Santa Barbara Smooth Mission stucco finish, SBMF

Santa Barbara Smooth Mission stucco finish, SBMF

Howdy folk, in this video Jason, Dan and I show and explain Step by step instructions on how to apply Santa Barbara Smooth Mission finish on walls.
On this video we conclude a Santa Barbara Smooth Mission Stucco Finish on a house we stared before the rains held us off.
We simply show our methods of applying this particular Mediterranean home stucco finish as every plastering fella may do something a bit different then the next guy.
Old kirk say’s “apply two coats versus only one for this type of finish.”
I have done in the past, say in the early 90’s many of these finishes. This past experience provides me the luxury of knowing what to do and what not to do.
Like pounding out the mixer, wheel barrels for any and all loose stucco grit. A grain of regular sand or dirt will delay (big Time) the amount of time it takes to apply this type of finish.
Another tip fellas is, always use new buckets and very clean tools.
Many clients often ask for color variations, trowel marks, cat faces, and float marks and so on as it usually gives the home a more lived in look with charm and character.

Best wishes, thanks for watching and have a happy New Year to folks everywhere,

Howdy Michael, I’m the only one who wears these belts as I hurt my back sometimes, lifting these hundred pound sacks sometimes. In one scene in this video, Jason, had to move 30 bags so I let him you one of my braces, but as a rule he rarely needs them.
For me, I don’t want any more back issues than I already have. After 30 years of lifting bags in most time odd positions kicks me arce.

Howdy nick, a two story home can run from 18,000 to 24,000 depending on details. Send me an address. I will Google it and give you a more accurate cost based on the picture. Then you can use this estimate as a cost comparative.

Hi Stuart, I worked behind a Tommy gun as we call them here in the U.S. for a few years. When I got my own license I bought one too. I needed at least 10 men, not hung over or full of excuses’ of why they can’t work that day, so I eventually sold it about 15 years ago and have not regretted it. Pump work is for big companies, I am a small plastering company these days.

Hey Kirk, my name is Ernesto, I'm 21, I live in Colorado & I'm also a plasterer. I admire your work, but out here we mainly do synthetic finishes. So from one plasterer to another what brand of synthetic stucco do you prefer & why? Cause out here I've used el rey, omega, la habra, dryvit, comex, & sonowall.

Excellent question Ernesto Gomez, from an applicator who has used them all, I prefer Dry-vit, bmi and carson's as well as stucco-flex, I won't mention the acrylic's that suck as I try and stay positive about good or great products only.
Ernest, If they gave me certain acrylic  product's at no cost I still would not apply them as experience has shown me some drag, discolor, spider check and or simply crack and fail.
I tend not  to mention negative experiences or reviews of products.

Hi Kirk just wanted to know which brand of the Santa Barbara Smooth Mission Finish do you recommend, and would this finish be suitable to use with plastic beads on the external angles I am from the UK but have a project to do in the Caribbean so I am currently trying to source a suitable material that will leave a smooth blemish free finish. thanks mate.

Evening distinctive dude, Each major stucco supplier has it own brand of fine spreading color finish such as the oldest, and most recognized company "La Habra stucco", they call their product, Santa Barbara Smooth Mission Finish.
BMI calls their exterior finish coat which is also smooth, "Marble finish coat". and so on.
I have used both La HraBra, and BMI which are primarily sold here in the U.S. with great results.
I'm certain which ever product sells the best in the Caribbean will have it's own blend of fine sand.
By the way, wish I was there, my kind of weather.

Thanks for the heads up on the brands I had seen the La Habra on line but hadn't seen the BMI. Re being here yes mate the weather is absolutely gorgeous.

Hey David, don't rub the location and weather in brother, I already miss the area.
No, I don't bullnose any homes unless a client asks me to do so, the fella who hired me was an engineer and knew what he wanted  the final results to look like, so the bull nosing was his request.
It's much more difficult to color coat a home with rounded edges as you have no stop point.
Lastly you can use galvanized or plastic corners, galvanized are stronger and therefore these are what I choose.
Plastic corners are fairly new and sometime split when a staple or nail hit it just right.
       Best wishes in Barbados.

