repair interior cement concrete walls, parge coating
Parge the ugly out of your concrete wall or foundation
Hello again to all of our DIY weekend plastering warriors,
today we are giving a few tips on how to make interior cement concrete walls pretty, or parging cement note you can use cement plaster or interior plasters, we also call this method parging cement foundations.
I was asked to apply cement plaster as this was an access area that dumpsters were to be move in and out, the cement plaster is more difficult to apply but stronger than interior plaster.

Always fun watching you work Kirk. Did you also paint that area? I was looking forward to seeing the finished result.
Hello OTC, no we don't ever do the painting especially when you consider the 28 day cure time.

+EJConrad E Z big guns, don't go scaring him off.

+Dazza skillz correctamundo, technically he's blind in one eye and can't see out the other.
But he's family so we keep him anyway.
Cheers!
Kirk giordano
Nothing beats watching ol' kirky boy on the trowel.. A masterclass.. Love it!
+Dazza skillz Hey Dazza, attaboy, thanks for the bone.
I was wondering how this one was going to come out as I was so beat up this day I could hardly talk let alone work., Plus after we did these walls we drove to Jason's job and worked tIll dark.
Glad it was not apparent.
Cheers,
Kirk Giordano
Great video and a job well done Kirk. You should also point out that doing a job like that without a doubt requires a second person mixing, especially with a rapid set.
+Adr1an110 No doubt brother.
It's absolutely necessary, and even then it's difficult when doing 4 of these beat up walls at a time.
Cheers
Kirk Giordano
Nice finish, what happen to that front conner at end ? Did you taper it? >Cheers TU
Hey Peter, hows the health?
I tapered it as I said I would but we did a lot of repairs on this day and the cement we used has a set strength of about 3,000 psi in 30 minutes so we had to use it or lose it.
In other word if I lose a section I have to use a sludge hammer to break off and rebuild, it's a fine line with show and tell video's with this cement plaster.
That's an issue when explaining while working with this rapid set cement, when fully set has a psi strength of close to 4,500 psi, thats why its used for concrete bridges.
Cheers brother.

+Kirk & Jason Giordanos DIY plastering and stucco tips I know the time factor is critical …. but the end corner is about the hardest part to achieve in the whole project .. not discounting the restof the job just saying the
the corner was something never shown , darn .. I'm doing sos so thanks s for asking . Cheers bro . Peter
Hi Peter, sometimes we cant get the whole job in the picture, I agree that sucks,
Kirk giordano
No problem , maybe other some time , cheers
I'm not sure if you mentioned it but I watched it twice and couldn't find it: what type of 'mud' are you using?
Wow thanks a lot for the response! I have an old house with lath and plaster walls. I'm about to start patching a huge hole from where I removed a fireplace and I need to build up the wall by about 2.5 inches to make it level with the existing walls. I thought that was too thick a gap for gypsum compound, so I wanted to use some kind of cement for a base coat. Any ideas what a diyer might be able to get away with?
Hi Ben, if it were me I would use west pac fast patch or fast set 20 minute patching compound.
That means when you mix a bucket you have 20 minutes to apply, then it will be hard enough for the next coat, you keep mixing and applying until you have it to the thickness you want.
The bags are powered gypsum use just add clean water, make certain all your buckets, and drill paddles are clean or any crap in the bucket or on the paddle will accelerate the set time to say 5 or 10 minutes.
I recommend 20 minute mud as this is the average pace of most home owners.
Home Depot and Lowes as well as most hardware stores also sell the same product in 40, 60, 90 minute set times.
I am assuming this is an interior wall.

Wow I was not expecting such an in depth answer, thanks a lot!
I have watched all of you videos. I'm not a plasterer or anything (I'm a biomedical engineer in fact) but for some reason I find your work deeply satisfying and your sense of humour is always on point! Thanks again!
+Kirk & Jason Giordanos DIY plastering and stucco tips
Kirk, I'm a little confused, the "mud" looks like concrete but when I googled west pac fast patch it looks like its a drywall mud. Is that right?
Hi Brian, the mud I'm applying in this video is Eiisenwall cement plaster it's made for exterior but can be applied inside also.
From your question I thought you were referring to to interiors walls that's why I suggested west packs fast patch.
Is your patch interior or exterior?
Kirk giordano
Nice job. Thanks for the next one.
Hi David, thanks for the bone,
Cheers,
Kirk giordano
The best part about interior work is there is no ugly hour, you can have the lights on exactly were you need it and then fix it, we use a synthetic coat on all jobs so when we repair foundations we have to skim it, come back then mesh it up and brown it again every time
hello jacob kindsvatter, I hear you, I still prefer to work outside, fresher air.
Cheers!
Kirk Giordano
Yeah we're on a huge outside job right now working in the cold rasping a frozen wall is a great workout that's all I have to say about that
Hey Kirk, nicely done. How about skim coating an interior wall? Can you use cementitious stucco for drywall? Did some stucco work already and followed your advices, it worked out great! THANKS
Kirk,
I'm a bricklayer all the way on the east coast, somehow found your videos. i constantly watch because you remind me of my dad. He's also a bricklayer but we do a lot of stucco work along with concrete which is similar to stucco with the way you work it. just wanted to say your the fucking man your funny as hell give a east coast shoutout your a star.
Anthony
+tonio de roilio
Hola, O man, now you went and did it!
You my friend are my newest and bestest pal for that shoutout,
cheers to all our fellow plasterers out working for a living on the East Coast.

