How about using an aluminum paint spray shield to cover the eaves when dashing? Being a painter myself, it seems like it would work a little better than the screed tool you showed in video, as a spray shield is wider and would cover more of the eaves; plus they come with a extension handle that would be easier on you guys, as you would not have to extend your arms as much. Just a tip I thought about that I thought you guys would like…-Mark from San Diego, CA

Hey mg21ify, excellent tip. Mine painters shield was lent out so I had to improvise with that screed.
I ended up using a piece of cardboard about 4 feet long with no handle. It was a drag but we got the job complete.
Thanks again for the excellent tip.
    Have a great day!

Kirk, there is so much nice, old stucco work on homes in my area, yet finding anyone with the knowledge or skills to repair or recreate it is impossible – the skills have disappeared and all the guys have switched to acrylic.
Your videos are an incredible resource for anyone looking to tackle this art form. Nothing beats watching a seasoned pro at work. Nice camera work Jason!
    Many thanks.

Hi Richard, thanks very much for the compliment. Jason and I try to educate anyone interested in how to repair traditional stucco. Jason says, (if we have to do it anyway dad, why not show people how to?)
I think even up in Canada, folks could always log onto the BBB and type in their city to find qualified plastering contractors in their areas. Their site is easy to find on Google.

Best wishes, and have a great evening.

Love your videos Kirk, they've really helped me stucco my house! One question: I went for a floated sand finish but my top coat has too many holidays….could I throw a dash finish over it to hide my defects before painting? Thanks

Morning Mike, sure you can, but if it were me I just fill in the holidays as it's much faster and you keep the finish you applied.

Hi Kirk thanks for your response! I might dash it because also some areas didn't float very well as it dried too quick for me to get to it. It's a 5200 sq ft house and I've done the stucco alone so there are also joint areas where I couldn't complete a whole wall in the day….dash could help cover those blend joints too, I'm hoping. Thanks again, really appreciate your videos!

What’s your mix ratio for that particular dash finish?

Good Evening Max Dude mix regular cement plaster than add water until it looks soupy,
FYI, wet the entire dash brush before dipping it in the soupy mud or it will stick to the brush and not come off the brush well, thus not dash evenly.

Howdy Chris, no, your dash brush must be kept wet and somewhat clean.
I keep a water bucket with me as sometimes after 1 to 10 throws the dash brush get filled and clogged with too much stucco. Thus it won't come off the brush uninformed.
Peace love and happiness to all.

I am doing this over our finish coat. Client loves the texture it is now, but wanted some more depth. I suggested some rock aggregate and white sand to add a bit of colour to tie in the columns with the original building, applied via dash/stippling so it will show. Any suggestions on the viscosity of my dash mixture. (I've used masonry cement, sand and water, for all my coats, it is a grey finish)Trying to bring stucco to Michigan!!!

Greetings Rikki, the white sand will turn to grey if mixed in portland cement stucco as it's gray. You can buy and use Hansons Lehigh white cement stucco, "only at plastering material yards," if you add tan san to it you will get a tan color if you add white sand to Hansons Lehigh white cement plaster you will get a white stucco finish. Kirk, would this be a good method say on a dog house that we want to be able to move. It wouldn't add that much weight and would 'look' like a stucco finish for the most part?
