What mix ratio do you use for the plaster, and is it just straight portland cement and sand?

Howdy Dimitris, I buy my cement at the plastering yards, like Westside building materials.
I use Hansons Lehigh premium cement plaster, as a rul.
It has all the necessary lime and common already added in the bags.
We just add three times the sand to this cement.

Can't tell you how many times your videos have explained why previous projects didn't always go as planned or how something could've gone faster/smoother. You are a master at plastering and it shows. And to see Jason working with you and venturing out on his own projects has to make you proud. Thanks again!!

I see on the upper part of the wall has that white efflorescence how should I attempt to remove that and do I have to. ? 2nd part of question is lower portion is just crumbling apart onto the floor. If I run my hand across it. It will crumbl like sand falling off it. What do you suggest for both lower part and upper part to do. If you need a couple of pictures I could some how send them to you. It's nice having someone like yourself doing these videos and helping people like my self getting it done. Thank you

From his actions, Kirk Giordano proves to be a very intelligent and wise person who learns through his own tacit observations. His voice is calm and the chosen words are rich enough to describe the accurate hidden detail of the undergoing processes. What I admire most is his decision making after he observes the present condition of the situation and his mind works out what is required in the near-immediate future. He is a gentleman of great experience in this work. His rate of change of manipulating his tools makes that stucco obey all his demands. His hands accelerate and decelerate according to the action and it all starts with the mixing of the sand and the portland cement to the right consistency to flow. The manner in which he picks up " the mud" and deposits it in place clearly shows that Kirk is a "gentleman" as the rate at which he starts and finishes an action without overshooting the final position is the mark of an experienced professional. The delay and wetness he introduces to let the stucco set or run for the next action shows his great experience The logic used in making that corner is brilliant, commencing with the wetting of the straight wood and what and how to chose the wood, keeping it in place with his knee, while pulling in the mud that he deposited and accumulated beforehand close to the corner, is a rational move that helps him fill in the space to blend the flatness of the wall with the edge of the corner. His smooth voice and manipulation at 10:09, both chosen with a rate of change that keeps that white shirt so clean proves beyond doubt that Mr. Giordano is a real Gentleman.
I cannot help thinking that with the work rhythm chosen in his voice and manipulation and the style of pacing about to conduct any situation, Kirk would make a wonderful classical dancer handling the rhythm of a Staus Waltz on any international dancehall and I am certain that he would be a winner and a gentleman in whatever he cares to tackle. All I can say is that he made music and performed a nice rhythm with his work style and gentle voice and body actions with the right rate of change shown in this video. He is a gentleman who would appreciate the mathematical operations in a complex automatic control system which he somehow developed through his own intelligence and rational thinking. Sir, my congratulations.

Are you supposed to use some sort of bonding agent under that stucco? Or what do you do if you used oil on the forms to form up the concrete walls?

    • Kirk Giordano plastering Inc. says

      February 19, 2020 at 6:29 am

Evening Chris, My son did use a bonding agent called "Weld Crete," before applying the stucco.
However, if the cement wall is immaculate, you can just hydrate or mist the wall with water. Thus when the stucco is applied, you get what we call a mechanical bond.
As far as using oil on the foam boards this you can do or saturate them with water before pouring the cement. This way, the wet cement does not adhere too firmly to the boards.
Making the boards easier to remove.

My old motel has a 1/8" of paint on block walls. I thought I'd put mesh up an go. Paint is cracked and peeling with lead in it I assume. Just bury it?

Evening Delbert, I'd recommend removing the old stuff then applying new stucco, as the new stucco is only as good as the paint or stucco it's adhered to.

I was taught the European way of rendering, involves more of a process and we finish off much smoother and flatter walls. Absolutely perfect finishes, it’s what we have a call for I guess, very rarely do we get asked to do a bagged finish simply trowel on and sponge off. Been in the game for 25 years now and loved every minute of it
Keep up the great work Kirk it’s good that the younger generation have a great mentor like yourself.

