Two ply paper lath over Tyvek house wrap, lathing information

Two ply paper lath over Tyvek house wrap, lathing information

Hello everyone, we used two ply paper to lath over Tyvek house wrap, this means 2 layer spot glued so they stay together for my weather resistive barrier. Its function is to prevent water from contacting the plywood sheathing and studs. Wet wood will rot while metal will rust. Therefore both must be kept dry. No one wants to deal with mold or mildew
The idea with 2 layer is that 2 layers offers a built in drainage plane for the wall system. So water can escape.
Another reason is if the outer layer fails you still have the inner layer. Plus 2 layers is just as easy to apply because it’s spot glued and won’t separate as you staple it up.

Defective stucco moisture barrier can cause water intrusion in walls, which leads to mold.

Do you use those nails with the cardboard spacers to space the wire out from the paper?

Hey buddy, those nail are called furring nails. No, we don't need to as the wire is self furred these days.
    Good question.

Hey outdoorsman, Why not just use tarps? They are probably cheaper and defiantly come in a wide variety of sizes. I believe Tyvex wrap comes in 2 to 5 foot rolls of about 150 feet in length. It’s great for house because you overlap and staple down, but I believe if you wanted to cover, say a car, truck, or porch the wind would blow the layers apart.
Best wishes with whatever you decide. Have a groovy evening

how do you repair the tar paper behind the stocco, that has been ripped in some areas, while sanding the wood beams, during mold remediation indoors?

Hey jasmine, you could apply a polyurethane caulking directly over it, Sealing the broken paper membrane with the sealant caulking
(I recommend Sikaflex for this repair.) This is a simple fix that if done properly, will work.
Or you can break out the stucco to be able to insert new paper under the existing. Best wishes.

Howdy Jodysephus, I prefer to tack the moister barrier to the wall with our hammer staplers.
If I need a good sealer I generally use Sikaflex caulking. It has way too many benefits to list here.

too funny…every time I search for stucco, plastering etc. I see Kirk. I was trying to see if it is worth it to tyvek wrap before stucco on my addition. Just afraid they will hit some close vent pipes and other stuff behind shear walls. Nail pattern wont be visible. what do you think? Love your videos, wish you lived in so. Cal.

Kirk and Jason. You guys are great! The videos are great. I have a question about the staples used to hold the lath on the building. You said every six inches on the studs.

My question is what length of staples do I need to use? I have a wide crown stapler that will do up to 5/8 inch staples . Is 5/8 inches long enough for staples for lath? Should I pick up a stapler that can staple longer staples?

Thanks for all the great videos!

@Kevin Cross Hi Kevin, thank you, the leg of the staple has to go into the stud at least 7/8 of an inch so depending on the plywood thickness, adjust to the length you need.
I usually buy the inch and a quarter myself.

I'll keep that in mind. I have one last question. My house has wood shiplap siding (it only has 1/4" bevels at the top and bottom of each board). It's in good shape, it just isn't the look I want (that's why I'd like to do stucco). Can I paper (two layers) over my siding then lath and stucco or do I need to remove the wood siding from my house. I am under the assumption that the siding would function similarly to OSB sheathing on a new home.

Hi Kevin, lathing, single, double or triple shiplap siding takes some time in as these uneven boards tend to mess with the true and plumpness that traditional plywood allows.
I can do almost as fast as a plywood substrate, so I'm sure you can handle it.
To remove the current shiplap siding and and replace with plywood is not worth the benefits gained to me.
Of course check with the building department as different parts of the states have different rules.

When I use black paper to double layer the house, do I have to tape all the vertical cut offs as I would with Tyvek? Or I can just staple it because it's 2 ply'd?
    Thanks

Howdy Vitt, yes when you remove stucco the old or existing paper can no longer be used, you have to apply new paper, and yes you can go over the existing.

Thanks Kirk, Just another quick question . Basically my house was stucco'ed in the 70's, and has cake swirl pattern. lol! for the most part its good condition. but I have a wall surrounding a pool that is stucco as well but the wall is deteriorating and need to be repaired. Its painted and flaking. I can remove the majority of the loose stuff and scrape the paint as much as i cything in between an,powerwash, etc. but I dont want the cake swirl anymore and would prefer it flat. My question is , Im sure Ill have to grind or chip off a few high areas of swirl but can I go over it with new stucco?am I going in the right direction with this or am I missing anything. BTW i live in Toronto hot summers ,cold winters and everthing in between. Thanks or the vids many of them relate to my situation.

Howdy Vitt Dude, if it were me I'd clean the damage well, prep the wall with pressure washing really well apply a bonding agent then just re-coat the wall to your liking.
An no, you can't paper and wire over existing stucco.

Kirk Giordano plastering Inc. Hi Kirk.. I should've put a question mark after my comment. I'm a mason and an inspector made me take the Tyvek off a home. It called for 30# felt and he said you couldn't put felt over the Tyvek.

I'm definitely not a plaster guy…done tons of masonry work and carpentry… just wanted to say that I love your videos especially when I've always hated having to do stucco. You definitely make it look a lot easier than it is. I look forward to seeing more as I love learning wether or not I'm going to do this kind of work.
