Repair Lath & plaster after stepping through the ceiling

Howdy guys and gals, in this video I explains how to repair Lath & plaster, after stepping through the fragile ceiling. The home owner Scout did a great job with all the prep work which is why I was able to spend less than an hour correcting the patch. I have repaired many ceiling where folk have stepped right through the wood lath thinking it’s just as strong as the rafters. It is tough to stay on the studs while up there, I stepped through myself once.

Kirk, Is there any trick to replacing the Lath? I put my foot through the attic into my second floor while replacing all my knob and tube wiring. I destroyed the lath as I fell in all the way up to my hip. I was planning on cutting out a nice square, putting new lath in to match the original as much as possible and then try to plaster…Based on my first quote so far and what others are telling me, I feel I must be missing something.

@DonnOMalley Hey Donn, That's the number one reason for holes in the ceilings. I have stepped through once, myself. I have patched about 50 for this reason alone. Simply find your studs cut out buckle screw metal lath up there and mud as usual. If you are on the studs you can use nails however if you are in the field (between the studs) the nails will bounce and make a bigger mess as the lath is flexible in these areas.

@StuccoPlastering Thank you very much for that quick response. I am going to try my hand at this fix and see how it goes.

Also, great videos. You were one of the few posters with videos that actually taught something.

    Thank you again

@DonnOMalley Hey Don, at least with (trying) you will learn. You will probably find you are more capable then you expected.
    Best wishes with this hole.

Hi Mike, interior plastering was all they did prior to the invention of sheetrock.
I often advise folks to sheetrock as it last longer and is easier to install.
However, I repair a lot of original plaster walls too. I could use either structo-lite base coat with Diamond on top, but it's easier to use a 20 minute wall compound, plus you can sand drywall compounds if you want.

this is wrong..one thing i first noticed your using a concrete finishing trowel not a plaster trowel. I watched you use durabond over wood lathe in your other video which is also wrong..do people a favor stop making videos of what not to do..people always look in the BBB for a reputable plastering contractor that uses right materials and right tools! sorry bud..i take pride in my trade!!

Evening Jacob Campbell, it's not the trowel it's the coordination with the knowledge, hate to sound like a jerk but I could have applied this mud to the ceiling with my shoe or a frying pan and achieved the same results.
By the way I am a member of the BBB, this actual means little as anyone can join as long as you have a clean past and all your licenses and insurances are up to date, plus pay the $600 per year membership.
Thanks for watching and have a good evening.

Can I use Premixed Lightweight Drywall Joint Compound instead of 20 min quick set joint compound (the kind you have to mix) to repair wood lathe ceiling?