Hey phillip Jones, there is no reply button to answer your question, anyone know why this happens to 1 out of 20 questions?
But the cost depends on too many things to answer out of the blue, such as access, is the home a simple box or cut up, is it single story or two, the list goes on and on, sorry, but I'd just be guessing unless i see the home.

    Mr. Giordanos,

I've got a home in California that was built in 83, it's a tract home – in the top end of the 530. It's got several features that were popular at that time but are now dated and unasthetic. The most undesireable of these is the extremely rough skip trowel stucco exterior finish. I really don't like it. I want to update the exterior finish with a santa barbara SMF. To do this, must I remove the existing stucco, or can we plaster over it?  Outstanding videos! Thank you for sharing.

Morning Filmore slim, good question, I would advise you to purchase either La Habra SBSMF or BMI's Marble finish in 94 pound bags.
What you want is the fine sand that are in these bags, usually a 30/30 sand sort of like talcum powder but a bit heavier.
You can not purchase the sand this fine at a yard. If you think you can the heavier sand next to that bin will also be in the load too, it only takes a handful to ruin your day.

Evening y0manda, this take more time in than I can explain here.
You would first need a skim coat then a finish coat.
If your house is porous and not sealed you don't need a bonding agent but you do need a very clean surface, I would recomend pressure washing very well.
Nothing sticks to a dusty surface.

Hi Steve, in order to create bull nosed corners you would have to start with them using the corners that are bullnose to begin with.
In other words at this point you can't round off straight corners.
Depending on how thick your  existing finish coat is depends on the skim coat if necessary, all SBMF are two separate coats.

Kirk, so I cannot make round (bullnose) from straight corners, even if I added bullnose strips, if there is such a thing.
did you ever see/install SBMF on straight corners?
does this sound right : I power wash, then prep with a bonding agent, skim coat smooth the knock down, then 2 coats of SBMF
      Thanks again for your expertise.

Morning roya dude, if you are applying a color finish it should be about the consistency of what I am using.
Remember this is just for the finish coat.
If your doing a patch coat where you need more depth that 1/8 inch you have to use a base coat material, that material should be sort of like whipping cream.

If it were me I would pressure wash as most dust in not seen, but if it's there, your new color finish won't adhere for long.

Hi Maggie Swain, have not used this product before, however if Dry-Vit make it, a person should be able to rely on it's integrity,
Limestone products are usually made of lime and and a few additive and will provide a really smooth finish plus the colors are really vibrant.
FYI, I have applied the Dr-Vit acrylic color coat to my own home.

Hi Kirk, Maggie again, I know this is most likely a stretch, maybe not since you have been in the business for as many years as you have. My question, do you know anyone in the stucco business that is in or near my area, San Pedro California, 90731, I would like to get approximately three bids/estimates on getting the buildind repaired and re-color coated, if you do fantastic, if not, well, that's that. I will contact the local contractors board and go from there. Regards, Maggie Swain

Hi Kirk, Have you ever done a smooth finish stucco on a new home with just base no color and ready for paint by others? I'm experiencing an issue with efflorescence weeping from cracks in the stucco, coming down over a freshly painted project and it looks bad . Sherwin Williams say they dont want to use elastomeric because if any water gets behind the paint, it will peel off in sheets. I like the white base as an application because we dont need to worry about the color or joints in the color and painting hides all that stuff.

      +Ken Aberson, yes and yes,
I have done or applied two coats and have slicked this base with a hard steel trowel finish and have also applied just a base coat without any colors.
What I would think you are experiencing is the base coat had not set long enough or been properly hydrated to allow the natural and normal cracking to occur.
plus all stucco base coat have to set in order for the pH levels to neutralize.
What you see may witnessing can be simply be a mistaken identity of efflorescence Versus bleeding or what we call the ghosting effect as paint was applied too soon.
Generally when stucco is applied it has a high pH around 14, you allow this to set at least 30 days for the pH to drop, so when painted it won't ghost.

    Hey Kirk,
Quick question… I haven't found the answer in any of your videos – sorry if you have already answered this before, but do I need to waterproof a cinder block wall before plastering it? For the portions of the cinder block wall that has been waterproofed (for basement application), but has membrane showing above grade, would you lath that section or would a bonding agent work? Thank you!

