Apply Santa barbara plaster finish, SBSMF

Howdy guys and gals, in this video my boys and I explain how to apply a Santa Barbara Smooth Mission Finish to stucco walls. This material is the finest grit sand you can purchase for an exterior finish. It’s almost as smooth as taping mud, but not quite as it does have fine sand. Therefor you must have clean tools such as a mixer which should be pounded out the day before, wheel barrels, buckets, shovels and hawks and trowel very clean. One tiny piece of sand will cause a whole lot of extra time to remove and continue. This video is for my pal, Gil Valaquez, Gil asked me to show and explain the way I spread out Santa Barbara Smooth Mission Finish.

Howdy gil, I do remember you asking me to demonstrate the Santa Barbara smooth mission finish texture. On this job I was set to apply a three coat stucco system (Light medium or heavy float finish) at the last minute we changed ideas and decided to go with the forth coat. The forth coat gave me the opportunity to explain and show how we do it as many fellas have different techniques.
What next, do you wish to see how it’s done?
Thanks Gil, and have a groovy evening.

I have been waiting for this video as well. Are you guys using standard Lahabra stucco or mixing it yourself? I was told 1-1-4 portland-sand-lime was good for Santa Barbara, but I am worried about cracking/spidering.

Always great videos guys. If you are taking requests, I would like to see any architectural pop outs that you guys do yourselves.

Hi Kirk, I have an indoor pool room that used to be exterior and has rough stucco.  What should I use as a base coat prior to plaster?  Is it possible to use drywall mud? Or do I need a smoother stucco prior to plaster??  Thanks, Jen

Hello Jenifer Castaneda, if it were me I would use a veneer basecoat then follow up with a veneer finish coat.
Also apply a bonding agent first.

@Daniel Mcgee Hi, I do have a video of how to use a hand hopper, but can't find the title. I show how to shoot, but not how to mix, sorry. If it's too thin, use less air and you can't have any clumps in the mix.

Hi, Kirk. Love your videos. I have a 50 year old home with original unpainted rough stucco. Was wondering if you have any videos of you applying a vertical "rake" or trowel finish. Not sure what the correct term would be. I've seen this style on some older homes in the neighborhood and would like to replicate it. Thanks, and keep up the great work and the great attitude.

Evening Norwindian, sounds like they did both finishes but just left the scratch marks in the second coat, I have done this about 5 times, it's looks really cool,
I would have to see a picture to say how it's done.
Or type in my channel how to apply a scratch coat and see if the first coat matches what you have, you can apply the next coat and do the exact same thing.
With stucco or plaster there are no rules a person's only limited to ones imagination,

Just to clarify, the finish has pronounced vertical lines. You might have seen it on mid century modern homes in your travels. Thanks a million.

i always try to imagine how they did the different textures in the day…..in spain where mission style comes from….they made mud/conglomerate walls and made a quiklime mix and brushed it on…..being corrosive to skin…..i figure they didnt waste time just slapped it on and away…..hence the rough look…..then ironed flat……or white washed each year.

Howdy Ethan, I can but it much more difficult to smooth a sandy mixture down, type in plaser material yards such as westside Building Material, and purchase the correct cement plaster as the fine sand it sort of like talcum powder or what is know as silica sand.

Hey Kirk, love your work. Question: on every video I've watched you apply santa barbara, I've seen on the first coat you always steel float it. I always use a brown float after I plaster the first coat. Just like when I sand finish 20/30. Am I doing it wrong? Because it seems easier the way your doing it.

Good Morning Dude, this is easy, go ahead and sheetrock, next apply a bonding agent over the sheetrock or use blue or purple sheetrock, as no bonding agent would be necessary. , Next, apply a basecoat of veneer plaster then finish with a diamond or imperial finish plaster, you will have to add color to the finishes veneer plaster.
This is no easy task, thus I dont do it unless folks are aware I can't guarantee a perfect color.

I can definitely hear the dofference in the trowel. 1st coat you're enforcing your will and making it stick.. After it sucks on the next coat is ready to grab. You need that touch though other wise its shim the wall and screed between, then fill it in. You can tell whose got the hands. Love how when you're done it's all cleaned up. Thats a big peev of mine. I always work like you, treat the property like yours.
I've gone to plumb $100k kitchens and go under the cabinets full of sawdust…loose my mind but long ago i didn't take pictures. Can you imagine taking a check for even $1g and leaving a mess, no me either.. And no customers word I don't need to clean it, you'll take care of it…That bit me 1 time & only 1 time. Keep up the great work. May your mud be creamy smooth and lighter than expected.