Hey Pro…..as usual a great vid, you mentioned you were using Rapid Set™, which product did you use…cement all, mortar, stucco…etc
+24t68Jm1, hey dude, we used Eisenwall rapid set, this product is only sold at the professional material yards as it has lots of dos and don't.
However the rapid set stucco patch will be very similar and it's sold at all the hardware stores.

Thanks Kirk,……. why the long sleeve white button down dress shirt with tail out on the job? Just a trademark?
Morning JM dude,
whats a trademark?
White long sleeve shirts help with the heat and protect my arms and neck from cement plaster burns.
Plus every Friday at the Salvation Army, 1 block from my house they have all clothes half off, which makes these shirts about 2 bucks each, can't beat that price.
Cheers,

that makes Perfect sense El Capitan
I always find your videos helpful as well as entertaining, and this one is no exception, but If I may I'd like to offer a suggestion?
This being a quick close up view of the surface that you are working after each step is completed? Thanks Kirk
P.S. you've really got a good thing going here, bro.
Evening Zakk Gardner dude, thats a good tip,
thank you, will try and remember to tell Jason this.
Best wishes,

Very nice of you to take the time out to show everyone.
Hi Rob Dude, thank you and no worries,
cheers!

I have an interior wall that used to be an exterior block wall. Had a pipe leak and had to open it up. I don't want to fill with concrete unless I have to? Is there a better solution?
Hi steven perrigo, sure there is Gypsum, such as westpac's fast setting compound, or any of the other products that sets fast when activated by adding water, these products can only be used inside as if they get wet after curing they resort back to slime.
They do sell ten pound boxes of rapid set stucco, also, when this product gets wet, nothing happens except this cement plaster product gets stronger.
Best wishes,

+Kirk & Jason Giordanos DIY plastering and stucco tips thank you!

i am preparing to cover an entire basement at my mothers house. what is your recommendation for the type of mix to use for completing this project? it is a paint sealed concrete foundation. i am aware of a highly reputable bonding agent but would like your professional opinion on whether to use portland and sand, masonry mix, or basically what you would prefer to mix for this type of project. it is an estimated 900 square feet area
How much weaker in psi is the eisenwall vs rapid set stucco patch us mere mortals must use? Can stucco patch be built up just as thick?
@Kirk Giordano plastering Inc. I was just doing stucco work yesterday telling my friend about you that I can hear you in my head yelling "get some more muck on that hawk and get it on the wall!" You're the man thanks you for all you do
Why not make sure that you are truly saved by Jesus Christ and practice this way.
Remorsefully confess with your heart your sins to Jesus Christ who is God and tell Him that you right now are repenting of your sins and you want to be born again of the Spirit from above. Tell Jesus that you are remorsefully sorry for breaking His commandments and that you are begging for forgiveness from Him. Allow His blood from the cross to wash away your sins. After this is done with your heart successfully the Holy Spirit will come to live within you and He will rebuild you from the inside out.
Look for signs that you are living righteously. Things like spreading the good news from Jesus, getting other people saved, a craving for the word of God, reading the Bible, etc… These things are known as a calling and fruit bearing. If you're not bearing fruit then keep doing it. Sometimes it takes time to get saved. Read Matthew chapter 13 from the King James Bible. God bless!!!
Looks phenomenal
@Kirk Giordano plastering Inc. you're the best. God Bless
Thank you. Learning so much.
No prob Kirk. I wish I had the talent like you have as a master of 10,000 hours. I’m ok, but the ease at which you flow is incredible.
Thanks for showing us and explaining with amazing details
What is the scooping tool your helper uses to get the cement from the bucket
Mr. Kirk, I have a few questions if you would please. Can I do this over ICF walls? Straight to the foam? …or should I put anything over the foam first? If so, what? Also, if it’s straight on concrete, (for inside of the house) which kind of plaster should I use?
are you covering the wall with water or smth at the very beginning before parging?
kirk i have a foundation wall in a basement a customer wants skim coated so they can paint it. it is rough right now with pertrusions sticking out also bolts coming through and it has been painted. i was considering knocking the roughness down with maybe a grinder of sort cutting the bolts and using usg durabond brown bag to do the initial scratch coat then skimming it with 90 ez sand.would you recommend this should i apply a bond agent prior to coating any advice is appreciated.
