Hello ambitious guys and gals, who are interested in learning How to Match a Stucco Dash or Tex Coat with Stucco and also apply both coats at the same time.
This popular video gives a step by step video tutorial With a tiny bit of attention you can connect the dots in understanding the basics of stucco and plastering
This know how can be used to save you some dough, and if you do the work yourself will help create a sense of euphoria and peaceful nights sleep knowing, cool beans daddio, I did this small plaster repair myself.

FYI, Most desk workers who aren’t fortunate enough to have a job which requires physical labor so they don’t realize the sense of euphoria that the often deeper, and continuous heavy and deep breathing brings about to our health, we tend to forget to use our entire lungs to grab air (oxygen) instead we do what babies or alcoholic’s do breath with just our stomach, bad news, get physical learn to take huge amount of oxygen into full chest and stomach.
This deep breathing creates extra oxygen into all the cells and muscles which helps with avoiding decease and gives that sense of calm, even if life throw a cure you way, again, what more does a righteous person need.

Old Kirk says, material knowledge is 70% of being a well rounded plasterer,
The other 30% is application.

Evening Gee Dubb, an expert like you should know these material tests. O.K. it's
Rapid Set, it's a white cement and the sand we add s usually a sort of tan which makes the cement tan.
      Traditional portland is grey.

Evening Josh Harris, good guess brother, that's close, I have used lehigh hanson white cement many times.
However on this video I'm applying back to back scratch and brown coats, this can't be done with Lehigh's white cement plaster without adding luminite which changes the color from tan to dark brown.
Rapid set cement plaster gives this light tan appearance and the ability to do back to back finishes up to 6 inches thick.

I work for a company, we do small to medium size jobs, we're in southern California. Your videos are great, you seem to be the only one who knows what there doing. I do have a question for you. I am doing a patch for some flashing we put in around a deck. The house was built in the 1930's and looks like a real heavy dash finish but I was wondering if you could confirm for me by looking at a picture.

      Hi Nathan, thank you.
Absolutely, I can confirm what it is, please send that picture to kirk4stucco@gmail.com
often I can match a dash finish with (clean coarse washed sand) from the cement, gravel or professional supplier's like Acapulco Rock & Soil.
An old plasterers trick we've been doing for more than 30 years.
you may already know this but just in case click on the video below that we posted yesterday.
Plus the heavy sand makes it even stronger while being a lot less likely to crack.

Morning Eddie Spruce, thank you, when Jason makes a video they are all public, he made a great one last night which took hours as he was adding some new tech stuff to it.
We started it at christmas time and there is a lot of splicing in which takes time.
Jason downloaded it, we reviewed it and found a glitch. So it's temporarily, private, Jason won't upload it when it's not as he wishes and the nightlife was calling big time.
So he decided to try again to day upon awakening it will be public as soon as he can get a  synchronizing glitch out of it.
Its the coolest pizza oven video we have ever stuccoed complete with a 9 piece copper roof and marble surrounds.
We applied stucco and a Santa Barbara Smooth Mission Finish to it.

Hi Josh Harris, excellent question. I have a Salvation army store 2 blocks from my house. (Second Hand Store)
On Fridays everything is half off, I go about every other month and buy about 5 at a time which usually cost about 10 bucks.
I started doing this 30 years ago when I was in the union and we got filthy working behind a plaster pump.

I met the homeowner once and  he seemed to care little about the existing bad finishes, he even suggested that all I needed to do was the best I can and not worry if it didn't match match.
Of course I wouldn't get any satisfaction if I didn't match his finish.

Evening Overlords Shadow, cool screen name by the way.
The muds boards we use stand two different ways, either on their sides which get them closer to the ground for shorter folks or as I need them standing straight up as I'm tall and it would hurt my back to take mudd off a low board all day.
All the major stucco suppliers sell these (westside building Materials) or you can order them online. They are called mud boards or mortar boards.

question for you would you say its a good investment to buy a 1929 wood frame house and trying to change it to stucco? Well let's say that we would have to hire someone to do the job and we don't know much it would cost. Can you give me a guesstimate on how much we would need for such a job? Thank you in advance !!!

Afternoon bluekeet, this is a green sponge float used for stucco and or cement plastering.
When very wet it brings out more of the sand, the drier it is the less sand will show.
It's a bit different from the red handled grouting ones, the grout tile is hard sponge and won't pullout the sand in stucco.
Go to bontool.com to order one or any other plastering tool know to man.

Morning Gil Velazquez, this is close, the rapid set from home depot has everything in it already, you or me just add water.
I buy that same material but a professional grade, know as Eisenwall sold only at plastering, sand material yards, we have to add the sand, this material is not very user friendly, for this reason it"s not sold and Lowe's or Homedepot, all of these fast set or same day, stucco's can't be mixed more than 3 to 5 minutes or the strength can be compromised.

Well if the stucco is composed of portland cement and sand only then I'm sure it would shrink somewhat. Non-shrink grout contains gypsum I believe. So are you using non-shrink grout or not? Inquiring minds want to know…

      Evening Fax Dude,
Most caulking shrink, but I have never in the 30 plus years had any shrinking in any cement plaster, ever.
Portland cement mixed with sand makes stucco,
portland cement mixed with rocks create concrete. neither shrink but both can and will crack as this is normal.

Howdy Fuuny Bird dude, below is a video we did recently on how to patch in a smooth finish however it was to be painted.
FYI, there is only one color that can be applied to a middle of a wall where the color will show the least, this color is no color, it's termed crystal White.
I have applied this about 5 time in 30 years and each time I do I inform the client's the color will still show at least 3 tints lighter or darker.
if they say that's not acceptable, I say we will go corner to corner, if they say that's not acceptable, I then say good luck finding a fealla who does not know the limitations of colored stucco as some tacks are out of any applicators hands.

Evening Yeshua, my truck sits outside, cats do creep in and crap every once in a while.
This won't affect the integrity or outcome of the mixed cement plaster. Besides, it's normal for a cat not wanting to dig a hole in hard dirt to do its business.

We have slop dash stucco on our house. We changed our windows and will need to do some patching. However, I prefer smooth stucco. Can we patch and cover up the remaining stucco with new smooth stucco or would we have to remove the old stucco first? Do you have a video that will help us? thank you 🙂

Evening Kelly, I do but not sure myself as to where it is.
If you're going to do this project, it would include pressure washing the entire home, then applying a bonding agent then a skim coat to smooth out the stucco.
This takes some time in, you may want to hire this out?

@Kirk Giordano plastering Inc. That's an amazing body of work. Not sure how many I have already watched, but I have learned a lot from the dozens I have already seen. Videos like yours definitely have an edge over books. There's nothing like watching an expert actually share his secrets this way. I feel like I am in a private class of one with the instructor. Thanks so much !
