Step by Step Interior Plastering a Room,
This video was 5 years ago when we first started to video our work, today we have learned to explain and show in much easier to understand details.
Hello, guys, this video explains the step by step process of applying two coats of 20 minute mud to bedroom walls. I did this large room in a day with help. It can also be completed with taping mud in three days with a ton of sanding. Take it from me, choose a plasterer and don’t use the taping mud, unless you have lots of time and don’t mind the dust. other methods are structo-lite one day then a finish coat of plaster on another.
Still another method is imperial plaster base coat then an application of diamond finish plaster, this material is usually applied in all rooms.

looks great. thanks for he tips. going to take a stab at patching some plaster for the first time. I've been browsing your video's and trying to take it all in.
@madatown Your welcome pal, and best wishes with your projects. Even if you don't get it perfect at least you would have given it your best shot. That's worth more then perfection.

Is this a level 5 finish after the two coats of the 20 minute mud? Do you ever use the premixed light weight compound over the second coat? What type of primer do you use over the 2 coats? Thanks for your videos, there are very informative.
@kilfrg Hey guy, I'm not sure what level 5 is. Sorry. However what we did is a smooth finish. I always mix our plaster as well as stucco, it take more time but the results are much better product usually, than pre-mixed. Lastly, i usually just recommend a Kelly Moore or other quality primer for plaster.
Best wishes.

Hey guy, that sounds about as close to explaining the levels as I have heard.
I use the swimming pool trowel sometimes where I don’t want the trowel lines, and lastly I use a wing trowel for the corners. Place allot of mud in these areas, and simply pull the wing tool up or down and you have a great corner with ease.
Thanks for the comment, and have a good evening

Hi there, great video. I'm restoring some plaster. Yesterday I applied structolite to the lath and was sure to push it in well to 'key' it. A taper told me I didn't have to use the plasterweld. I have asked about 15 people about plastering, most of whom are "old timers" who have experience and they all tell me something different! I guess that is to be expected. Making actual plaster vs. using durabond seems like a major production. Do you have a plaster recipe? I know it looks better.
Hey Notorious, there are so many joint compounds available that It’s tough to keep tract of them all. Some say they adhere very well, I simply don't take chances with product failure as I am responsible for the product (or mud) I apply.
Sense I’m an applicator and not an engineer, I always apply a bonding agent it's simple and inexpensive, plus this way I’m sure whatever mud I apply stays applied.
Best wishes.

Hi asineo, Yes, for new construction.
Sheetrock, Gypsum board, drywall, Sheetrock, whatever name you want to call it means basically the same thing.
Green board is water resistant, notice I didn’t say water proof.
Blue board is made to absorb the moister from plaster, and create a strong bond between the plaster and the gypsum. Most of the jobs I do I simply go over sheetrock with first applying a bonding agent on it.
Thanks for watching and have a great evening.

This dry wall not plastering.
My preference is plain old Sheetrock or Drywall also known as plasterboard, wallboard, gypsum board, or gyprock these panels are made of gypsum plaster pressed between two thick sheets of paper. Blue board is more for veneer plaster as it absorbs well without a person having to apply abounding agent to. Lastly the Green board is a bit water resistant primarily used for kitchen and or bathrooms.

Evening Frank Thomas, yes, I am using a 20 minute drywall compound mud. Not a veneer such as Structo-lite or Diamond. I usually only use these veneers in bathrooms or kitchens,.
Have a good evening.

USG diamond veneer. 2 coats job done. Whats all this level 5 crap?
Hi Jimjim Skimmer, I agree, diamond base coats and finish coats are the way to go, lots of folks out here still have the 3 coat tapping mud systems applied as they don't realize the benefits of the veneer diamond finishes.
Plus most folks don't understand how easy it is to apply.
cheers!

Great job again. It always amazes me though how there doesnt seem to be an industry standard over there for plastering. I mean in this video you used a 20 min mud i believe on top of drywall then bonded then skimmed. Why didnt the hangers just use Blueboard then usg diamond? When it comes to wall technology the industry over there is soooo confusing. I find it weird as we over here use nothing but Marshalltown trowels which come from the US, even though were starting to use plastic trowels now and spatulas. Over here we use one type of plaster when skimming British Gypsum multifinish, and thats for plasterboard and reskimming old walls prior to putting a bonder on first. Over there theres red top unical brown top etc etc. I really believe USG is really missing a great opportunity in not pushing for blueboard and diamond veneer finishes, less messy better quality and it preserves an ancient craft which i found out when i was over there in certain parts is none existant. But again when you go down to Massachusettes, New England, Rhode Island, Cambridge and the North East they do a whole lot of it down there. Id love to work over there again, worked in Nebraska Potterton and Brunswick New Jersey, but that was just for a friend. Ive seen guys on here from the US that are skimming on 6-7ft stilts so i know you guys are that good, im just confused as to where the most prolific place in the US is for plastering?
Any thoughts on my comment about USG missing an opportunity?
Ps GREAT job again. Your a credit to the trade. Keep it alive.
Morning Jim, thank you. I agree veneers are the best for kitchen and bathrooms, I have used Structo-lite with a finish coat many, many times also, I enjoy showing many different products, so folks get a broad understanding of what materials can be used and how.
Marshalltown trowels, have about 10 on my truck as my sons like these too.
I buy what's available at my plaster yards, they don't carry red top veeneer, but do carry Diamond and Imperial.
Lastly the sheetrock was hung when I went to bid the job, I don't hang board anymore, no glory in it.
Cheers and have a Happy New Years, Kirk Giordano’s DIY plastering tips
Thanx man. Credit to the trade.
Another great tutorial from the master. Keep it up Kirk!
How come you use bonding agaent for taping Kirk, we use it for stucco but never drywall and never seen professional tapers use it……never had a problem….
Props for using a trowel, I've only seen dudes using taping knives…..east coast still uses trowels
from California, I am a texture guy, I use to joke about the finishers "dont stop sanding till you see the whites of the gypsum" . I like this. Is a brown coat only for lath n plaster?
I have been plastering swimming pools in southern California for 43 years and when I plaster interior I use my pool trowels don't judge the way I do it judge the finished product.we make look easy it's not
