Santa Barbara Smooth Mission Finish (SBMF)
Howdy folks, in this video we show while I explain how to apply a Santa Barbara Smooth Mission Finish with character. Instead of ending up with a smooth finish this wall has cat faces and float marks too. These are techniques that give any home a unique finish that many folks admire. The term (Cat Faces) simply means we apply the first coat then the second coat is applied missing tiny areas.

Santa Barbara Smooth Mission Finish (SBMF)
Hi PrideNLoyal, cool handle and thanks for the bone!
We are located in Oakland ca. This project was in Berkeley, ca. for an engineer who is the home owner and a great fellow.
Plastering is all about practice and working together as a team, which when you get it down, makes for a pleasant and fulfilling day!
Where you guys out of?
Best wishes, and have a great day!

Howdy Chris. On this wall they were 4 footers. They make 6 footer also, I’ve been in this trade so long I actually have some 8 footers which they no longer sale on account they are bit dangerous. You can buy them for about 50 to 60 dollars each from any stucco or plastering material yard. In fact Westside building materials in Oakland sells them to the public at very reasonable prices.
Best wishes and have a groovy evening.

Hey Kirk, thanks for your videos. They have given me the courage to do many projects on my home and have given it quite the face lift. Question for you. Can you do a SB smooth finish on existing plaster or does the old finish have to be torn down?
Howdy Jay Charles, you're welcome,
You can apply a smooth finish over any house, but you have to make certain the existing wall finish is flat like a brown coat.
Meaning if you have a rough finish you would first have to pressure wash, apply a bonding agent then apply a skim coat, allow to cure then it will be ready for a Santa Barbara Smooth Mission Color Finish,
Best wishes,
Kirk and family
Hi Kirk, Thanks for the videos. I looked over almost all your videos and I think you are doing and awesome job! One question though, where can I get any brand of this stucco ? I looked in Home depot, lowes and other retailer and couldn't find anything. I tried Bmi, La Habra with no luck. Please let me know. Thanks!
Evening Backer Abu-Jaradeh, excellent question, Lowes or Home Depot probably won't sell this Santa Barbara finish manufactured by La Habra, or other very fine sand finish, as most of their buyers won't know the rules on how to apply and may complain and ask for their money to be returned as it can only be applied similar to taping mud, meaning too thick and it shatter cracks every square inch in every direction.
Say for example La habra santa Barbara or say BMI marble have really fine sand, we in the trades call this sand 30/30 (really fine) so it will takes two coats, one for color coverage and the second to smooth out areas not perfect.
I would try Westside Building Materials or Close in hayward, Shamrock in San Rafael, Cal-Ply in Hayward, usually this fine sand based finish is sold at professional plastering and stucco yards.
You will however find the 20/30 to 16/20 finish coats at the store's you mentioned but these have heavier sand in them, more user friendly, and one coat will work if a person has an idea of how to apply.
Big hardware stores don't want the hassle of selling products that very few homeowner can apply properly, no doubt they realize few will understand what it takes to apply. Fewer complaints fewer returns!

Thank you for your quick response. Ok here's my real question, I have painted stucco (almost smooth, maybe light dash or even softer) I want to change to Santa Barbara Mission Finish. I tried texturing over paint but it was a a disaster. everything started falling down after maybe 10 days!!! I am removing all what I did right now. What was the correct process ? Should I skim over paint ? or Should I peel the paint off ? or maybe use a bonding agent ? I really don' think that stucco bonds good with paint (especially that mine feels slippery line oils based but it is not). any feedback is much appreciated. If you could also guide me to one of your videos that'll be great.
Evening Backer Abu-Jaradeh, you found out the hard way, me too, years ago.
Stucco does not adhere to a painted surface at least not for long unless the walls are properly prepared first.
First pressure wash with at least 3,000 psi, I have had all the paint come off a few times, that really sucks , but what you’re really trying to do is remove all dirt, grime, dust, mold and any loose paint, as you have seen when the paint fails so will whatever is on the top.
Then apply the boding agent to the walls (not in the mix)
Now you ready to begin again.
Copy and past the video below as it will help you understand, your time you will succeed.

