Benefits of using a large swimming pool trowel
Hi folks, In this quick video I show some of the benefits to using a wide pool trowel. I get questioned on why I use this instead of a more traditional square trowel and the answer is I use both when I need them. In this video I am using a 18X5 swimming pool trowel.

hey kirk what you think about the using that trowel on british gypsum skim like to hear your thoughts on it. all the best keep up the good work
Morning Bloggs dude, it really doest matter if it's british, american or any other nationality or brand name I have used my 20X5 with excellent results on interiors, often. I have been using a 20X5 swimming pool trowel for about 25 years. For me it works well with my skill level.
Have a great day!

how ya doin kirk, thanks for the info think I'll pick one up and give it a try i'll try anything to make the job easier , cheers mate
Evening Bloggs dude, buy the 18X5 not the 20X5. the 20 is so huge you will call me up and yell at me for the recommendation. The 18X5 might even be too big to use. I have found few guys who like the 20 and sometimes I even prefer my 18.
Best wishes,
kirk giordano Plastering
hey kirk,
I normally use a 16" ss marshal to lay on and flatten in then wet trowel with 16" refina superflex and last dry trowel with refina plazi float I'd like to see how i'd get on with a pool,,
all the best kirk
kirk convened me ….. Ive already went out and bought a pool trowel and a hawk, watched all the videos and thought "Hell! ,Ive got this!! , "Ill save my company some money and do some stucco repairs myself" ….tried practicing the scooping motions with 20 minute mud in my house :/ 🙁 ….. now Im still working on getting lots of 20 minute mud out of my carpets …. he makes it look way too easy!
Evening Terry Broome, funny you say I make it look easy, today we did a video with stiff mud, I actually tried my best to spread it to show folks you're only as good as your materials.

Hi Kirk! Thanks for the videos. Love DIY, and do my own carpentry, but never touched concrete or plaster. Wanting to plaster over some cinder blocks, and brickwork to get a smooth uniform finish. Could you suggest a beginners tool kit with cost in mind?
Evening Simon Smith, a beginners tool kit simply includes a hawk and trowel, cost about 50 bucks.
You can purchace online at bontool.com

Hi Albert, it's not a perfect swimming pool trowel as only the far corners have the radius, I used to use my chop saw with a metal blade to chop the complete radious off, but now bontool.com sells one, with the straight edge, will do a video to show what I am referring to next week as I don't really like to use a swimming pool full radius trowel?
confused?
That's why next week I intend to show folks on a wall and in detail what I am referring to.

Kirk great tip. We have been selling swimming pool trowels to plasters for years. I can tell he's a plaster when ask for round end trowel for stucco. Check us out at http://www.drptools.com look under pool trowels.
Howdy DRP Tools guys, the pool trowels you sell are great but there is a huge difference your has a complete half round radius at the end.
Great trowel but not like mine, close though.
Mine I used to use my chop saw to cut the ends straight for years but have now found companies that sell them like I prefer, watch the video below, when you guys state to make this straight cut, send me one I will video it for you and tell folks where to go to purchace online.
Just my edges have a small radius but my ends are straight as the video below proves.

You can call this the Giordano Trowel, I will show in a video why it's better for all around plastering, that one detail makes a big difference,
Heck if you can make it 18 by 5 thats even better as my 20 by 5 is even a bit too big for me and my 16 by 5 is too small so like the three bears story make the first an 18 by 5 with a similar design as in the video and you can call it the three bears trowel, not to big or small, (but just right.)
Cheers and all you floks at DPR tolls have a happy new year!

No bonding agent on te edges of that patch? its gonna crack all along the edges for sure.i put bonding agent on specially if there's a painted wall.
Good evening David, we all have our ways,
FYI, bonding agents are specifically engineered to adhere concrete to concrete or stucco to painted surfaces.
When we patch around anything newly installed such as doors or windows for example, we overlap our new stucco netting with the existing stucco netting, this is the proper way to minimize perimeter cracking in patchwork.
bonding agents are for bonding and not for stoping cracking, however that's what life is about freedom of speech and for a fella to do as he pleases in life.

Kirk is the man at stucco and plaster! He could use a bucket scoop as a trowel and make it look good!
please advise which trowels and hand tools i will need to do internal lime plaster (beginner). i have 50 square metres to plaster onto stone walls. i like Pool trowels. The plaster is very inflexible like doughnd quite dense/heavy ? also need to do pointing and need you to recommend a good hawk too please (sizes etc). thanks
Been watching your videos for a few months now getting ready to put a skimcoat over paint on my house and stucco patch some areas. thanks for all your advice.
