You guys are great! I'm just doing some minor crack and small hole repair but when I'm ready for the big job to get done I'm definitely going to call you!

We look to you for guidance every spring! We are about to do a repair on our heavy-dash stucco chimney. Originally, in 1925 they applied the stucco directly to the brick. I am not sure how to tie this in. The entire house is built out of a brick that has similar characteristics of a cinder block but out of clay and with grooves on both sides. Unfortunately this brick wasn't used on our chimney and it is common brick. Thank you for your videos. There are not very many plasterers in Detroit!

    Hi Richard,
If you go to our home page and type in how to stucco over brick, a video will appear that explains this procedure.
    Best wishes with your project.

Thanks Kirk! I have learned amazing things since this question was asked. I am concerned about spalling on the upper 28 courses. I might need to hire someone to replace the brick before it is plastered or install lath. What is your opinion? I emailed you some photographs through your website contact form.

Thanks, and have a wonderful day!

Hey, Kirk,How do you mix the dash finish stucco? I guess you put cement, sand and water in a bucket and you make it really soupy. That's my favorite finish by far. I do have a few brushes, but I also have a hand hopper. Looks like a big fishing reel, professionals probably don't use them. I found it in my dad's garage. Can I use it? Also, do you put heavier sand in the heavy dash finish? Thanks, Kirk.

Hi Gandalf4137, mixing takes a bit of practice, I put the lime in the coconut and drink em both together, Seriously, if I see large sand in the finish I am trying to duplicate, then yes, I use heavy sand not the typical plaster sand like say Oly, or Felton sand, the consistency also maters a bit, on some jobs I add more or less water depending on the existing dash finish, takes a bit of practice to look at a finish and realize how they got it that way, easy for me as I have had my share of throwing on these finishes, Cheers, Kirk giordano

+Kirk & Jason Giordano's plastering & stucco tips Thank you, Kirk. Less water would make the finish heavier, wouldn't it?

Hello, sort of, less water makes it dryer, keep in mind I also wet the brush to start off with and if the mix is too dry I have a water bucket handy, fro which I dip the entire brush into and turn the brush into, thus removing all dry stucco, next I will dip the dash brush back into the dryer mix, mixing by hand and brush more water, this action also stops the mud from sicking to the brush, sometimes necessary. FYI, there were days in the past that I just dashed houses for 8 hours a day, which at the end of the day your arm feels heavy but strong, this is the beginning of dashing knowledge. Cheers, kirk giordano Plastering
