Turn any concrete wall into a chalkboard, chalkboard paint

Hello everybody, Jason combined 3 video’s into one long one as we had many viewers ask for for one easy to follow video,
Please keep in mind this was our first wall we did for a chalkboard finish. I was originally told the wall didn’t have to be so smooth.
Ol Kirk does not know every detail to every product even after 30 plus years.
If we or any of you DIY folks do this simply apply a skim coat and steel trowel that coat smooth eliminating a color finish.

Morning Collin Mark, I do, I buy them by the bundle at least 6 to 7 bundles at a time, a bundle has 12 pairs, I had some bad experiences many years ago with the skin on my hands.

Thanks for your reply! We have just recently started watching your videos of your projects. We are as a company dipping our toes in the world of plaster and stucco. I'm starting trade school in March 2014 and am pretty pumped about learning this stuff. I am a drywaller/taper so I've been at that for about 8 years. Keep the videos coming! Always love the humour you and your crew have together. Reminds me of the crew I work for

I find the quickset we use (Sheetrock 20,45,90) can really dry out the hands. I can understand what you have experienced. Was it the porters cement that hurt your hands? It must be very caustic, sorry to hear

Evening Mark, your right interior mud is much worse for drying out the hands. I know two dudes form way back that have lost fingernails as they were too tough and cool to wear gloves, none of that nonsense for me. If it goes into the skin it seeps into the blood too.

I made the mistake yesterday of not using Latex gloves at all times while fiber-glassing a roof. I have shards of glass all over my hands and as you say it is not only painful but brings down your mood or something like that. Need to recover! What a pain!

Thanks for taking time to set up the videos for each project! I think I might just start wearing gloves as well, not sure how I would like it when I'm using my knives for all the joints and inside corners. Your rounded trowels, are they for concrete? I saw them at Home Depot here in Ontario Canada. And the floating trowel as well with a wooden handle. Gotta have the right tools to do the best job, even if it means spending some extra coin!

Evening Mark, I cut the tips off my gloves when I lath saves many a bleeding hand.
I realize I use pool trowels they are usually 18×5 or my monster 20X5, they are also 50 percent higher in cost 60 bucks a trowel verse's the 30 bucks or a typical 12X5 plastering trowel, but they give my pleasure as my wrists can handle the extra weight and flexibility.
Best wishes and thanks for the comment, Kirk giordano

Evening Mark, lathing is paper and wire, usually over sheer-wall prior to plastering. All 3 of my boys and both daughters know how to plaster and have helped me plaster at times.

Hi Kirk, John Hart again. I thank you for pointing me to that (stucco) ceiling video . When I said (plaster) I should have said ( cement or stucco materials). I wasn't presenting it correctly. I want to do what you did with (stucco cement materials) over the hardie board ceiling. Do I have to lathe over the hardie, or can I do it without ? .Were working against gravity, so that's why I was wondering about adheshion , cracking, material applications. Thanks again , John.

Kirk when doing any kinds of painting(tip) first to make it easier is to divide an area into 2 parts. Doesnt have to be long but top and bottom half work. So you focus on painting the top first using your roller in up and down motions because if you go sideways you would see differences in the finished painting job. Then you work on the bottom half and after you finish that ,you simply go to the beginning of the area and just pass your dried roller from the top to bottom so you can get a smooth clean finish.

Kirk, why is it that you applied the glue like substance on this wall prior to applying cement and not on other demonstration videos that show how to apply cement on exterior house walls with stucco?

      Good evening Margarita, excellent question,
we apply the bonding agent on the wall that is painted as plaster will not stick to any painted surface.
When we have cement, block or brick walls the new stucco will adhere to these substrates as they are porous, but they have to be free from all dust and dirt, as nothing adheres to a dusty surface.