      December 2, 2016 at 6:31 pm

Morning MTP, good question, if you weatherproof or seal the cinderblock, now a bonding agent should also be used as there will be no more of a "porous suction" for the stucco to adhere to properly,
I as a rule pressure wash well cinder blocks then apply a stucco base coat to the cinderblocks, the new stucco's adhere by suction as both are porous, takes practice and knowledge or common sense.

FYI, you also need to know the correct amount of water to spray on a wall, such as if it's cold just enough to mist the surface but not that it's dripping wet or the suction, thus, adhering will be compromised.
Or if it's hot, cool these blocks down perhaps many time with a saturation of water from a garden hose, but aging allow the water to absorb into the cinderblock to cool but not be dripping wet or the stucco adhering again will be compromised

Kirk, Can you apply a new coat of stucco over a santa barbara finish easily (assuming no dirt on the old)? Or will it not hold well without bonding agents because of the smoothness of the finish?

Morning mate, no, not at all, the smoothness helps in order to get the new smooth finish you desire.
In fact when we place a base coat on a wall knowing I am going to apply A SBSMF on top, I hard rubber float the walls as I wish them as smooth as possible, thus, the idea of a Santa Barbara Smooth Mission finish is easier to achieve.
FYI, it matters little how smooth the existing is as long as it's cementitious and "Not Painted" the new coat will adhere by suction, naturally you will mist or saturate the walls with the proper amount of water before you begin the new coat.

Howdy Moale, close, it a finish coat material that has either fine, medium or heavy sand, once these 94 pound bags are mixed then you add the color, usually one color pac per cement finish bag.
FYI, Home Depot sells La HaBra colored finish bags with a limited amount of colors, just the earth tones.

Good evening Miguel, this depends on the weather if it's summer and you hydrate the walls at least 3 to 5 times within a two week period you should be fine, during winter add an extra week or even two the idea is to allow the walls to cure properly for a professional bond.

Hello Kirk. I've watched so many of your videos all the way from Australia, I've never seen you float with a polyurethane float, the yellow one, or any other for that matter other than your by the container load $5 sponge float which by the way costs $20 here in Australia to buy just one. Anyway my question is when I try to float with the yellow float like the instructions say on the premixed bag it either pulls the render off the wall or if I leave it longer to set more It makes a mess of the finish. I'm trying to get a fine smooth finish with only very little aggregate on the finished surface. Your help would be much appreciated.

Good Morning Slap Dude, those yellow floats are usually for compressing the base coat sort of like the hard rubber floats we use here, they will not bring the sand to the surface evenly, Buy the green sponge ones on Amazon, much cheaper.

Will a pool trowel finish work? Or will it not hurt to green sponge float it. That will just give me the rougher texture right.

And this is just one of the many reasons you're the professional – it's a lot easier when you can float and feather out your problems, but amateurs would have a hard (impossible?) time getting a Santa Barbara to look 1/10th thus good, seems like a totally unforgiving finish to do

Evening Enrique, we applied what is known as a smooth finish. LaHabra makes this finely sanded stucco called, "Santa Barbera Smooth Mission Finish."
BMI, make the same finish called "Marble."
All stucco companies have their own brand for applying smooth finishes, use 30/30 sand, as it's the finest grain sand, available.

@Kirk Giordano plastering Inc. Is there a premixed smooth finish with 30/30 already setup to just add water?

Kirk Giordano plastering Inc. hey Kirk another question, wasn’t sure where to ask, now I have acouple years of plastering experience nothing crazy, but what would be the result if you used DAP plaster of Paris on an lathe as if it were a “joint compound”. Let me know if you can! Thanks just curious

Today I smooth textured a new mailbox column I built. Using styrofoam trim with an arch on the sides for decorative appearance it came out pretty good… I’m humbled by this experience…. but any success I have I can thank you Kirk. And having clean tools buckets etc is super key. I am not a plastering guy by any stretch and will continue to refer work to the experts beyond a mailbox column. What I can do well is have finish that is wavy.