If the job permitted enough time could you “tack-glue” the corner pieces on? I like Lexel, it would absolutely grab the concrete or block and metal. Then coat them once the glue is completely hardened and the corner piece is no longer move. I would think that would be secure enough?

have you put stucco over a CMU Wall that the other side is a finished home? Have you tried putting liquid water proofing on the CMU then stuccoing? There is a new product that lets claims you can do it, but don't want to be the guinie pig. Trying to finish my late fathers home. ! Trying to come up with ideas to finish his exterior. never knew I didn't have to put a lathe, i was going to go with wood siding, but stucco seems better solution ! big question is you gotta find the right person to do it.

This product claims fluid applied . Sticks tenaciously to the concrete. Similar caliper of product as the stick and peels you had in your other video. Called polywall blue barrier .

But no lath required . Lathe adds up pretty quickly no ?

I don't want to spec something then people do the finger pointing lol. So I figure I would ask.

What is the best bagged product to purchase from the big box store?
I have old cinder block foundation .
Seemed to work for a while but there are sections that have pulled away. They were maybe 1/4-3/8 inch thick. Maybe "type S" was used but it could have been type m. Lasted 15 years and had been painted with drylok paint.

Do you recommend putting a bonder on those spots were it came loose?

Lowe's has so many different types of bag product that I would like to know which product to look into.

I'm in the Northeast (north NJ)
And there may be some movement.
However most of the plastering is still intact. The plastering went maybe a couple inches below grade.

    Thanks.

@Kirk Giordano plastering Inc. Do you have any other product suggestions. " RapidSet Stucco" not sold within 100 miles of my area and only sold by Home Depot near me. They have the Raid Set line but not stucco. . At Lowes I can only get Quikrete. Either Stucco Base coat, Stucco Finish Coat, Surface Bonding QuickWall, and One Coat fiber reinforced Stucco. Which would be recommended for patching areas that came free from a cinder block foundation in the East Coast.
      Thanks in advance.

@Richard Johnson He told stories of people doing things wrong. Doing things wrong is human, and explaining why something is wrong is a great way to learn, really, there is no way to learn something without making mistakes. So these stories are not shit, they are valuable information and people who made the mistakes now are not only smarter, but are teaching us in a way.
I'm pretty sensitive so I often find people rude sooner than others, but this time I really don't see it. Hence I thought something had struck a person cord with you. Then again, Europeans are quick to point out others mistakes and I might be numb to that.

@pete a Hey Richard, it's interesting with close to 50 million views, we get barely 1% that whine about me telling stories of my past adventures.
I'm somewhat shocked by this meager percentage. For lack of a more accurate word, whiners who want free advice and directed to their specific needs immediately are rare.
So this dude, Is kind of interesting/humorous to me.
He even breaks the stereotype by placing his picture and name. The average troll/whiner/big meanie does not do this.
      Cheers,
      Kirk Giordano plastering

I HAVE stucco that needs work… and, as they say, there is a YouTube video for everything. That being said, this guy is a crack up to watch. He is easy to understand. He explains things for us "weekend warriors" in a way that we can grasp. His instructions do not leave anything out… and he is freaking funny. AND, he is local to me. I get a kick out of watching him work on YT in areas that I pass all the time.

Kirk. I'm trying to prep a cinder block wall for a mural and there are some troublesome cracks that I'd like to fill up before I hit it with primer. What should I use to do this? I will be applying exterior paint over top of the primer and joint filler.

That magnet was such a great idea. I used a punch in a piece of plastic tube to hold the nail. It worked but that magnet would have been perfect

@Kirk Giordano plastering Inc. I have a 200 year old house with an old lime/sand, clay based mortar for the stone work. The area around the fireplace has about 50% plaster that is applied to the mortar directly. I'll be putting a mantle back up, but I think we are looking to "even out" the wall by plastering up to the fireplace surround. Have any videos about this?

Can someone have you come out and pay for your expertise and opinion?. I have a home made of cinder block but had been painted over. I just need a professional to ask advice so I can be a weekend warrior doing it right

Check if you have anyone nearby working the same job, ask them just for 5 mins of their time, should do it for free. Usually when people ask me I don't charge cuz I'm not working, just telling them from what I know

Wire works over soft material like insulation. Twist the slack areas to tighten it up. It’s pointless over concrete. If it’s jointed stucco or pebble-dash, use glass fibre scrim into the base coat.
