-containing inorganic mineral composed primarily of oxides, and hydroxide, usually calcium oxide and/ or calcium hydroxide. … The rocks and minerals from which these materials are derived, typically limestone or chalk, are composed primarily of calcium carbonate.
      Have a great new year,
