How to use J Trim as a stucco stop

October 31, 2011 By Stucco Plastering 11 Comments

How to use J Trim as a stucco stop. Sometime we all have to improvise.

Hello guys and gals. In this video I’ll show you one of the uses of J trim as a stucco stop near the rafters on this home. Typically this isn’t necessary as the wood pieces with the vent hole are actually protruding from this area by 7/8″ giving us this stop.

Hey Kirk, have you ever used a J trim with weep holes as a weep screed? I have a situation at the front of my house where the stucco goes all the way down and meets the driveway concrete, no flashing. The sill plate and stem wall is below the level of the driveway (genius engineering) so I want to put a flashing where the stucco meets the driveway to divert the water. I don't want something bulky like a Z flashing since it's the front of my house. Was thinking something like a J trim with weep holes would work and be concealed. Have you ever used anything like that?

@Gil Esquivel Morning Gil, I generally use what we call number 36 weep or drip screed same piece different name. but you can use a weep or drip screed with a V at the bottom, they sell this weep or drip screed at home depot and Lowe's.I would recommend prior to weep screed installation place some tin flashing from a roll or thicker flashing on the bottom you can adhere this roll type flashing to the wood bottom with sikaflex, adhesive polyurethane sealant caulking then nail to keep it in place, then install the drip screed over it. Below is a video I did long ago which gives an idea of what I'm referring to, I didn't install the flashing first as it was a covered porch and was to be painted anyhow. The below metal is an option that I sometimes do if the wall will get a lot of rain.Lastly, if you're not sure what the heck I am talking about Google weep and drip screed images. https://youtu.be/TTcTFhH-Gq8 Best wishes, and have a groovy day! kirk Giordano

Good Evening Plant Based MD, yes sir, around windows and doors these are often installed to commercial projects, on residential homes, not so much in my area,
however, in some areas around the country they are called for as a windwo stop and added expansion.

Thank you kirk, I am doing stucco on the old detached garage, when I took the old window trim and water proofed it a layer of tyvek and two ply paper lath just like you recommend, I thought about using the J trim to have a clean edge around the existing windows.. Thanks for your videos I use them for my home projects..