@Kirk & Jason Giordanos DIY plastering and stucco instructional videos and forum
Thank you very much for the video that was so helpful =) So it is totally OK to retexture on top of painted soft wall if you have it really clean and apply the bonding agent, right ? I mean is the bonding agent really that effective ? I do not want to spend another week or so working on it and end up with the same issue!
I really feel bad because I did a really good job on the texture and I finished the whole house. Too bad it is coming off.
I really appreciate your help. Thank you very much.
Morning Backer Abu-Jaradeh, I have never had a bonding agent properly applied fail in close to 34 years.
I have however fixed at least 30 failing or loose stucco projects from fellas who didn't take the prep work seriously,
Make certain you pressure wash very well with a strong washer preferable the gas power washes most electric ones don't have the power necessary to clean and etch a wall.
The bonding agent or liquid lath seeps into this etching which you and I can't see, but this is what gives a wall the ability to hold the stucco forever.

Hey Kirk, what material are you applying.
Evening TMXPOZURZ, dude, what kind of thumnail name it this? (TMXPOZURZ) let me guess ganja induced? Ya man.
Anyway the material is La Habra's Santa Barbara Smooth Mission Finish or (SBMF) for short.
It has a very Fine sand in it.
Cheers, and have a Fantastic New Year! Kirk Giordano’s DIY plastering tips
thanks brotha
Can you tell us 'approximately' how long to wait before doubling back and applying second coat of finish color coat? Assuming average 80 degree day indirect sun etc. Also how long to wait before final steel troweling and floating to get smooth – I think I heard you say 1 hour and a half because it was cold. In each case do you wait until your finger no longer makes an impression? Thanks
Howdy Keith dude, the finger test you suggest works well, I am at the stage where I can look at the wall and tell, but often it's a good idea to touch the surface if you're not sure,
Cheers,
kirk giordano
Hi Kirk
I am loving all of your videos.
Thanks so much for taking the time to show your work and techniques.
You must be good for me to sit through commercials….but I am learning from a master and am willing to pay that small price.
I do have a question for you if you have the time.
I am planning a project using Tridipanels to create walls for a small house down in Baja.
Tridipanel is a core of foam encased in a proud (ferred) cage of thick welded wire that is then sprayed with 1.5" of concrete on both sides . The concrete (shotcrete) is then screeded and troweled flat.. (http://www.tridipanel.com/PDF/6.pdf)
Question is….if I want to put a Smooth Santa Barbara finish over the sprayed concrete….how should I prep the concrete ?
Skim coat first? If so…of what?
Bonding agent on the concrete?
House is near the ocean so I want to do the best I can. Getting too old to want to do big things twice.
Any tips would be appreciated. Any input at all would be much appreciated.
Stay healthy…Sincerely.
Mike P.
Hi Porter, if it were me I would ask the fellas to trowel it down as smooth as possible, then you can apply both coats at the right depth.
If the finished product is too sandy the 1/16 required for each coat will not cover the sand granules, Had this happen many times.
Best wishes, and by the way click out of any add or commercials.

Health, wealth, and happiness dude.
Evening Michael, thank you, I think you will do fine once you get started as you are researching and willing, most folks don't wish to try as it's dusty and sometimes physical tough until you gat the hang of it.
A little bit at a time and have help mixing.

One of the first things I learned from watching you guys is the team aspect.

Hello Michael, this trade is definite a team effort, most days there is exceptional harmony, but not every day, most means were way ahead of the game.

Hi Kirk, I'm wondering what type of the (ground, floor) protection are you using? is that a felt paper?
Evening Kamil Leda, yes, it is indeed, we use two ply paper as a rule, so I simply separate these two layers and viola ground cover.
Cheers,
kirk giordano
thank you
Hi Kirk, Im sure you already know, but to avoid burn marks we use plastic trowels, and corner tools for finish troweling to keep a uniform color finish for customers who it. Its a pleasure to watch, thx.
Hi bmlsb69, thanks for the tip and for the bone,
yes, I have third them also but prefer the steel trowels myself,

I have extra paint. do I have to mix paint and restucco the area? I know it won't be perfect but touch up is too dark with a brush.
Howdy Mike, were applying a cementitious color finish, It never needs painting, if you paint colored stucco watch the video below to see what happens. https://youtu.be/J5AOujIgIiU
Either paint the wall from corner to corner or if the patch is small enough it can be patched with a color coat material, but takes much skill.
Best wishes,
kirk giordano Plastering.
Thanks for the help and the amazing videos! Much appreciated.
Do you have a preferred brand of mix for this finish?
Morning Jess, most of the cementitious finish materials are the same, I use what my material yards sells, usually La HaBra, BMI, omega, western…..

I have been plastering for 32 years. I have never seen an experienced plasterer use a 18" Pool Trowel. Why? Your arm, regardless of mechanics, will be worn out before long. Perhaps your apprentices should try to save their arms for longevity. To each their own – but like i said you cant spread professionally with that large of a pool trowel for long. ….SURGERY!
Good Evening King Dude, strongly disagree, iff a fella working improperly they'll lose and muscle and or bones quickly plus food plays a major part.
My arm keeps getting stronger all the time, Use it or lose it.

Just trying to wrap my head around a master plaster condoning that size of trowel…be it pool or other…btw very nice work

How smooth does the brown coat have to be? My brown coat is pretty rough and parts are uneven. I notice in the background your brown coat appears just as rough as mine. Mine may be a little rougher. Can I still do a Santa Barbara smooth finish?
Good evening Signal dude, your brown coat should be free of imperfections as now your spreading a very fine finish, any holidays will more than likely give you issues and if you left grains of sand exposed these will come off when you trowel on your fine finish,
I advise you to take a trowel before you start your finish coat and simply scrape off any excess sand and fill any voids.

Ya but what kind of stucco is it? at the Home Depot they don't know much, I need to know what kind of stucco to buy, does it say For smooth finish? or fine sand?
Howdy, Greek Dude, Home Depot only sells the Lahabra finish coat with about10 colors available, if you visit a real plastering yard, colors are limitless as well as sand grits.
FYI, finishing stucco’s come in 94-pound bags there are three sand grits available, smooth 30/30, medium 20/30 grit or heavy 16/20 grit, you can purchase at any plastering material yard, favorite brands are BMI, Western, La Habra and so on.

Why is the first coat blue? Was it some sort of waterproofing material?
Howdy Mike, excellent question, I applied a bonding agent named weld crete made by Larsons, to kill some of the suction of the base coat.
I didn't want the finish to dry too fast.
Boding agents are usually for bonding cementitious finishes to painted surfaces buy have other purposes also.

Is it possible to get a santa barbara smooth finish over brick?
Yes you can. You would need to do proper basecoat first over the brick before the finish.
Hi kaylen, This is excellent advice.
Kirk Giordano plastering
How do you do a "sta barbara smooth" finish over the spanish lace skip typical california look?
Happy New Year Jose, two ways, depending on the original texture,
you skim it first with a basecoat, then apply two coats of 30/30 finish coat over.
Or if it's not too thick a pattern to start off with, you can apply 16/20 first.
"This is a heavy sand finish." then apply another coat of 30/30 fine sand.
I have done it both ways.

Hey Kurt love your work. We are in NC and remodeling a 1980's house with a block basement. The block only has 1 coat of mortar and nothing since then.We are tring to get a smooth finish to create a modern look. What should we go over the block with? Thanks
What type of material is used for the Santa Barbara ?
Kirk what’s the scratch and brown material behind this finish ? Is it just normal 16/20 then the 30/30 smooth finish ?
My guy also used a fiberglass mesh before he put the last stucco on for the smooth which I thought was interesting
Also they just finished the smooth stucco and I'm starting to see a lots of hairline cracks especially coming from the windows
Hi Kirk, I have been watching your videos for inspiration on my dream "Mission Finish" for my home here in Las Vegas.. My question is, I have always heard from "experts" that the applying a bonding agent to a painted stucco wall is going to fail prematurely. That the bond is only as good as the bond between the existing paint to the underlying substrate. My challenge is a heavy "spanish lace" texture that has a few paint jobs over it, in addition to cracks etc. I know I have to apply a good base coat but what is the difference in longevity of a maintenance-free job of either procedure 1. Applying Bonder-2.Base Coat 3.Mission Finish Stucco ___VS____1.Grinding off the stucco -2.Applying.Base Coat 3.Mission Finish Stucco? My question is realistically with our weather is the bonding agent good enough for 20 years of worry-free beauty?
Isn’t it an obvious statement to say 3 guys have 3 different touches wouldn’t it be noticeable if you didn’t float it ? I been plastering 30+ years and my finish coat is always dont by 1 person so I can get a uniformed coat .. Would u agree or am I just paranoid lol
Howdy Coach Dee, indeed I agree. I have found about 5 guys out of 30 who have a similar pattern to mine.
But like my son Jason says, we all have a different fingerprint or texture. Cheers.
